What system for video?

I do professional videography, and while my k-01 and k-r do an excellent job with stills, video files have a LOW native bit rate, even at the highest settings, and footage almost always looks very soft. If the scene is excellently lit, then the image looks alright, but more natural light creates a soft image with tons, I mean tons, of moire. It's just not an excellent source for video in my estimation, reviews for more current bodies don't seem to fair much better.

Here is a very silly video to give you an idea of the softness and moire I am speaking off -

You Tube

I do like the focus peaking however.

I have a decent selection of pentax cameras and lenses, but I find them rather inadequate for video - Pentax is just a stills focused brand, who lags behind when it comes to video quality and features

Do you any of you shoot video with other brands? If so, what are your experiences?

New K-01 won't recognize my 50mm 1.4 M?

I am certain this comes down to user error, and unfortunately I could not find a post that answered this question. I just received a K-01 today and I have to say, for the price I paid for it I am very in love. Far from perfect, but such a great compliment to my k-r.

Any ways, as the title says I put my legacy 50mm 1.4 M lens on the camera and it seems to get confused. It won't let me take a picture or adjust anything. I've tried every mode, Av, M none of them work. On the screen "F--" blinks in red at the bottom right corner and it won't do anything.

What am I doing wrong here? I really bought this camera to use with manual, glass help me here :)

I may end up going cannon, but this would be for a second shooter, even for the video, and for video projects that do not require much post work. I believe I can sell my da40 and get a K-01 with a da40 for about $120 more than the sale price of the DA40!

Hi K-01 owners!
So now that the K-01 is ridiculesly cheap I am very interested in getting one as a back up camera, but also mainly a video camera for use with short films for youtube.

I am should also mention I might be jumping ship in the near future to another camera maker, so while I would keep the K-01, I would sell all my newer lenses and mainly use the k-01 with my vintage lenses. My question is how well does the movie mode work with the old M lenses? Is it easy and give you good options? Or is it difficult and highly limited in options?

K-r and K-01 or K-5?

So I've had my k-r for a year and a half now and I feel like its really taught me a great deal. My only real complaint is the frequent missed focus under tungsten lighting. That said I am looking to step up to a bigger better camera but I am unsure which direction to go.

Option A - Sell my k-r and grab a k-5. The k-5 seems like its pretty much the camera I could use, as I've begun to find myself limited by the k-r in some way, ie no battery grip, no second dial, higher iso noise, etc. The k-5 would pretty much solve the majority of the problems I have with my k-r.

Option B - Grab a k-01 and keep my k-r. I am starting to get involved in video production, and neither the k-r nor k-r are terribly good in this area, however the k-01 is rather solid video performer. The k-01 would solve the tungsten problems, and also give me better high iso performance, however obviously no battery grip.

I'm am kind of torn here, what are the pros and cons of either setup?

Lightroom is great, but I don't think you can do much touch up to people or scenes with it. Lightroom and Gimp would make a powerful duo, better than elements in my opinion because of its limits.

People Soft focus with a fog filter!

So I recently made a post inquiring about soft focus technique, were I was considering using vasoline on a UV filter. Instead I grabbed a Hoya fog filter set, A and B. My goal was to create an David Hamilton esque style shoot and here are some of results. I used a DA 40 with my k-r all shots wide open at iso 800 if I recall correctly. And I used the hoya B fog filter for them all.

Complements and criticisms equally welcomes :)

I have an upcoming photoshoot and I wanted to try and get a David Hamilton style soft focus look to my shots, something I intend to achieve using vaseline on a uv filter. I am wonder if anyone has tried this, what they thought and if they had any tips on how to clean the filter so with out scratching it and leaving it greesy?

I've had my K-r for over a year and despite the tungsten problem its been a pretty reliable shooter. FB pictures any camera will do, as stated above. I mainly shoot with the da40, which used to be a great cheap lens. I am considering either moving to a d7000 or k-5 now, because I need moar camera :)

CS5, PIcassa and RAW files, need some help

So I have, shall we call it, an unorthodox copy of cs5, and it will not open my RAW files, which is really driving me nuts. I had been using picassa to open my raw files, because it was the only program I can find that opens raw files.

The problem with that is that is squishes the picture and seems to remove some of the information. The first instance it opens the picture looks correct, but then picassa squishes the picture resulting in a black bar on the edge of the picture and a darker more washed out look.

Here is a result:

Are there any other good options for opening raw files that I can look into? What can I do here? I have about 60+ photos to edit for a friends fashion website and I cannot get them open with out picassa ruining it.

So until yesterday I'd never ever heard of this lens, but someone recommended it in another thread and I started scouring for information on it. There are two reviews for it on this site, one of which contains no info, and the other which has some really fascinating pictures Seems like this lens produces extremely unusual bokeh.

I am curious to hear from people who have had any experience with this lens, what do you think of it? The few pictures I've seen of it have displayed very odd and beautiful, if distracting, bokeh. I am really considering picking one up just for experimentation, but I would love to hear some stories or see some images from it.

Thanks for the info, this thread pretty much sealed the deal. I did enjoy my da40 a lot, the colors and contrast are to die for, but I really need something of high quality with more versatility. Rep for all.

I've been using an old pentax m 50mm 1.4 for portraits and it rocks my world. Very easy to focus, just use live view and zoom all the way in. Much more difficult to capture moving targets wide open though.

Tamron 28-75 from a da40?

I've read many many reviews (including the dozens on our side) of the Tamron 28-75, and people are saying mostly good things about it. I am considering selling my da40 and getting the Tamron instead. I am curious if anyone has used both and could tell me what they think?

I love the colors and contrast of the da40, but the odd focal length and relatively slow speed for a prime have always bothered me a bit. I recently came into a mint copy of a M 50mm f1.4 which I absolutely love and it has taken away much of my desire to use the da40.

Would you (if you were me) trade a da40 for a tamron 28-75, with a 50mm 1.4 on the side for more prime type stuff? Anyone use both lens, or have much experience with the tamron? Will I lose much contrast/color/etc in switching to the tammy?
