lenses IQ: M 200mm f4 or A 200mm f4

yes i've seen the info at the lens database, the A* looks beautiful, but people sometimes go crazy at lenses auctions and pay a lot of money for old and used glass. i know famous vintage lenses can raise high numbers, but with the K5's better High ISO response if i'm to spend 1200usd i prefer to pay for a brand new lens.

i'm also concerned about weight, because i wan't to take it with me for landscape photography on long trips to mountain climbing, so even if the lens stays at base camp i have to carry about 2.5kg of pentax gear. that's leaving a whole meal to take the camera with me. I did use a point and shoot, but IQ is so bad i rather skip a dinner and take the slr with me.

i've seen at different webpages both are the same weight so what i'm trying to find out is if there's any difference in IQ because there's slight difference in glass construction. I don't really need f2.8, f4 is great because is a lot lighter. As an example a lot of people goes crazy about 50mm A 1.4 and according to resolution tests 50mm A f1.7 has better resolution, i have 50mm M 1.7 and has superb IQ if you find the sweet spot (i like this lens resolution and detail even more than my 40mm 2.8 lmt, the first was 65usd the other like eight times more expensive). So if i can find another great lens with a great price will be excellent! For my purpose with this lens i will normally stop down to f16-f22 and i have plenty of time to plan composition, manual focus and exposure.

Thanks to all for your advice

tech specs about both lenses according to Bojidar Dimitrov's webpage Pentax Telephoto Prime Lenses

both lenses are almost the same, there is a difference in construction (M: 6 elements, 5 groups; A: 6 elements, 6 groups)

Wich one do you think has better Image Quality? what do you think about the resolution, color rendition, CAs, etc. (if you have tried both or one of them, or what you have heard is said about them)

ps. Not based on the A aperture funtion that gives you metering, just IQ

Thanks to everybody!!

thanks, every comment is very important, for me the weight issue vs image quality is very important, what i'm doing is landscape photography when i go climbing. and a lot of my friends already consider me to be nuts because i carry a SLR camera with me while climbing. last october i went to the himalayas and with a group of friends climbed Mt. Pumori to 7200mts. the route is more technical than climbing to Everest. On that occassion i carried the 40mm 2.8 lmtd and it was great, but my first cosideration for that trip was weight, now i think the weight was not that much of a problem (i was carrying the k7 body anyways). This summer i'm going to Peru to climb at cordillera blanca so i think the 15mm f4 lmtd wide angle will be the best option. but since i live i ecuador its very difficult for me to find somebody that owns a 15mm f4 to try it on the field. Is great that i can use the various opinions of the forum members to take a wise decision.
now it's clear, if i take the 12-24 i would probably have to leave one or two dinners at base camp, and i prefer to carry the K5 body with me instead of a point and shoot.
thanks to twitch for the pics, and thank you all for your great advice!!
EDU
ps. i have to say that i'm so glad i decided to go with a pentax system when i started at photography, the limiteds are unique!

this thread was useful i do a lot of traveling and mountain climbing, and size and weight is a real issue for me since i carry a K7 body. i've been thinking about getting the 15mm f4 for a long time, and that's what i'll do.

IQ is very important, but 12-24mm is too heavy for me, so 15mm F4 is what i would get

I do a lot of travel and mountain climbing
DA 15mm F4 lmtd (for open spaces)
SMC A 50mm 1.4 (i use this for portraits of local people, excellent IQ)
DA 70mm lmtd (there's no lightweight telephoto, but this goes 105mm on K7 so medium telephoto ok)

Pentax DA 15mm F4 ltd or DA 12-24mm F4 AL

hi i want to buy a new wideangle, and i would like to ask based on the experience of the forum members wich one will be best for me.

the main concern is image quality, above all.

i mainly do landscape fotography, so aperture and AF is not really a problem, i do everithing from my tripod and using long exposures and focusing to infinity.

the 15mm softness probably is ok since resolution is a lot better from F8.

but if somebody owns both lenses, the DA 12-24mm and the 15mm ltd (wich is probably a rare thing) please help me with some advice.

thanks a lot!
greetings from Ecuador, South America!
