Works well , basic, one push to start one to stop, only issue i have had and that was with 2 separate units, in that in cold i.e. around -2 Deg C to around 1-2 degrees, the damn thing if left out in the open, i.e. around neck on lanyard it refuses to work, only on warming it up , does it start working again…very weird….

Not yet, just gotta "make do" with my D for the time being, life is tough :( ..Would be interested to hear from users doing any LE work (5 -8) mins, are you using the NR as the dark frame, or are the files clean ? Plus any comparisons of real life use, not spec differences… Cheers...:)

645Z and dark frame behaviour

Hi Ed, its my understanding that the CCD sensor in the 645D, needs this dark frame due to the heat that is generated by this style of sensor, the newer CMOS doesn't have these heat issues and hence you have a choice to turn on or off. I have to say i do a fair bit of LE BW with my 645D (5 MINS +) which is freaking painful as its then a 10 minute shot due to dark frame, but the noise and hot pixels etc are absolutely at a minimum. I have been considering the Sony A7R for this kind of work, due to the lower cost of camera, but its a del head spin with lenses, but it has the decent sized sensor for large prints, would love the Z but its a bit pricy right now and hard to justify…:(:(:(:(:(

@ Madshutter, If i do get any CA yes in ACR one click and it is away, no issues, not even worth losing a wink of sleep about. :-)
Also only time i see any weird artefacts, are at 200% zoom, i might see some red/blue pixels if doing a LE of a few minutes or more, even with dark frame being used, but again usually only visible at 100% or more, i do print a lot so ic heck on my LE prints, and i just fix up, might take 10-15 mins or more.. Nor sure much i can do about that.. ?

@Frank C, I only ever used Bridge/PS /ACR so sorry can't comment, this software does a great job, yes at a price, but i don't have time to research or try lists of free SW even if there is any, i doubt it would come close to what you get with PS… Only my opinion , right or wrong, i can't prove/disprove my statement.. :-)

Last thing i remember reading on this, was that there was no support for the D with C1, reason given was that it was a competitor ? to the phase i guess. Certainly on ability , but not price ;-) , Have used Adobe ACR for 3 years now with the D and does an awesome job, not seeing any of the CA issue you mention unless shooting real high contracts scenes into around the sun etc.. My 2 cents for all its worth ? maybe 5 cents ? have fun out there.:):):):):):):)

Im interested how you got the RAW file into Capture One ? i wasn't aware they supported the Pentax 645D ? Due to being perceived competition etc etc , nice sharp and pleasing lens though.

Hi , i have been shooting with 645D for near 2 years now and all manual focus lenses, bar the 55mmm Kit lens and a 200mm AF, which i MF with as well, unless eyesight is very bad, i would say you will not need it,(maybe for 300mm), i shoot with all the other lenses you mention and find the viewfinder to be spot on and easy to use, of course no good at night.. :-), try it out i think you will be impressed.:):):)

645D and Long Exposure

Hi good luck with your choice, buy the best you can afford is my motto... re LE, longest i have shot with the 645D is 4 mins, copes with it very well, make sure you also invest in a SOLID tripod as well though and use the little IR remote ..all basic stuff which i doubt i need to mention... not into star trails etc per se, really only use the LE for smoothing water and cloud streaks... re the bloody dark exposure i, i think its down to the heat generated by the bigger sensor... there are threads that say it can be turned off, but i have tried and updated firmware and still it cant be turned off, pleasde correct me if im wrong.. So it comes down to timing on sunsets/sunrises... as time and colour moves quick at these times... good luck... Go the Phase i guess if you have the cash..
I also print large have a Canon IPF 44 Inch and the prints off the Penty are fantastic...:):)

Hi, i have been shooting a bit with my 55mm of late, also stitching panos, im finding it sharper and even better than my 35mm... which i guess it should be as designed specifically for the camera... The 35mm is also awesome btw...re which F stop , im using it on landscapes so i generally shoot from F11-F16... depending on subject matter/time of day etc.. i guess as this has a bit more zoom , no need to really go to F16, just habit... results are fine, i print large and prints are awesome... i guess i haven ttold you much other than its a good bloody lens... probalby a but underrated i would say...:):)

What notebook to process 645D DNG files?

Hi , its an internal MAC 500 GB SSD.

SSD holds all my program files and i just store short term my image files, before i back up to ext HD.

As this is only my travel and viewing mac, i don't keep my images on the SSD long term only as a back up while travelling.

I can do quick edits , but as mentioned screen size for me is not enough. :-)

What notebook to process 645D DNG files?

Hi , i process my 645D files on a 4 YO IMAC , and a latest version MAC AIR, fully loaded, with SSD and maxed out RAM.. It runs like a Bullet train, PS6 opens in 3 secs and editing doing Panos /stitching takes seconds... whatever you do get a SSD.. and the biggest you can afford...

On my 4YO Imac, i regularly stitch 3 shot 645D files, takes about 90-120 secs , so not too bad, i only use the AIR when i travel for checking files and backing up to SSD, screen size is small which is the downside for editing, can be done, but m used to the IMAC for real estate..... the IMac is 27 inch..

Never used Windoze so cant comment..

Hope it helps. :):):)

Hey Ryan, just a curios questions, any reason to shoot at ISO 200 ? I understand that that is the default Pentax setting on this camera, but generally as a rule the higher the ISO the more chance of noise.. WIth your style of shooting and these images i guess they could all have been captured at 100 ? Just curious as to the logic or reasons why we all do different things. Great images BTW , lovely work.

I guess i answered my own question in a way, if Pentax have this as default then they must think this is optimum for this camera ?:):)

Cheers ryan, love that first image with the 25mm of Slot Canyon ? or similar ? Yeah i love the odd sun/starburst every now and then, and the 35mm does it beautifully, as good as some Zeiss glass i have seen. SInce going to the 645 i have struggled with filling the frame on occasions, and i guess the 25mm makes this even harder, we dont have the big majestic mountainous landscapes close at hand :-( so you really gotta work hard, i hate throwing away pixels from the 645.. That shot of Valley view and the snow on the boulders is awesome.. great work.
I never go up above F16 anyway for fear of the dreaded refraction..so a non issue.. I have played around with my 55DFA lens and compared it to the 35mm A i have and find i get slightly better micro detail out of the 55, but the 35 is still a stunning landscape lens and my most used. Hence i was hoping the 25mm would be as good if not better with the wider aspect than the 55DFA.

Once again thanks for the feedback. :)

Some great shots Ryan, well done, that lens gives one awesome starburst... i was interested to note none taken with 25mm ?? im chasing one of these as currently using the 35mm as my widest and also stitching panos until i can get the 25mm, did you take the 25mm with you ? any shots from this trip with it ? Would the 25mm view be the equivalent roughly of say 1.5 shots wide with the 35mm ?
Cheers and look forward to more.:):):)

I should have it, as not upgraded to the very latest, will need to dig it up, any idea on what it might be named, but as others say not sure if it is wise to go backwards !! The DF has annoyed me since the purchase, now i just live with it, and time my exposures around sun/clouds/colour etc as best i can. Turned on or turned off it matters not a jot.... all to do with type of sensor and the heat it generates, basic electronics... maybe they can build a cooling fan into the body....heaps of room.:):) anyway let me know if you so desire it...
Cheers
Steven
