K-3 III water damage

Very sad, tcwilson! :(

But *none* of the camera manufacturers will warranty against water or dirt. They're not waterproof, they're weather resistant. That's what 'WR' stands for in Pentax nomenclature.

Actual waterproof products have an IP rating, and almost no camera you can buy has one.

Even the little Olympus 'waterproof' cheap compact I had said seals must be checked, maintained and periodically changed professionally. I do kayaking, and my cameras stay in drybags or Pelican-style cases that have gaskets.

Sure, you'd regret it if you try to sell such a thing later unfixed to someone else.

I calibrate all my lenses Psoo, and I think everyone should calibrate a new purchase and also check it for decentreing during the return period. I will not buy a lens from a vendor who doesn't accept returns. We pay a lot of money for these things, we're entitled to one that's up to spec.

I think Digitalis went through three copies of the Sigma 100-300mm f4 (a good design) to get a keeper.

And also bear in mind that the JPGs at least are automatically corrected for vignetting by the camera, it brightens the corners.

But the vignetting is at least 2eV in the corners, according to a test done in this very forum!

And most wide angle lenses from all camera brands suffer from this unless the lens itself is big and heavy, containing a lot of glass.

Yeah, I like these photos, Bobby, but you were hitting ISO 12800, that's what the f2.8 is for! :)

Well, no camera manufacturer can do that. :)

A second camera is a huge advantage, and can simply be an older one anyone already owns.

Since you own the FA31 Limited, I'm surprised you haven't noticed its vignetting.

Here it is, courtesy of Guest Review: Pentax SMC FA 31mm f1.8 Limited - phillipreeve.net

Would this fail the Pentax Forums DA compatibility test? :)

At some point, the players coming towards you with the 70-200 will have their feet left out in landscape orientation ... that's when you can rotate the camera to portrait mode to take some more frames, but at some point you just have to switch to the other camera with your 24-70 or whatever.

I took this picture of a visiting Terrell Owens playing an exhibition game for charity.

Yes, but it's not the AF sensor that identifies the pattern. It's the RGB metering sensor that does that, with 307,000 pixels in the K-3 III instead of 86,000 in previous cameras.

For sports and action shooting today, the K-3 III is *the* Pentax of choice.

Wide angles vignette on full frame at the wider apertures, nonpigliounoshoot, especially little ones like the K28 f3.5, that's how they are. The DFA 28-105 is the same, so is a Zeiss 25mm or whatever.

Compensate in post processing as you see fit.

?

There's no speculation, Ulrich.

The K-3 III has more than 300,00 pixels in its sensor now.

Check out all the videos (like Kobie has made) for focus jumping to the eye, for example.

Those capabilities are completely new, but you must obey the documentation.

I would use a tripod, FlyingEagle. Turn off IBIS altogether, and shoot with a delay to avoid shutter/mirror shock.

I think you could struggle, Bobby. APS-C and slow lenses means your ISO is going to be high when your shutter speed is 1/1000s, for example.

Without a second body, you're forced to switch between your 300 (which is magnificent) as you move along the sidelines to the 18-135 when getting close to the end zone.

It is not. In the old cameras, the pattern under the focus point is registered and in real time, if that pattern appears under an adjacent point, the focus is shifted to that point.

In the K-3 III, the whole picture or an area of the picture is examined for the camera recognising a face or a bird or whatever. The focus will jump to an eye, for example.

Your K-3 II just cannot do this, Ulrich, it has one third the precision!

What the K-3 III does is similar to what the Sony A9 II I used in March this year does.

You can see in my picture below there were plenty of tempting lines and edges other than my subject, the skill is to lay the focus point on our target and just our target. And not the dark part of the rider's outfit, either, that's useless, there is no distinct line there. The target would've been the border of the white patch below it, my lens is the Tamron 70-200 screwdrive like yours but it kept up enough at f3.5 here.

You will need to make sure you're positioned so that the subject is frontally lit for you to do AF-C, single point Expanded Area, preferably with back button focus. A back lit subject will be hard to acquire a line, especially in the poor conditions of a stadium.

I think you are getting confused, Ulrich!

The subject recognition I am talking about and the Zone modes it needs do not exist in the older K-3.

The resolution is too low.

The new K-3 III triples the number of pixels, so it can do eye and bird focus in the OVF, for example.

You cannot do that with the K-3.

That is why the manuals are now different, and have additional options.

Page 62 explicitly says: "Subject Recognition: You can make settings so that the recognized subject is
prioritized while autofocusing when [AF Active Area] is set to [Auto Area] or [Zone Select]."

Not Expanded.

Then you will have problems.

*All* PDAF sensors from every camera brand need a line to split like the old rangefinders. Mirrorless cameras are more limited because they cannot use both horizontal and vertical lines, Pentaxes have cross points to do that.

CDAF is even worse in swimming with water bubbles, because there may be nothing of high contrast on the subject. Same problem in any backlit scene! :)

I like shooting football, because the coloured uniforms usually have stripes or clearly defined bands of colour where I can focus on their boundary.

We have extensive outbreaks in our two largest cities, unfortunately. We're in lockdown. The R value is remaining above 1 because enough people are not complying this time with lockdown/curfew/masks. A sizable minority is not getting tested when sick - one guy in his twenties died in his own home. Clearly he'd been ill for some time but didn't act on it.

It's not just his death, it's about who of his social set with a similar mentality did he infect that are 'out there' somewhere?

Very important in this scenario to not change global saturation and hue, Dougie.

Go around with selection tools like the brush and alter each area in your picture individually until you're happy! :)
