Pentax K5 (stained) sale

Live View usage contributing to sensor spots was one theory back in the day. Its certainly possible, but the fact is that these cameras are now over 4 years old. The minute amounts of fluid between the glass layers in front of the sensor could easily have evaporated/outgassed from the edges by now. I know that it takes good pictures - nothing else matters...

I would rate the physical condition almost "like new". Shutter is currently at 4731 - most of that were taken by me. Not surprising really, the sensor stain issue affected the earliest batches of the then new K-5 cameras. Those affected cameras were quickly returned by buyers (and sat in storage since) so most of them barely saw much usage at all. Awesome camera if you don't mind the sensor stain issue (not visible in any of the shots I've taken). Do a forum search for the sensor stain issue to get a full idea of what it is and what it isn't. The only thing I've noticed that differentiates it from a regular K-5 is that the serial number on the bottom has been removed.

I picked up one of these K-5 cameras with the sensor stains. These stains (not dust) aren't visible in regular use (unless you shoot a lot of at F20). After about 3k shots I am impressed at how much of an improvement it is over my old K10D. Well worth the bargain prices...

Lens design for K-01

That new lens looks really interesting. Limited build style so far. Is it a 35mm (too close to 40XS) or 21mm?
Talk about a really small lens/camera combo. Loving the K-01 concept to date.

The K-01 is certainly a polarizing camera. But there is no doubt that it has the largest and most impressive native lens lineup of any mirrorless camera. Now should I be patient and wait for V2 with the EVF or just plunge in now. The ability to AF in video will come in handy with my 1 year old daughter. My current video cam is my Olympus EP-1 and it just can't keep up with the little rascal who just started walking. What do I do when she starts running...

Look at the pictures of the K-01 mount - it has the screw drive on it. Are you saying that Pentax placed a screw drive system on the camera that doesn't use it?

Anyway, let me run through a (very) simple exercise of using a Nikon F lens on a Nikon 1 camera. First you have the 2.7x crop factor (so your normal lens becomes a tele). With the exception of birding - most of the old lenses are pointless on camera. On top of that, AF does does work either. Waste of time in every possible dimension.
Enough said!!

Hmm, stupid and gimmicky - you mean like the Nikon 1 series...

The more I think about the K-01 and its successors the more I like it. Looking back, the transition from mirrored to mirrorless can be compared to the transition from manual focus to autofocus, or film to digital. Some camera makers didn't survive the transition, some camera makers dumped their old mount and started fresh (Canon, Olympus, Sony/Minolta/Konica, Nikon 1). Then there were camera makers who stayed true to their users and heritage. They adapted their mount and lenses for whatever innovation that came along so that their loyal users could focus on whats important - taking beautiful pictures of their lives and families (and landscapes etc). So far Pentax is the only photography company that is carrying their mount into the mirrorless age. Now, about that viewfinder...

Nice work. I don't understand the hate over this camera. Its way better looking and more functional than the Nikon 1 - what a nightmare that is.

New K-01 mirrorless camera coming

The presence of an EVF is critical for me. I am game if it is - this will be my upgrade from my K10D and *istD. Not even the K5 tempted me enough to upgrade.
I love the thinking behind this camera. Reformulate the wide angle lenses to be non-retrofocal and protrude into the mirrorbox. Maintain compatibility with K and m42 mount lenses as well. Classic Pentax to not abandon its users. Whats the point of having a wafer thin camera with full size lenses (ala NEX).

What is there not to like here. Hmm, none of the spy shots show whats on the back end of the hump - (there is a glimmer of hope).

What? You mean that Ashton Kutcher doesn't help Nikon sell a bunch of cameras? Or celebrity tennis players for Canon - they done that back in the Canon AE days up to Maria Sharapova for the powershots...

If the Nikon 1 manages to beats m4/3 (MILC industry dominance) it would be entirely due to marketing and brand recognition over substance.

Ricoh to buy Pentax camera business from Hoya

This is a very interesting development. Ricoh has a long history in cameras (unlike Hoya) and even made K mount SLRs in the film era. The Hoya purchase was a good thing for Pentax resulting the 645D, K5 and Q system released during that time. But cameras were never a core competency for Hoya. Ricoh on the other hand, buys into multiple awesome Pentax camera systems. I am very optimistic about this move (assuming that it comes to fruition).

Pentax Q in the Flesh

One thing is for sure - this new Pentax Q system has generated a lot of controversy. I am impressed by the construction of the camera, DRII, shutter mechanism and lenses. Every point and shoot digicam I've ever used has the lens wobble a bit when extending etc. When I was a starving student (some time back), I could only afford crummy P&S 35mm cameras - the difference in performance compared to a 35mm SLR was enormous even when using the exact same film and settings. With a real lens and a responsive body, a 1/2.3" sensor based camera might just fit the bill for an ultraportable camera. I am encouraged that this camera has a fast prime lens as its standard kit. It reminds me of the time when SLRs had a fast fifty as the standard kit instead of the boring and slow 18-55mm lenses. As far as the DOF argument goes, I find that I often need more DOF than available light allows (sometimes the opposite - portraits etc but that what our DSLRs are for). Handling is very important - my Pen E-P1 doesn't get used as much as it should because it behaves like a P&S (not very responsive). The Pentax Q react like a DSLR or rangefinder in terms of response.

I'll wait to see the street prices for the Q and the new Pentax APS mirrorless but I am quite certainly getting one of them. Now there is the agonizing (not really) wait for the release and comparisons of both systems...

RadamFG - couldn't agree with you more. The K5 looks like a winner from every angle - what more can anyone ask from a small SLR. Now I just have to decide between saving my pennies for the eventual 645D (used) or pick up a K5.

TiminyCricket - good luck on finding a new job soon. Being unemployed is really hard on people.

Back to cameras now, the K5 sounds really great and I want one - just that my wife is expecting our first baby so I really shouldn't... Just like I want that juicy new Fuji X100 - what a beauty. Back to Pentax for a moment - the K5 is a worthy upgrade from my K10D.

Rumors of the demise of the SLR are premature. An EVF pales in comparison to a real viewfinder, especially in low light - noise becomes horrendous in that case. EVFs still have a long way to go before they become competitive with with pentaprism viewfinders. The SLR has survived basically unchanged for decades because it works very well.

Hmm, my K10D takes razor sharp images - then again I often use manual focus lenses. Just got a hold of a Pentax M 50mm F4 Macro. Talk about detailed and sharp pixels out of that one. A simply amazing camera. As palmor stated - post some pictures and see if we can get to the bottom of you softness issue.
