Pentax K-3 for USD $950 - Free Shipping at Fumfie

It's funny - Resellerratings, Yahoo, and Epinions all rank them 4 stars or better. Once you read the reviews - you wonder how they ever got 4 stars with so many horror stories. Maybe they were good at one time, but after reading the links you provided, I would never order anything from them.

Actually - their reviews aren't that bad:

I have not personally bought anything from them, but I have used stores ranked well on resellerratings.com before and had good luck.

That looks like a leaf shutter lens - so my guess is that the L stands for leaf shutter.

If you bought it with a credit card you might check if you have a damage protection clause. My daughter knocked my brand new K10 off the counter when it was a few days old. My credit card company paid for the $300 repair.

I would make sure that you are perfectly perpendicular to the paper you are photographing. One way to do this is to place a small mirror in the center of the paper. If you are perfectly perpendicular to the paper, you will see the reflection of the camera and lens in the mirror.

Sigma 70-200 with a 1.4X teleconverter? That would give you a 98 to 280 F4.0 that focuses fast. You could also use it without the converter when you need speed.

D FA 100mm 2.8 macro vs Pentax Asahi Takumar 135mm 2.5

The Takumar 135 F2.5 is a non-SMC lens and it is only 4 elements in 4 groups. It is a mediocre lens at best. I would not pay $50 for one.

The Pentax K 135 F2.5 is 6 elements and is rightfully a very well regarded lens.

Electrical contacts question.......

The contacts you are referring to on the lens mount are not used by the autofocus on F series lenses since the motor is in the camera. The only contacts used by the autofocus are on SDM lenses.

The contacts you are referring to transmit aperture information to the camera. I think that you may have some mechanical problem with the lens.

FA50/1.4 vs FA50/2.8 Macro

I think the question is - how much existing light photography do you do indoors? I find that I much prefer flash photography indoors. If you use bounce flash effectively, it gives a pretty natural lighting look. I rarely use my FA50 using existing light, so I rarely use F-stops less than 5.6 - in fact I usually prefer to use my Sigma 18-50 zoom indoors. Hmmm - I think I should consider selling my FA50.

Sigma 400mm 5.6 APO Tele Macro - still around?

The item pictured in the ad is the Sigma 400mm F5.6 APO Tele Macro. The 72mm filter is an error, or the photo is an error. The filter size should be 77mm as several people have posted. I have one and I like it a lot. What other lens can you take a 1:3 macro shot from 1.6M away! The focus is fast and accurate although it can tend to hunt in poor light.

Cleaning fungus out of a lens.

I have found that MEK works really good for cleaning fungus. Be careful not to get it on anything plastic. It is available at most places that sell paint.

I have found that this tool works really well for removing most lens rings but it is not cheap:

I would return it. Even though it will probably will not affect image quality, for that kind of money I would expect perfection. You also have to consider resale value if you ever sell it. If I remember correctly, Adorama will not charge return shipping and are very good about returns.

How to achieve 5:1 magnification ?

I think I am understanding what you are asking now. Since the original photo was 4672 pixels wide and covered 2.5mm, the pixel size was 0.53 um. When I uploaded the original file to flickr, the site resized the photo and did not keep a copy of the original size. I am sorry to say that I don't have the original.

How to achieve 5:1 magnification ?

The full frame picture shows approximately 2.5mm. Since the sensor is 24mm across, this is 10:1 magnification. This photo is not cropped in any way. This is not meaningless - if you can make a subject 2.5mm in size take up the entire 24mm frame - this is 10:1 magnification.

As you can see from this link, the working distance is not too bad. This is a 24mm reversed with a 2X macroconverter.

Those are not crops - they are full frame resized. They are actually 10:1.

I am talking IQ also. If you are talking color, contrast and resolution, I took pictures both with and without the converter and could not tell any obvious differences in IQ. If there was a loss in IQ due to the converter, it was minimal.

Look at the detail in the picture I took of the metal ruler. Remember - the markings are 1mm apart. You can see every little scratch and imperfection in the surface of the ruler. If this does not convince you, take out a $1 bill and look at the size of the eye on top of the pyramid, then look at the picture in the post. I know that this is subjective proof, but it is hard to get test targets optimized for 10:1 reproduction. :)

I reversed a 24mm lens on a Vivitar 2X macro teleconverter and was able to achieve 10:1 ! It was a pretty inexpensive and compact setup. Look at the following two posts for some photos and a picture of the setup.

Pentax 85mm f/2 -- does yours focus past infinity?
Posted By pentaxman
Replies: 10
Many lenses will focus past infinity a slight amount by design. I have heard that this is to accomodate infrared film. The infinity focus can be easily adjusted. Having a split prism focusing screen makes it a cinch. You just loosen the screws holding the barrel with the distance markings to the focusing helix and turn it to line up with infinity when the lens is focused at infinity. Then just retighten the screws.

Vivitar Lens Help

The lens is made for Vivitar by Tokina and is a very nice lens. The C/FD means that the lens mount is designed to fit a Canon camera. You might be able to adapt it, but you would be better off selling it and using the money to buy a Pentax mount version.
