yes - i definitely like the pancolar more! I'm only selling it because I need the cash, not becasue I don't want it! That's a mighty collection of portrait lenses you have to choose from though! How would the FA77 get on in such company?

Have put more pics of the actual lens (taken today) on my flickr stream. I would WAY prefer to sell through here rather than ebay - their fee's going to be north if 50.... sheesh.

here's a general (and very impressive!) flickr search for pancolar 80mm photos:
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=pancolar%2080mm

and here below is my flickr stream with photos of the actual lens:

I agree, the M85 is a fantastic (underappreciated?) lens too - it's very small and light - well worth having - mine will be my main long portrait lens when the pancolar goes...

I'll look out for a K/SMC 85 though, that could be interesting..

ok - mods feel free to delete this in a flash if you think it's too shifty... but It's a valid recommendation I think... This is a lens I have loved a great deal, one of the true great portrait lenses.... will cost as much as an AF suggestion but worthwhile.

disclaimer: I might have a vested interest at the moment in boosting the rep of this lens... *cough*... but truly it doesn't need it.

Is the K100D still a viable platform???

I've been using my K100D pretty much RAW only for four years too, it's still excellent! And 'viability' just got a huge boost from lightroom 3 which seems to have extra noise reduction fairy dust... suddenly noisy pics are cleaned up beautifully. All along the way i've been tempted to upgrade by this or that, but at the end of the day the K100D is still fine!

Item Description
Here's my beautiful M42 pancolar 80mm f1.8 - I hope you're aware that this is an incredibly desirable lens, and it takes lovely photographs - one of my first ever test photos with this lens has become my favourite picture of my daughter so far - it has a great deal of magic in it.
I cleaned and reconditioned the lens and set it up when i got it, and it's tip top, the aperture's snappy, focus smooth. no dust, fungus or anything else - it's clean as a whistle and in as good condition as you're ever likely to see. Must sell now, sadly, to fund other non-photographic requirements :(

If it's not up to scratch I'll take it back. I've only ever had this happen once, on my M85f2 that was revealed to have a slightly sluggish aperture.

"ideal" line up???

here's a suitable M42 lineup of very lovable lenses that wouldn't break the bank (the money's on the 80mm)....

zenith 16mm
czj flektogon 35mm f2.4
czj pancolar 50mm f1.8 or Yashinon dx 50mm f1.4
czj pancolar 80mm f1.8
czj mc sonnar 135mm f3.5

in the realms of AF dreams i'd perhaps go
12-24 f4
fa31 f1.8
maybe 55 f1.4 or da70 if i felt the 50-135 couldn't satisfy with portraits
50-135 f2.8

in AF slightly-smaller-budget-land I'd go
sigma 10-20
tamron 28-75
fa43 f1.9
pentax 55-300
raynox macro

in reality i've a hotchpotch of some of the above-mentioned lenses and some others - gotta love LBA.:(

Yeah thanks for the instructions and photos! It's this part above i'm worried about - I get no sense that the front ring of my lens is keen to come undone, and am hesitant to apply maximum force (turning against my other hand holding the focusing ring) until someone (perhaps yourself!) convinces me that such an action doesn't stress the focus rails or internal arrangements...

Thanks

Hi folks - I have 50mm and 80mm f1.8 pancolars, both with malfunctioning blades, so i'm planning to disassemble them - I've taken the backs off and on, and got my head around the aperture and focus controls, but can't get the front elements off the aperture section - should i have unscrewed this first, while the lens was assembled? as mentioned above i'd worry that that would put all the turning force on the two focus rails..

Any tips? gotchas?
Thankyou

Just a little bump to say that my copy of that Yashinon DS 50mm f1.4 is my very favourite lens of all the ones I own or have owned. I love it - it lives at f1.4 in AV mode on my K100D and does wonderful beautiful things to things I point the camera at.

I just got myself a slik 614cf too - very interested to know if you got a solution to the hook question - ideally not drilling, as i'd like to still use it when i have only the short centre tube in the tripod.

For the same reason i think i'll need to adapt your strap solution too!

k100d battery recommendation

I've got a few sets of eneloops, and some hybrios which seem pretty similar, they work very well in my k100d.

Part of the reason will be the charger - lacrosse (which seem to be sold as technoline in the uk) bc, bl or rc 700 or 900 - i have the technoline bl700 which was the cheapest i could find at the time (the 900 has a faster top charging speed is all, I always use slow anyway)- it is awesome for conditioning and monitoring your batteries. I've been able to put sets of similarly performing batteries together so one doesn't let the other three down.

Seeing all the persuasive arguments for lithium e2 and cr2v here, though, i'm starting to wonder about cost/benefit... I'll plug in my power meter to the charger and see how much electricity (ie cash) it takes to condition a set of 4.

anyone know a good uk/eu source of lithium e2 aa, or cr2v disposable batteries?

Anyone have thoughts on ecological angle? what is the best way to dispose of such batteries?

cheers
mark

M-lens uses with flash

AFAIK the built-in flash always blasts on full for M lenses, so I just click away a few test shots in Manual mode, turning the aperture ring until it looks nice. Cut open fuji film canister makes a good diffuser, a bit of foil in the canister makes it bounce upwards.. Makes for a light travel setup.

with external flash I use 'auto' mode on the flash, and set the camera aperture accordingly.

Yashinon DS 50mm f1.4 M42
I got this lens for 16 with Yashica TL electro X and a photax 200mm f4.5 - that's cheap!

It's auto-only so on my K100D it's always wide open....
and some of these shots were taken with a rubbish adapter (no infinity focus) before I got a real pentax one....
