For what it's worth (not much), the K and M42 mounts have a 45.46mm registration distance.

The reason for the 43mm lens focal length is its near-equivalence to the film/sensor diagonal (a proxy for "normal" focal length across formats).

But yes I agree that certain focal lengths are easier to design for specific registration distances.

A few from the most recent roll through the 6x7. All with the 105mm lens, and 20+ year-old Kodak Pro 100. I rated it at ISO 50, which seemed pretty good exposure-wise. Colors are decent too. I chalk it up to good storage by the previous owner and myself. The lab scans are acceptable for my use. To get better quality (IMHO) would probably require sending it out of state to a premium lab or investing in my own setup, which I'm not currently prepared to do.

I love the dead trees of the American Southwest--such character. (Of course I want most of the trees to stay alive...)

Pretty sure this was wide open. Should have stopped down one or two to get the full shrub in focus, but got the sort-of-miniature look going so there's that.

The compression of the 400 works great with these scenes, I think. Nice shots.

Yes, I am almost sad to say that acquiring the 20-40 has greatly reduced my usage of my 21 and 40 primes. I still consider myself a "prime guy" (it's all I use on film), but the 20-40 is great for a walkaround WR zoom when you don't know what you'll see and can't/don't want to bring any other accessories.

Edit to say I ADORE my 21 Ltd, and would have recommended that lens before your LBA resolved the dilemma, lol. The 20-40 is silent, stylish, WR, has good IQ, and is generally very USEFUL, but I don't love it they way I do the 21, 31, and 77 Ltds, e.g.

Recently visited the Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge in central New Mexico along the Rio Grande. The below shots are primarily of sandhill cranes, which pass through the area on their migration routes. All taken with my K-5II and 55-300WR. More on my flickr page.

Neutral density filter - why use?

It also allows you to use a wider aperture if you are hitting the limit of your shutter speed. If you have f/1.4 selected and a 1/8000 shutter speed still overexposes your scene, an ND filter will get your shutter speed back in range.

I shoot raw 90% of the time, as was the case here. Ran them through Lightroom to "unflatten" them a bit. I try not to overdo it in my post processing--I want to keep my photos pretty true-to-life, while recognizing that a camera and an eye see things very differently.

Well this photo has been taken a million times, especially since it is the place where Forrest Gump decided to stop running. But hey, it's the first time I took it. Weather was cold, windy, and overcast. See my flickr page for more photos.

Been on a roll with my GRII lately. Took a road trip to the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley in mid-December. Shot a couple rolls through my 6x7 bodies and was happy to have the K-5II/20-40mm Ltd weather resistant combo, but the GR did the lion's share of the shooting. Dang is that lens sharp! Even with the wide angle converter and wide open, the GR walked away from the DSLR/lens combo in terms of sharpness. I love my Ltd Zoom for other reasons (flexibility, weather resistance, silent and quick focusing, style), but the GR really takes care of a lot of my photographic needs. My list of true gripes about the camera is short. My wish list for a GR III would be weather sealing, GPS (I do a lot of outdoors adventure-y shots where this would be nice), SR, and an add-on 40 or 50mm converter. Oh and a retracting EVF, triple the battery life, $150 cheaper, and no larger lol. Anyway, enough words--I know I'm preaching to the choir here anyway.

Bad idea compared to what? I hear what you're saying, and I had a fat dust spot on mine (that resolved itself thankfully), but if I can't fit the GR in a jacket or back-pants pocket it just won't come along with me most of the time. And that's the reason for the retracting design, compactness. Ideally, I'd have a GR built into my cell phone but that just isn't happening because physics. So for now I'll take a retracting design if it means I can slot it into my motorcycle jacket pocket instead of leaving it at home.

Not trying to be snarky/combative, truly...I want a "perfect" compact camera too. The GR (to me) is great because it homes in on its niche and focuses on excellence there rather than trying to be "good enough" everywhere.

Now if the GR were priced like a Leica, then yeah, I'd be screaming too!

After a hiatus on PF due to tumultuous personal events, I hope to be back and contributing a little more often. I just moved to the American southwest (Albuquerque, New Mexico), and am getting to know my new city and state. Here's a couple photos I took around downtown with my GR II (those are allowed in this thread, right?).
