Improvements to the DA limited primes

I would love to see them release all weather versions of the DA limiteds. I would also like to see them tweak the DA 40 and 70 to make them full frame compatible. I know there are folks who say they are already, but they have really weak corners on a K-1, even stopped down a bit. Otherwise, I think they are good the way they are. The point of them is ultimate sharpness, it is real world performance in small packages with excellent build quality.

Does that really add more value?

I don't think that people mention these things to "add value" to their photos. I think they mention it for one of three reasons (1) to explain and deficiencies in the photo, (2) to indicate how good their gear is (that is to say with IBIS they couldn't have gotten this particular image), or (3) for informational purposes. I don't usually mention if something is shot handheld, but I do mention if I used what is for me a really high iso setting (greater than 6400) more as an informational thing for those who view it.

As far as SOOC images, I don't particularly see the point. Yes, I have taken plenty of SOOC jpegs, but they aren't as good as if I process them and once I am going to work cropping a little bit or sharpening I might as well just shoot RAW.

Rant: camera prices and quality per format

Sony feels obligated to release a new camera for every new sensor that they come up with. Sort of the opposite of Canon who used the same 18 megapixel APS-C sensor in about 10 different cameras.

As prices go up, brands sell less and they have to increase prices even more just to stay in one place. I can foresee that by the time we get to the A9 IX it will be priced at 699,999 retail price and Sony will sell exactly two copies.

I thought they said that there were four prototypes. My impression was they were all exactly the same, but I suppose there could be slight differences between them.

DA35 Macro, only sharp at close focus?

I think Bruce is right. I would try focus adjustment. I think your camera is not focusing correctly. You could try focusing with live view and see if you get sharper images with that.

Ratings and Reviews do you trust them and why?

I think some. I just looked at the DFA *50 reviews, which is a fairly new lens. On the first page of reviews one review has 8 "this review has helped me" and one has 4 of those and there are a couple with 3 of those. It seems like you could sort by those.

That's probably not a good example because it has only two pages of review so it wouldn't take long to read them all, but for a lens with a couple of hundred reviews it would be handy.

I know when I'm looking through that section I do click if I think a review is helpful.

Based on number of people who said a review was helpful? Its already there, it just isn't used to sort reviews.

On the Pentax review section here, I wish Adam allowed for some sort of way to sort user reviews based on usefulness. Often the interesting review with most useful images is buried on page 5 or 6. This is particularly so with a lens that many folks have purchased like the FA 50 or some of the DA limiteds.

Nikon may do RAW adjustments to their own lenses, but they certainly aren't doing them to Tokina's third party lens.

I don't use reviews for cameras at all. If I do, I don't pay attention to the conclusion and read the narrative. The problem is that camera ratings tend to incorporate a whole bunch of stuff that I probably am not interested in -- docking a camera say, for no 4K video or for slower frame rates, whereas my important thing is ultimate still image quality. That always seems to take a back seat, I guess because reviewers assume that any camera on the market can do that.

For lens reviews I like user reviews, particularly with photos in real life situations. Test charts can be interesting and certainly looking at a site like ePhotozine and seeing where a particular lens has peak sharpness (center and border) can be interesting, but since I shoot most of my lenses stopped down a bit, flare resistance, contrast, micro-contrast and colors are actually more important to me and those don't tend to be emphasized as much reviews.

DP Review is the worst because they are so unbalanced. It feels as though they decide at the outset of they like a piece of gear and then look for things to either give it accolades for or disparage it for. Not great and I only see their work because folks typically post it here ever time they release a new review a Pentax item.

You Tube is the worst because (a) I read much faster than reviewers can speak and I get bored by them and (b) it is the worst possible format for showing how good or bad a camera or lens is from a still photograph standpoint. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video of photo might be worth 10. On a good day.

I looked into it and I think I am wrong. The K3 II only offered motion correction on as the option of in-camera development.

I think the motion correction algorithm has improved with newer cameras and is done better in Raw Therapee, but it was offered on the K3 II.

I think the huge thing is that new mounts mean new lenses. And honestly, if we are looking at the new mounts, many of their lenses are very expensive. Sometimes they are ones that can't be matched on traditional SLRs (f2 zooms, sub f1 primes), but I think there is a strong hope in the brands that even though people can shoot their existent lenses on the new MILCs, that over time they will update their lenses and that means more money for the brands making them.

It could be, although Dave Etchells makes it pretty clear that he is out regardless. The grind of testing every camera and churning out unbiased content has worn him down and he doesn't want to keep doing that (although I'm sure he wants the other employees to continue to have jobs). That makes it a tougher sell since he was the face of Imaging Resource and the driver of their high quality material and someone with deep pockets would have to question what they are getting if the buy IR without him on board.

I think the odds are good that both the KP and K70 stick around for awhile -- mainly because the K70 is "paid for" and there is no way that they can price the KP low enough to fit that price tier. And the K70 is super-nice for what it is. You won't find many other cameras on the market at that price that feature a full pentaprism OVF, articulating screen, and dual control wheels.

And it even features a pop up flash, a feature left behind by many high end cameras!
