Sticky: Pentax K-1 In-depth Review

Have there been any notable improvements via firmware in recent months? Just wondering. One of the biggest negatives I've read concerning the camera is the AF system. Seems like everyone agrees that it can take fantastic pictures - as long as nothing is moving.

Yes, but my point was: would you have done that if you knew that most of lenses you might want for it up the road would cost you a premium? I don't see a lot of Pentax lenses in your signature. ;)

Well, my take on it is that if people have thousands to spend on cameras and lenses, maybe they're not as likely to be buying Pentax cameras - not because they aren't good cameras, but because if they have that much to spend they can afford an even better camera with more features. I suspect that the average person, who decides that $650 for a Pentax K-70 is the best bet for the money for him or her, is buying it with the added expectation that they can also get some good lenses for reasonable prices. If they didn't mind paying top dollar for lenses, they probably wouldn't invest in the Pentax system simply because the camera itself was cheaper. Maybe I'm wrong, but if Pentax/Ricoh is on an upswing already, as people seem to believe (I haven't actually seen any figures myself), then why mess with success?

I like Kai myself, something of an Asian Austin Powers to me, and I usually enjoy his vids, but this "review" by his buds was done poorly. I don't mind mixing in some humor, even if some of it's at the expense of Pentax and the camera, but they completely glossed over the camera's value for the money. It offers a lot for the price.

Just my two cents: all of you going on about Sigma being "pirates" and not paying Ricoh for whatever, and suggesting that Ricoh should design their cameras to be inoperable with Sigma and other third-party lenses, etc., don't seem to be taking into consideration the fact that a big part of the reason that Pentax sells as many cameras as it does now is exactly because of all the cheaper lens options available. I don't see any evidence for thinking that Pentax/Ricoh would sell more cameras and lenses if they switched to a closed ecosystem. It could very well have exactly the opposite effect and speed them toward bankruptcy.

It's probably been posted here somewhere already, but here's a good comparison of the K-70 and K-3 II:

K3 II AF vs K3 AF

Well, aside from the "Improved stability for general performance," whatever exactly that refers to, there was this improvement with v1.20:
  • Optimized performance of HD PENTAX-DA 18-50mmF4-5.6 DC WR RE, HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mmF4.5-5.6ED DC AW and HD PENTAX-D FA ★70-200mmF2.8ED DC AW.

As I noted before, that was the only improvement I had seen in the Ricoh specs for the K3II, that autofocus was better with the new HD lenses - that was before I realized there had been a firmware update. Looks like now the K3 is on par with the K3II, assuming the firmware update worked as expected. So yeah, no improvements with the K3II. ;)

I can't tell you from first-hand experience, but I do know that according to Ricoh's own product information it does offer improved autofocus IF you own one of the new HD lenses:

Feature 3? PENTAX K-3 II | RICOH IMAGING

But if you can afford to spend that on lenses, maybe it would be better to wait for the Pentax full-frame to come out, whenever that might be, and buy that instead, or look for another brand.

Seems like something that could possibly be resolved with a firmware update, but that would beg the question of why haven't they fixed it by now if they could, so maybe not. If they were known for being more on the ball when it comes to firmware updates, I might feel a little more sure on the matter. ;)

Techradar K-S2 review

The main complaints seem to be the video and that the autofocus can sometimes be flaky. Which is what I've read in most other reviews of the S-2, like the CameraStore review, which has been posted elsewhere here. But I have noticed that C-Net, despite seeming to be a sellout in many other categories, seems to be pretty tough with their camera reviews, for all brands.

That would be nice, but unfortunately I'm not rolling in dough. Think I'm just going to wait and see the reviews on the K-3II after it's released. I'm a bit excited about features like the Pixel Shift system and improved shake reduction, etc., but those might turn out to be things that look better on paper than they really are in practice. (The faster focusing would be nice if it worked on any lens besides the ones that cost as much or more than the camera itself, but since it doesn't I can't get too excited about that.) If it all doesn't add up to much, I'll probably save myself some money and go with the K-3, and that way I wouldn't have to do without the popup flash - which I hardly ever use, but it's useful in a clutch. I wish either one had the articulating screen and wireless system of the S-2 - it's too bad you're forced to sacrifice the convenience features of the one to get the better image quality of the other, but it is what it is.

I myself find the flash a great convenience, not for night shots, but for shadow fill outdoors, especially on faces. And useful for macro's, with a diffuser anyway. But I'm just an amateur, so I don't pretend to be an authority on these things. I'm probably not part of the target audience for this camera. :D

How long do I have to wait till they release a camera that combines the best features of the K-3 II and S2 and add a touchscreen? :)

I think I'm with you. I'd be buying it mainly for the still pics, but I don't see any downside to getting great video in the bargain, which you can with a lot of other DSLR's these days. The quirky autofocus is another thing. Still, if you're into shooting outdoors a lot, especially in inclement weather, it has a lot to recommend it.

Pentax K-S2 review | TechRadar

They have have mostly good things to say about it. The only real negatives they list are no touchscreen, some underexposure in certain high contrast situations, and some purple fringing with the kit lens. The purple fringing seems to be the thing they gripe about the most, which is good, because the solution is simple: just don't buy the kit lens. But this line from their final "verdict" makes me wonder:

Maybe it's just me, but the way they word that, if I were a first time buyer reading reviews to help me choose a new DSLR, I might conclude that I should probably think about buying a Pentax only if I couldn't find something by Canon or Nikon that I like and can afford. :hmm:

I was looking at the thread creation time, which when I looked ( I double-checked) said 3 hours ago for both posts. As far as I can tell, it doesn't give you the exact minute and second except for last posts, so I was going off the 3 hour mark - and the fact that I hadn't seen the other thread beforehand. Now it's showing the hour difference, so apparently the system isn't reliable 100% of the time for instantaneous updates - maybe took till the next cron job to make the correct adjustment. In any case, if we keep having this discussion about my off-topic post, we'll really be going off-topic, so let's just leave at it is what it is. No big deal in my book. I already apologized to the OP for it, if it bothered him. And I've run my own forums, and I can tell you it would be a very small matter to me indeed. If a post really bothers me, I delete it or move it, otherwise people can assume I don't much care. And if the OP cares, he can say something.

You know that old saying about assumptions. And if environmental friendliness is also their reason for not including a paper manual, I'm sorry, but I have to say that this is one case where I'm all for chopping down a few more trees. When you reference them as much as I have in the past, constantly checking the index and cross-references and flipping back and forth from one page to another, it's a helluva lot more user friendly than having to read a pdf or a website - especially if you're out in the country somewhere.
