Settings for moon shots

Years ago in my film days I used to take photos of the moon and planets.
I used this Astro Exposure Calculator by Michael Oates. Back then there was no mobile phone apps, no auto exposure.
So this is a 3 disc setup that always lived in my camera case.
Surprisingly you still can find it here. Astro Exposure Calculator
I still use it today.

I backup every single photo to a HDD that is stored at work.
At the same time I also copy everything to a portable SSD that is with me at all times. This is more of a working copy & rejects get deleted.
Then the most important or “the cream” as I call them are copied to OneDrive for Business.
OneDrive makes it easy to transfer the files on and off my iPAD via FileBrowser for Business.

Thanks for your comments BruceBanner.
I agree with you about the lighting, but as we were “mountain” climbing I was travelling very light. It was the middle of a bright sunny day (second day of winter, 25dC and not a cloud in sight). All spare space was reserved for water. I did have 2 kids a wife and dog in tow, so lugging a heap of gear wasn’t a priority and I kept getting the old “can you hurry up we are not here to take photos” from the wife. The use of the 35mm was only because that’s all I took with me and I wasn’t planning on doing a Brenzier, I was just going to take snaps of the kids and scenery. But once at the top, I thought I would take some Brenzier shots just for the stitching practice.

As far as the stitching goes, I have done many panoramic stitches and used many app over my time, but I must say that the iOS version of Affinity Photo is nothing but outstanding. So much so, that I go to it first before I try anything else.

The 57 photos taken in RAW were not stitched as RAW as this would just kill the iPAD. What I did was process them in RawTheapee and reduced the output JPEGs to 15% original size, so each JPEG was only about 600kb. Then stitched them.

Next time I attempt this technique I will most defiantly use my 50mm f2.

This is my my 3rd attempt at this method and I’m pretty happy with the results.
I used a KP with a DA 35mm f2.4 AL. I got in nice and close, took 57 photos in RAW.
I processed one image in Raw Therapee and then copied the processing into all the others so that everything was identical.
Initially I tried stitching with Photoshop and was not happy with the results, so I loaded them into Affinity Photo on my iPad Pro, and not only did it stitch the photos faster than my computer, it produced a better stitch. (I think I’ll look at buying the desktop version and do away with Photoshop)
This is the result....Tell me what you think.

Captured this last week at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Tough shot to get, bad lighting, lots of reflections also lots of unrelated gear in the background.
But I’m very happy with the final result.

I am absolutely in love with my KP. I don’t listen to a word from the K3 owners who like to put it down. I think it is an awesome camera that takes fantastic photos.
The most fun I’ve had with photography recently is going out with only the KP and an old 50mm Pentax-M f2 lens. No “auto anything”. Full manual, the results are so satisfying.

The one thing I do love about the KP is the Depth of Field Bracketing. One press of the shutter and I get three shots at different apertures.
All we need now is to get Pentax to add this to a firmware update for the other models in the range.

If you are looking for a management app like Lightroom without paying the subscription price you should take a look at digiKam. It free, open source and does much of what Lightroom does.
Worth taking a look at while you are experimenting.

How did Pentax Alienate Retailers?

I had an interesting discussion with the local camera store here in Perth. They do stock a limited range of Pentax gear, but the salesman said they don’t like to sell it, mainly because of the backwards compatibility. He said people come in and buy the body but don’t need any lenses because they have a bag full of them at home.

It will be cold up there, colder than the forecast says it will be.
So keep a couple of spare batteries in your pocket to keep them warm and be prepaired to swap them out more than normal.
I have a small hand warmer that I drop in the bag with the batteries when its below zero.
