I consider a rebrand to be lenses made by tamron for pentax brand, even if pentax puts the propriety lens coating on then ships it back.
A licensed product would be Pentax/Ricoh purchasing the optical formula and manufacturing it from scratch themselves.
For cost convenience they may also be sourcing parts from tamron or their suppliers.

The key difference is where the profits flow to and who has control of the manufacturing process and timeline.

Surely they were waiting for the new backlit sensor from Sony, which got delayed due the earthquake. It may seem in hindsight that they should have released a version 3, but they may have used up all the components since they had scheduled a new body for the new sensor, only to be left in the lurch.

Well I suppose we have aerobright 3 in that case. Plus also multicoat HD whatever that means.
From the DFA*50 pentax page

The lens is treated with PENTAX-developed Aero Bright Coating II* ó a lens-coating nanotechnology employing a super-low refractive film fabrication process. By coupling this advanced lens coating with the high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating** ó which reduces average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum to less than 50% of conventional multi-layer coatings ó this lens effectively reduces flare and ghost images to a minimum even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting. By incorporating three super-low dispersion glass elements and one aspherical element in its optics, it effectively compensates chromatic and spherical aberrations, and produces brilliant, high-contrast images with edge-to-edge sharpness. Since it minimizes distortion even at a focusing distance of approximately one meter, it produces crisp, distortion-free images over the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance to infinity.

*A state-of-the-art, PENTAX-original lens coating technology developed from nanotechnology. It applies a silica aerogel layer with a uniform porous structure over a regular multi-coating layer to reduce surface reflections across a wide wavelength range and produce crisp, high-quality images.

**HD stands for High Definition.

Sure is confusing.

Well they have that patent for variable transparency mirror coating, so I'm going to guess we will finally see the ovf/evf switchable hybrid.

Aerobright 2 was put on the dfa* 70-200 and is essentially just HD over SMC. However it seems the marketing folks are enamored with HD terminology and so they are wanting to call both HD and HD/SMC the same thing. They were probably annoyed because he went off pitch. The Dfa* 50 was marketed as HD even the though the coating was described as HD nanocoat over traditional multicoat, ie aerobright 2.

K3 replacement was always going to be dependant on when sony released a new BSI sensor. I think its finally appeared in the Fuji so Ricoh now have the parts needed to build the camera. The fact we have a DA 16-50 lens appear at the top of the roadmap, corresponding to new 16-50/2.8 patent, suggest that the K3 replacement may have finally moved to the front of the que. Expect it to be released at the same time as new DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135.

Considering the new patent for the updated 16-50/2.8, it a good sign the K3 replacement is their next camera priority.

There are a million 43ltd and da*55 photos though which are not in the 50 club. Strangely enough people tend to shoot with their favourite lenses, and their favorite lenses are also often their best lenses. The fa 50 and da 50 are nobody's favorite if they have pockets deep enough to afford limiteds of star lenses.

The key with nano coats is getting the partical size right, the particals are huge compared to what is vaporised and deposited by vaccume in traditional multicoats. I am working from memory but i rember when the HD limiteds came out that it was stated that it was much cheaper as vaccum desposition was not used. Aerobright 2 being nanocoat on smc was stated when the 70-200/2.8 was released. I may have been putting 2 & 2 together since when HD was released it was stated it could be used by itself or in conjunction with SMC for even better performance. Then aerobright 2 was stated as being more robust than the original so logically it would use hd, although it could be a different formula.

The introduction of the II models sort of messed up the sequence. Iím waiting for a K3 replacement as well but I donít expect to see one until Sony releases an APS-C version of is new BSI 150mp medium format sensor. The KP would be really nice for shooting with limiteds mind you.

HD coating doesnít use vapour deposition but instead its pained on, making it much cheaper to apply as a consequence. Its a layer of hard bonded silica nanospheres. The bonding mechanism is what makes it special, as other nanocoatings are extremely fragile. Aerobright 2 was originally described as HD over SMC while Aerobright 1 was a fragile nanocoat over SMC. The marketing on the *50 saying ABC2 is aerobright over multiple layers of HD does not make any sense, so Iím going to assume its a marketing error. Nanocoats and multi coats work by two different mechanisms. I makes sense to use them together.

Its been made with future FF cameras in mind, not 8 year old APS-C Cameras. 43ltd and 55/1.4 give great results on APS-C. The New 11-18/2.8 is being made with the KAF3 mount so that older users do have access, so its not like they donít care about legacy camera users. At some point they need to move forward and doing so with lenses that are covered by existing older lenses is a good way to do it, especially since the target audience is K1 users.

I'm assuming their waiting on a new aps c sensor from Sony's new 150mp MF wafer. No point releasing a k3 replacement with the same old sensor.

The whole delay was caused by slow throughput due to the high precision requirements and QC. Doubling the size of the production line and no of staff assembling the lenses is a huge cost that can be avoided just by taking their time. Overcapacity is a killer in manufacturing.

The solution is buy it from somewhere with a good return/exchange policy. Itís flip a coin stuff where you just have to find a copy that works with your camera. Check out the photos from it and the 31ltd before deciding though, then go for the one with the rendering you prefer.

I was referring to ricoh doing any of the optical assembly of the tokina lenses. As noted the assembly is very time consuming, hence why the delay. So far the Tokina lens appears to share the optical design as well as the ring sdm and electronic aperture. There is obviously potential for further cost reduction if pentax assembled most or the Tokina lens as well, but that level of connection would be new and not anticipated.

The pentax 15-30 and 24-70 clearly have different coatings than the tamrons. The reflective tint is green like other pentax lenses vs yellow of the tamron. A direct comparison was made on an adapted sony that show a marked improvement in flare resistance HD24-70mmWR-006 | Robert Mitchell | Flickr

The upgrade cycle is dead as the technology has matured. We havenít seen a new aps-c sensor since the K3 came out, presumably why its replacement has been put on the back burner. The key for manufacturing is to match capacity to output. Pentax has already cut cost by outsourcing, stoped trying to compete for entry level consumers with the huge cost involved in suppling dying B&M stores, and has instead gone after informed customers who value all the features pentax brings (which compared to canon and Nikon is a lot) Why would a Pentax user leave if he looses performance by doing so. Hence why releasing products such as the DFA*50 which are ďBest in classĒ is the perfect strategy moving forwards. It retains customers because they loose out if they leave.

DA*11-18/2.8 delay to 2019

Its also possible that the full price of the DFA*50 would have been $1500 if the sharing arrangement with tokina wasnít done. Its clear the lenses share the same parts such as motor, aperture, glass blanks and maybe even the front housing. Ricoh most likely gets some/most of these things made by specialist 3rd party manufacturers and would get a better price for bigger volumes. Tooling for such small batch productions is such a big cost that I would even think pentax would potentially do the grinding and polishing before shipping the elements to Tokina for coating and assembly. I doubt Ricoh would be doing the optical assembly based on how slow production is, although if the Tokina comes out priced higher than the pentax after the demand has been filled then they just may well be doing that. There was some idle speculation that Ricoh had invested in Tokina a one point.

Pentax would allways have had some sort of consumer tele lens planned to pair with the 28-105. Either a 70Ė200 or 70-300. The fact it was brought forward may just have been driven by market demand more than anything else. They would definitely have had designs for both prior to the K1 release. Of course it is also possible they have done a deal with a 3rd party manufacturer, but until we see a lens we wont know.

People forget that Canon and Nikon do not have a trinity of pro quality APS-C zooms and instead try to jawbone their consumers into upgrading to FF. Getting the 11-18, 16-50 with new optics and 50-135 with new motor to the market for the release of the K3 replacement would be quite high on Ricohís priority list. If they can get the IQ of the 11-18 and new 16-50 to the same level as their top flight * lenses then they will have an extremely competive APS-C pro system.
