SD Card "Lost" my photos...

I have never heard of Centron before. I have learned to stay away from cheap cards and only buy reputable brands (Sandisk has never failed me) from reputable dealers (not on the street). A friend of mine has just returned from Hong-Kong where he bought a fake Sandisk card. He lost all his photos. I also prefer 4x2Go cards than an 8Go one, to minimize the risks in case of a failure.

Thanks for this link.

I find the offer at the bottom of the page (K20D + Zoom Pentax SMC DA 16-50 ED AL SDM + Zoom SMC DA 50-135 SDM for €2001) particularly tempting !

If you buy the 2 lenses individually, they cost more than that. So you get a free K20D on top of that !

You could also consider the Tamron 28-75 mm f2.8. It's a great lens and it costs about 350 euros here in Europe - that's about AUD100 less than the Sigma. It's very sharp and very well built.

(The full name is Tamron SP AF Aspherical XR DI LD [IF] 28-75mm 1:2.8 Macro).

Does the DA 50-135 come with a manual?

I don't have any particular questions regarding the lens but I am concerned that if the instructions booklet if missing, it probably means that the box has been opened by a first customer and the lens returned to the seller without the book. Now, if you buy an 800€ lens, you think twice about it and if you return it, it probably means that there's something wrong with it.

I will test the lens tomorrow, but it would be reassuring to know that this particular lens normally ships without a booklet. All the Pentax items I bought so far came with instructions (which admittedly I hardly ever read).

May be I'm just paranoiac!

Hi, I have just received my DA* 50-135 f/2.8.

There is a card that says to "read the manual". But there is no booklet to read...

Did yours come with a manual?

I'm concerned that I may have been sent a returned item.

Thanks

Calibration: Huey or Spyder?

A friend of mine lent me his Spyder 2. I was convinced immediately and ordered the Spyder 3 on the same day (the Spyder 2 is no longer available). The price has come down considerably, it's easy to use and with practice, very quick.

If you have a dual monitor system under Windows, you should use the "Microsoft Dual Monitor Manager". It is a free download and enables you to use a different profile for each monitor.

I use Expression Media but I"m not happy with it as it doesn't respect the tree structure: I use the YYYY-MM-DD system to catalog my photos and Expression Media jumbles it.

I contacted Microcoft about it and this is the answer I got:

QUOTE:
I was able to reproduce this issue on my computer.

Expression Media imports the catalogs, and sorts the folders on the Catalog Folders by the Operative System (Windows XP in this case) Created Date.

This means that Microsoft Expression Media will sort the folders from the Oldest to the Newest.
END OF QUOTE.

That makes it pretty useless to me.

I still have iView MediaPro but the filenames have suddenly become shortened according to the DOS system like "2005871~1" which makes it useless too.

I'm told that it is the new version of Quicktime which is responsible for it. Unfortunately I'm unable to return to the previous version...

Other than that, I use CaptureOne 4 or sometimes Silkypix, then CS2. I also have Lightroom but never liked it.

PEF vs DNG

I posted this on DPReview lately:

From the horse's mouth (Pentax Japan): when shooting in DNG, the K10D stores about 10% less information than in PEF.

I have no information about what is lost though, it would be interesting to know...

RiceHigh, I dare you to at last post photos or provide a link to a gallery so that we can see what you can (or cannot do - why not ?) with both systems you have.

Unless I'm mistaken, you have never posted anything that shows that you actually enjoy photography.

Have you tried to plug your camera on the mains? This would clarify if the fault is with the camera or the batteries/charger.

Eclipse or E2?

Hi,

I have just received an answer from

[url=http://www.reidlimaging.com]

who distributes Eclipse in France.

He says that there was an error on his site.

Both the *istDs and the K10D can be cleaned with Eclipse or E2 indifferently.

I have posted this in DPreview too.

Jean.

Hi Will, good idea.

I use Silkypix 3 (because in my opinion it renders the best colours), then Photoshop.

I think that Silkypix would deserve a box of its own rather than being in the "other" category.

I will have another go at Capture One (Phase1) when they support the K10D (which is supposed to be in March) as I found the colour rendition excellent too. (You are entitled to a free download if you buy a Sandisk Extreme III at the moment, and to an update).

You can easily replace the battery yourself, just remove the 2 screws on the underside of the remote control.
