K1 is pretty.... big and heavy, not that weight is what people emphasize but some do.
I look at my K1 recently and my 67II doesn't look too heavy anymore. :)

oh well.... bought Sigma 35 ART. While cleaning my 67II and GR from travel, figure I will take a photo of them.
"One camera to rule them all" is what's come to my mind. As tiny as Ricoh GR1v... Ricoh now own PENTAX that made K1000, LX, 67, 67II, 645N.

Sad if when you think of it, but glad Ricoh bring us K1. Let's hope Ricoh/PENTAX continue to make great cameras for all to enjoy. :)

Should I invest into Canon as well?

As a long time Pentax fans, I think as far as lens collection goes, you are not too heavily invest in Pentax lenses, so switching brand will not cost that much.

If you want to go mirrorless, change, Sony (FF) or Fuji (APSC / MF).
If you want to move to FF DSLR, and have specific lenses in mind that you wanna use and they don't come in K-mount, change, Canon / Nikon.

since you want 7D Mark II, it is still APSC, and just for the Speed --- I don't know, maybe buy it and try it out to see if AF is really that good?

Pentax IS NOT Dooooooomed

Ricoh/Pentax unique products are:
1. GR
2. Theta
3. Pentax 645 series.

Theta is really unique when it first came out, they got it first in a small package. However, they refresh it too slow and others are catching up, now when you hear 360 cam, seldom did you hear mention of Theta. Missed opportunity.
Pentax 645 series, while the price point is great when it first announced, now it is being undermined by mirrorless Fuji GFX (Hassy ver., probably not that much). Again, missed opportunity.
The only thing left that is really unique is GR series with strong cult following... unfortunately the GRII update is so minor. Make it WR w/ faster lens.

Also, Fuji ways of incorporating newly develop camera features via firmware update to old camera model really makes their user loyal and happy. Please learn from it.

6X7 to K T-D adapter?

Hi, can you PM me the price?
Is this you talking about: MIREX-Adapter f

I guess the problem with TS adapter of 67 lens to K mount is no wide lens selection, and 67 lens are relatively 'slow'.

This review had me thinking of getting one. Sharp at f1.8 couple with K1 will be great for starry night shots (f1.8 + high iso + LV = no more guessing framing).
and of course, a wilder lens is Irix 15mm at f2.4.

very tempting.

saw this on adorama tv and come to PF....

You Tube

Finally, hopefully .... WR!!!

you know... i wanted the Theta but image and video is behind, and no WR. Keep waiting for the next iteration.... but

I just bought Hero 5, along with all those accessories... spent more than 550 already.
.. and planning to get a gimbal.

Sigh.. timing. I honestly think Theta is one of the most unique product we have to compete with others. Put more resources in this please!

Ricoh to get out of camera business?

Camera industry is slow and protective. The old way of doing business is no longer working in this age. They need to:

- Open the software part to let people create apps that run on them. Magic lantern probably help Canon sold many more cameras.
- Connectivity to smartphone is slow and apps is terrible, need to integrate with smartphone more.
- More powerful in-camera editing/presets/apps that beat or equal with smartphone app in ease of use, and look better.
- Unified lens mount, which can be achieve with mirrorless camera and adapter.
- Better after sale services, like offering free online courses on editing photos, how to use flash, etc, create an eco-system.

IMO, Ricoh/Pentax unique products are: 645z, Theta 360, GR. continue to improve them. [Come on, at least make Theta and GR WR or waterproof.]

In digital age, not sure how products fades after they close door... I think it's not good?
I start shooting 120 and 135 film at a time where everyone think they are dead, but somehow film enjoy a reborn in recent years.

I pick up my first DSLR (or even a serious camera) in late 08, and over the years (certainly shorter than your experience) manage to kind of figure out the gear I will use and those that I will never use (like shooting wildlife or sport).

I guess is important to know what your focus is, and see if the Ricoh offering fit your bill.

The whole DSLR market is shrinking, mirrorless is rising. So if you worry about Ricoh, you should also worry about CaNikon.
On the other spectrum, the dying film is making a come back.... :D

I pick up a K1 late last year and have been happy with it (mostly the images with FA ltd lens)- albeit not happy with the new lens price and limited 3rd party offering (Sigma ART), and comparatively less 2nd hand DFA lens in the market.

That being said, finding and testing different gear is also part of the fun of photography - so go explore other brand if you have the desire. :)

Keep it fun and keep shooting!

Fujifilm GFX started with... 645z file?

After 3 yrs, I bet other electronics parts and processing must have improved to show better performance than 645z file. :)

I am happy for Fujifilm (still mad at them for discontinued the FP 100C) GFX, and hope the new Pentax 645 will beat it (pretty sure it will).

A plan for Pentax MF going forward

I follow Fuji GFX news, and you would be surprise that so many people were surprise by the dynamic range of that sensor, and they didn't know the sensor is already that great in Pentax 645Z.

why Ricoh 645Z failed to capture wave like the GFX has everyone excited?
I thought it was the advertisement budget, but no... it's the mirrorless.

There are so many MF glass that can be adapt to the GFX, even some large aperture FF glass. This is the appeal.

PENTAX 645Z next iteration can only compete with GFX if - 1. go mirrorless, or 2. go Full frame 645.
#1 should be the path going forward with WR adapter to use modern 645 lenses.
#2 is just slowing down the dying process (not dying but remain small) and going into a even smaller market segment.

Honestly, I have a plan to buy 645Z "in the future", but now I am looking forward to get GFX instead. As I look forward to use my other MF glass on the body, which is not possible with P645.

Yes, I am preparing for doing video editing as well. I also add a Samsung Evo 850 500GB for photo/video ready for processing and will be adding spinning HD for storage at a later stage.

Thanks for the input! I have a question that googling didn't help...

Can I overclock CPU and not overclock RAM?
for example even the MoBo support DDR4 at 3200 (overclock), I use the DDR4 2400 RAM, will doing this affect my CPU overclock ability?

PC build with AMD Ryzen 1800X

Hi all, this is the follow up post of my post regarding building a PC with Ryzen (building a new PC with AMD Ryzen -

Thanks for your suggestion, I ordered the following:
CPU - Ryzen 1800X
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G3
SSD - Samsung 960 EVO 256GB M.2 NVMe
CPU cooler - Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4
PC case - Phanteks Eclipse P400S PH-EC416PSTG_BK Silent Edition
Video card - EVGA GeForce GTX 1070

I need help with motherboard and RAM selection.

I have filter down to this two MoBo:
1. ASUS Prime X370-Pro AM4 AMD X370 - $160
2. ASRock X370 Taichi - $189

Initially I don't plan to do overclock but after watching this video (

You Tube

), I found that Asus have pretty good app to "automate" the overclocking process for novice like me, so I wanted to do it now (not extreme overclock though). I wanted the ASRock Taichi board, but the above video make me want to get a ASUS board for it's easy overclocking process. I tried to search similar "automated" overclocking process from ASRock, but result is not as convincing as the ASUS video show. So, what is your experience on overclocking on ASRock board? MoBo for Ryzen are basically sold out everywhere (except BIOSTAR MoBo), so I still have couple days to learn about this.:)

RAM selection:

I ordered this RAM:
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Intel Z170 Platform / Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-2400C15D-32GVR -

But now thinking if I should get the 3200 one instead (only $10 more)
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel Z170 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-32GVK -

I understand both MoBo that I have narrowed down support native 2400 and 3200 for overclock. My question is, will I make the overclock process easier if I use the DDR4 3200 RAM instead of DDR4 2400 RAM? or I should keep the DDR4 2400 RAM?

Thanks so much!

if you never shoot film yourself then is not easy to convince you of the idea. :)
b4 digital, how do people shoot film? instant film is a much faster learning tool than shooting roll film, I guess?
further, you can ask your kid to wash the car and reward them with instax film...:lol::lol:

anyway, just an idea.

Thanks! I am also plan on getting the "Phanteks ECLIPSE P400S" - how do you like it? do I need additional fan for the case? how about the
"silence edition" of this case? Yes, I am looking to up my budget a bit to get a X370 MoBo.

Items that fit AM4 search term on newegg seems to increase a lot from yesterday. I think I will wait a bit to see other options.

Any particular reason you choose that RAM? and why Ryzen 1700 and not 1700X?:)

Thanks for the advises! but Thuderbolt support?? isn't this a apple thing?

Thanks again guys!
VoiceOfReason I will swap the PSU and RAM as you suggested. Will have to look into MoBo more - right now the options for AM4 MoBo is limited.

Digitalis, do you think a 'gaming' PC generally also a good photo/video editing PC?

dafbp, graphic card is pretty much no use for LR/PS, but I heard is useful when do video editing, no?

I will also swap a M.2 2280 Samsung EVO 950 SSD, in this case I probably have to settle with 256GB one to maintain the price point. I plan to add a 512GB SSD for photo editing / catalog, and move them to regular HDD after editing. Will add them as I go along.

Thanks for the advise on CPU cooling. I thought water cooling is kind of cool so wanted to try out... but I think it might be overkill for my application, will look for Noctua one.

So, this is pretty much set:
Ryzen 1800X,
Samsung EVO 950 M2 SSD,
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
XFX Radeon RS RX 480 8GB GDDR5 Video Card (~$190)

Still deciding on:
GIGABYTE GA-AB350-Gaming (rev. 1.0) AM4 AMD B350
CPU Cooling (Noctua brand)

Did I miss anything? wifi card? case cooling fan?

Thanks guys for the input!
My budget is keep it around $1000. That's why thinking I will add graphic card and more ram later (as LR and PS don't really use graphic card).
That is also the reason I choose 1 slot 16GB, so I can add to full 64GB (16GB x 4) in future. my graphic card of choice is 8GB RX 480 in the $200 range (when deal come up). I don't play video games, so this is strictly for photo + video editing rig.

I put this list here: RYZEN 7 1800X 3.6GHz 8-Core - System Build - PCPartPicker

Most have suggest get a better PSU, so how much power is enough? I figure a 650W is good enough?

Is water cooling bad? based on what I read, Ryzen 1800X has auto overclock if cooling is right.

Casing, I am thinking of this:
(other HDs, DVD drive I will reuse or purchase when there is deal)
