$ony A7 Compact FF

It's going to get cheaper. Sony has some seriously competitive full frame pricing right now. And a lot of pretty reasonable priced primes from them and third party. I'm tempted by that A7Rii for $1300 and some prime lenses.

A7 $700
A7R $800 (36mp sensor like K-1)
A7R2 $1300
A7II$1400
A73 $1700

Sony is doing great financially so is Fuji. Ricoh, Nikon, Canon and Panasonic are pretty bad. As for low volume high margin models if you mean over 1k yes. For FF they're all cranking out inexpensive models to try and get people into their lens ecosystems for the next decade-plus. It's looking like attrition with Sony having lots of cash elsewhere to fuel driving others out of the market and being the dominant player. In the end probably a Sony/Canon world as the dominant players. Nikon may go the way of Pentax to small scale as they aren't capturing mirrorless market share. Panasonic may end its camera division.

Fuji is doing well because of covid ironically.

I mean look at the current prices for entry full frame, that doesn't strike me as low volume high price strategy like Leica. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 500-600 dollar Full Frame from Canon or Nikon in this coming year at entry level as they try to lock in market share of customers into their lens ecosystem. Sony and now Canon this year are pedal to the metal in mirrorless. Nikon will struggle to keep up.

Canon RP $800
Sony A7 $700, A7Rii $1300 A7iii $1700
Nikon Z5 $1500

I think it was the only option for Pentax to go all in for SLR in a Fuji kind of way. But who knows if they will last as Ricoh isn't doing great financially either. But Pentax has been doomed forever and still here so who knows.

The R5 is what I'm honed in on right now if I decide to jump to mirrorless. I feel like this will come down to a Sony/Canon market as the dominant players.

The image stabilization is nuts on that R5. Also I find the 800 F11 a weird but actually cool lens and not expensive by telephoto standards. With what? IBIS at 8 stops of stabilization! that makes F11 not so bad.

Maybe they'll take the approach of the D780 then and have a live view separate focusing system similar to mirrorless.

I hope it's just as good as the D750 and I'll be very happy. D500 would be icing on that cake if it makes it to that level.

I think DSLR's will continue with MILCS features in the live view like what Nikon did with the D780 for a while tbh. Or until sales wane to the point where it's not worth the effort.

I think the longterm market will decide OVF vs EVF. The mirrorless lineup really just seemed like them saying "hey we better offer our base this tech or they might jump to Sony" which with Sony's growth was happening. I also highly doubt they will abandoned SLR anytime soon unless Z cameras become the dominant camera. Also smart phone users are used to electronic displays so for them EVF is probably preferential and they realize that. Film users are accustomed to optical.

For now a huge base of professionals shoot with their DSLR's and they don't upgrade until they wear them out for the most part.

The D750 was a huge camera for overall use and for wedding photographers. The D780 just said hey, you like that mirrorless stuff but still prefer OVF? We'll add it to the live view for you. So now that thing has the 273 point AF or whatever it is on the live view just like the Z6 while keeping the 51 points PDAF in the optical viewfinder from the 750 which is a great AF and gets the job done. That doesn't seem like abandoning the market. I bet we'll see a D860 with the same in a year or two adopting the Z7 improvements in live view.

So the promise to stick with OVF and a traditional DSLR. Fair enough. I'm with you on preferring OVF myself. I'm not allergic to EVF but I don't "get" the craze. I have an OMD.

The question is will Nikon and Canon abandon DSLR or just run production of both because I have a feeling there is a LOT of Canikon shooters who are very much like you who prefer the DSLR, many of them professionals. It would seem nuts to me for them to abandon that market (which is probably 90% still for them). Many in 10+ years when it's dwindled but I highly doubt anytime soon.

As I mentioned above the move with the 780 to just add the benefits of mirrorless to Iive view on the DSLR's was an indication that they'll keep building them for those who prefer optical.

Personally with my OMD or X100s the EVF is just a shaded live view. Really that's it. I use the X100s in optical 90% of the time. OMD (It's an EM10 ii) is just so compact you can carry it with an array of lenses in a tiny padded case for travel and it's nearly as good as APS-C for image quality. It's a shame Olympus was sold this year.

I can see the appeal of a promise to continue support for SLR. A declaration of we aren't changing, this is the way. That might work well if Canon and Nikon totally exit SLR production.

That's basically what EVF has always been to me in miniaturized form. I think Canon and Nikon dove in because Sony's eating up of market share really scared them and continues to do so.

There will be some segment of the market that continues to prefer OVF and we'll see if Canon and Nikon stick around with Pentax to meet that market or they just go all in for mirrorless. I think the assumption is the later but it's not written in stone. The D780 was just released to include mirrorless improvements so that's kinda an indication that they may look at this as a split market and support both by once and a while adding what was developed in the Z line to the DSLR's.

They got you lol. The used lens market was a big plus for me when I started with them. It was Weather sealing and IBIS that drew me in.

The controls are still the best in any system overall IMO. I'm still making faces at the D-750 once and a while with it's layout compared to the K-3 which seems to have everything as it should be and I'm very happy the replacement K-3 body is similar.

The lastest DXO prime is pretty nice. I agree on keeping it a true "negative" and not a cooked weird file. I see potential there though. It's all just a very advanced HDR mode.

I feel like sensors hit the wall from about the K-5 era onward for performance other than a few ISO tricks in accelerators and BSI. Really it's been add megapixels, keep previous ISO and DR if able.

Of course it can but it's not the same. It's a luxury having both in the viewfinder. The D780 basically just embraced that principle by doing everything the z6 can in the live view including it's AF system. After all the EVF is just "tiny live view"

I agree on ISO being "good enough" now with APS-C and FF after the KP came out. My K-3 while it lacks the D750 still works fine if I use the latest noise reduction tools in RAW. When looking at RAW's for KP they are very close to the 24mp FF sensors at up to 12800 which I rarely go over so for me at least there isn't really improvement that would trigger an urge to spend a few thousand for an extra stop of ISO at ISO 51200 for example.

I think the sensors have kind of hit the wall and future improvements will come in how they increase Dynamic Range and color science behind the brands. It's why Apples ProRAW is exciting to me. Not because I want to go run around with an iPhone only but because I want that to trickle into DSLR and Mirrorless. Imagine what iphones computational tricks would look like on a K-1 sensor for example.

Likely this K-3 iii will have a similar sensor to the latest Fuji's (it's a good sensor) with maybe the accelerator attached to boost it at high ISO. It'll probably match the recent 24MP Full Frame cameras or be extremely close. So for that the Pentax will be really nice. If they get a D-500 like Autofocus in there, awesome. Then just give me some fast motors to complete that and happy Pentaxian.

Someone mentioned that Pentax should revive a film body and I actually think that it would probably sell today.

I agree EVF isn't the "best" it's just different. I have an OMD mirrorless, all it is is a tiny liveview, good for some things and that lack of mirror box enables things like livebulb (bulb mode you watch expose in real time) Livecomp( expose one image then ONLY highlights get added, like lightning, you expose your landscape and wait, as lightning strikes it only adds that and the light effect around, it's actually super useful) and Procapture (buffers at 60fps so when you hit shutter you got it) IMO Olympus, while they failed and are going to be dismantled had the best implementation of mirrorless.

Fuji nails it with the XPro3 and the X100 series with hybrid viewfinders that are a true optical viewfinder (albeit rangefinder) and an EVF you can fip back and forth with a lever. Its my favorite and if Pentax made that in a DSLR that would be a KILLER feature and best of both worlds.

I agree on Pentax DSLR ergonomics and button setup. Pentax is still my favorite and probably the only reason I pick up my K-3 over the D750 because the D750 has better image quality. Pentax menus and buttons are easy and make sense to me. Nikon put things all over in weird places. Fuji is the BEST if you just want a few dials like an old school camera but the internal menus on at least my X100s are confusing and not intuitive if you need to go in there, good news is you basically don't need to. Olympus OMD is tiny compared to K-3 or D-750 and it's kind of it's own thing, amazing for travel, the best travel camera honestly.

As you can see Im a camera enthusiast and not really stuck with one brand.

I'm excited for the K-3 iii and it'll replace my K-3 if they get it right. I want a new 16-50 too my current one has a dead SDM and I would like a faster motor because that was one of my favorite and most used lenses.

Fight? no, just pointing out that Pentax has some competition out there and it's a much tougher market.

What would you do if you had no camera gear today and were starting new? If Pentax why? Compared to the other options? That's basically what I'm saying. I'm not trying to start a forum war. I'm saying it's a tough sell these days.

I'm honestly asking the question of what do they offer in 2020 that makes them unique?

I know I'm going to get salem witch trialed and it's close to Halloween but I was asking and observing as to why one would start fresh with Pentax in 2020.

Correct I'm not heavily bias toward Pentax. Burn the witch!

I'm just making the point that in 2020 it's not an easy market and Pentax needs to compete.

Hopefully, the K3 iii has top of the line AF-C and a best in class APS-C sensor, I'll be first to congratulate and be excited for that. But I'm not blind to the fact that it's seriously competitive in the camera world and other brands are offering some juicy products for less.

If this forum is only for those who will only praise Pentax and never say anything other than praise then that's a sad state of affairs.

Asking $1900 for APS-C when the Z-5, A7Rii, RP, Z6 etc all cost less and will most likely outperform the K3 iii is probably not going to win new users. OVF is not that strong a "feature". Also Fuji XPro 3 has both OVF and EVF for around that price and it's made with sexy titanium.

What do they do really well that stands out from the crowd in 2020?

Fuji is tactile in so many good ways. Pentax doesn't offer that. It's just a standard DSLR body, well built but it's not Fuji with great dials and a "get the tech out the way" design philosophy. Fuji Primes are way sexier IMO then Pentax, FAST and many are weather sealed unlike the limited lenses.

If I were brand new today I would be buying into Fuji not Pentax. They have hybrid viewfinders so you can have your OVF and your EVF.

No full frame? They have better medium format. And at this point the APS-C sensors are basically as good as full frame. KP for example looks basically the same as my D750 at high iso, it's extremely close. I guess if you want tons of megapixels, but then, medium format or A7R IV with 61 megapixels.

Pentax is a great brand for collectors of older glass for sure. And the owners are pretty loyal.

The only brand that stirs me up with nostalgia of film shooting from being a kid through to college is Fuji. Those dials get me and how the Xpro even has the viewfinder lcd flipped with a little film LCD to keep the camera as mechanical feeling as possible. I freaking love that lol.

The problem with selling emotion is when a perspective buyer picks up a Fuji. Those things are bliss for nostalgia shooting. The Xpro 3 and X100 series in particular.

Mee,

I’m with you regarding a refresh on the lenses. I have the 50mm 1.8 for Pentax and for Nikon. The Nikon is fast and quiet while the Pentax is zip zip sounding with the screw drive. Not many people like that.

Being I have multiple systems in use I’m not brand loyal other than I’d rather use my lenses with a body that’s good enough then spend a ton building new systems any more than I already have. What drew me to Pentax a decade ago was a more complete system of APS-C with weather sealing and IBIS. Nikon and Canon at the time seemed to cripple hammer everything APS-C to protect the Full Frame lineup and use it as a gateway to upgrade. Pentax was all in with the kitchen sink of features on the APS-C lineup they had.

Fast forward to now and Fuji exists with a killer lineup of primes and AF, weather sealing and better IBIS. If i were new to market for APS-C that’s where I’d look. Or for the same price just go full frame. The A7Rii is like 1400 dollars right now. Tamron sells really good primes for it for like 300 a piece, a steal in 20, 35 and some inexpensive but great 85mm exist in other makes. I’m tempted. That camera demands top level resolution to get the most from that 42mp sensor though.

Honestly Pentax would be a really tough sell in it’s current state in comparison. Sony and Fuji lead mirrorless IMO and Nikon/Canon still have a strong lineup of DSLR gear in full frame for the same price as Pentax APS-C.

I have 7 Pentax lenses so I’m what Pentax is after, as are all of us here to sell the K3 iii. But a new buyer?

They need fast motors in glass. They need a 150-600 to go with that K3 iii. 150-450 doesn’t cut it compared to the other options in the other brands.

If they do that it would be much more attractive. Sony is very strong though and selling Full Frame for pretty competitive prices, are weather sealed, better IBIS than pentax, way beyond in AF, pixel shift etc. They’re banking on Canon and Nikon exiting DSLR for mirrorless and leaving behind customers who want to still shoot with a optical viewfinder. I doubt the exit for Canon and Nikon will be fast, likely a decade with the user base having tons of glass and mirrorless not being “better” in image quality or AF in any giant leap from something like a D780 or 850.

The problem with going for nostalgic “character” in shooting is Fuji exists and it just better at that. I have an X100s, it’s tactile bliss for shooting. The Xpro 3 offers amazing primes and an optical/EVF so you get the best of both worlds with IBIS and weather sealing. Fuji is just better at that game.

I would say many of the D-500 users are doing so with a large telephoto lens. Birding and sports seem to be the reason for its existence.

Adding 12FPS and improved AF-C seems like it would benefit telephoto users more than landscape photographers to me?
