I got to use the 50mm for another dog shoot today. Here's a black lab mix named Baxter (and some non-dog photos first.):

Definitely. I keep about 10% of the bird shots I take on a good day. Typically with shows like Axel running, I would set to manual, set my focus point, set up a shot with him running toward the camera, burst shoot starting before he arrived at the focus point, and then do that five or six times to get one or two good shots. But, I don't want people to think that because I could use AF with this lens to get some good action shots that's a panacea for all the challenges in action photography.

That was one of a series of about 12 shots. More were in focus than with screw-drive lenses, but it wasn't quite batting 500.

For stills, this lens is amazing. Here are some from a recent shoot for a local dog rescue (Mile High German Shorthair Pointer Rescue)

I had a chance to photograph some colleagues at a work event last night. Light (for all but the last shot) was bounce flash off the ceiling. Post work was fairly minimal, some contrast reduction and dodging out shadows around a couple of peoples' eyes. Here are some of the shots with which I'm happy.

He wanted a rougher-looking, grittier photo. We also did a more lighthearted photo, but I like how this one turned out.

These were some of the best, but all around, a generally decent evening.

Actually, one thing that makes me think that it's a mechanical issue with the lens is that it's unpredictable. Sometimes the aperture pops open and then immediately shut (this is uncommon). Most of the time when it happens it opens and then doesn ot close until I change settings on the camera. This happens anywhere from 3 to 9 minutes into a video. One time, the lens held the aperture shut for 11 minutes.

So it's not reliably predictable.

Which is totally cool. I just would like them to say 'hey, we need to replicate this. Can you give us a couple months to see what's going on?' But being ignored makes it feel like they hope I'll just give up and live with equipment that doesn't work correctly.

Still waiting on a response from Ricoh following the latest firmware update. Nothing and it's been eight days since I follow up, and I haven't heard anything from then since April 25. Won't lie, this is starting to make me a bit unhappy.

That'll do it. IIRC,SHD likes more neutral-result developers like D-76+5. I haven't make my All About Film YouTube video on it, but I've shot around with it a bit and tried some different developers.

That's definitely the SHD look -- mega contrast and 400 ISO grain with 100 ISO speed. Good shots and good use of the film's aesthetic.

Update:

I upgraded the firmware. It's worse. The issue happens more frequently and it's not rectifying as readily as it had been. So this seems to be an issue (I'm waiting for Ricoh to get back to me to see if I'm right) with the lens' electronic aperture. It looks like I may have made a mistake being an early adopter.

I heard back from Ricoh. They asked what firmware I have (1.5) and then suggested that I upgrade to 1.51 (despite the 1.51 firmware apparently only having an affect on the new 11-18mm lens.) So I'll do that and we'll see what happens when I record hte next batch of videos in a week.

I sent Ricoh an e-mail with a description of the issue, a link to the video I shared in my original post, and all the details I have. If they respond, I'll let everyone know.

Thank you, yes. That's the word I needed. :D

Will do and good idea. I'm hoping it's a firmware issue. That was my first thought since it doesn't happen with the 31mm or the older 100mm macro with the aperture ring. The new 50mm is my only Pentax lens without an aperture ring.

That gives me an idea of something I need to test. I'll give this a go with a long exposure and see what happens.

Weird Videography Glitch, K-1 and the new 50mm f/1.4

I recorded some new videos for my YouTube channel this week and I've noticed a weird glitch with my K-1 and ONLY the new 50mm f/1.4 with the electronic shutter. Randomly, and usually after about 9 minutes of recording, the electronic shutter appears to pop open and won't close until I stop the video and adjust the aperture.

I have looked through the lens afterward to see what's happening, and the aperture is fully open. I typically shoot video for my channel at f/8, but certainly no wider than 6.3 or 5.6. I think the clip below was f/8 or f/11.

Also, the issue persists until I adjust the aperture on the camera, meaning that if I don't adjust the aperture the lens will remain wide open while, it seems, telling the camera it is at f/8 or f/11,

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Here is a quick clip, no audio, that shows it when it happens. My current thinking is that this is an electronic shutter glitch. The lens is great otherwise and this is inconsistent, so before I called Pentax I wanted to see if this was something anyone had heard of. As you may be able to see in the video, it is literally fine in one frame and then not fine in the next.

I just got a chance to scan and edit the black and white photos I took when I had the traveling K1000. I thought I had taken more than one roll with it in black and white, but, I guess not. This is Ilford HP5+, Rodinal 1+50 for 11:00.

At this point, with as many hurdles as we've had, I'm certain no one will begrudge you an extra week or two with it.

Hi, B&H,

Regarding the two Manfrotto tripod heads linked below, are they the same except that one includes a second QR plate? That's what it seems from the listings, but I wanted to check.

Reach out to Mike at Phototronic in Topeka and let him know that David Hancock recommended him. He fixed a camera (a very complex Taron) for me that Mark could not. You can also find Mike at the YouTube channel FixOldCameras.

This was the daytime event, Friday at 1:30 PM. So most of the attendees were already there. I suspect that the final rodeo of the stock show (which is about three weeks long and has multiple rodeo events) was packed.

Generally, yes, very much. Were I to do this again from the same seats, I would have liked to have had the 70-200mm f/2.8 (I don't own that lens) instead and just underexposed slightly more. I had to crop the full and bronco photos a LOT more than I wanted to. There's no single focal length that would have been perfect for the whole show. The 77mm was ideal when the action was within about 40 feet. A fast 150mm would have been great for action from there to about 120 feet.

The K-1 performed well beyond what I expected, especially in regards to the AF. The AF performance was spectacular. The only issue I had was that the K-1 overran the buffer at one point and locked up. I had to take the battery out to get it working again. That happens once in a long while with the K-1 when it overruns he buffer.

The frame rate was a little slow for some action, such as the bull riding. I would often have a series where in one shot the guy was on the bull and the next show he was on the ground. Getting mid-air shots on the bulls and broncos was hard and uncommon.

Thank you. That was mt favorite shot of the day, too.
