Astrotracker use question

Zooming in Live view is done when pressing the OK button.

Also, do not use Bulb for this. Go to bulb, make sure Astrotracer symbol is visible in the upper left corner. Make sure you have green GPS symbol. Press exposure comp button and calibrate. Press Green button to toggle between Bulb and Astrotracer timer. Use the timer and set the time. Press the shutter with 2s delay and a cable release or infrared. Preferably in Live view so that you won't get the mirror slap. With this you will not have to stop the exposure, it will end when the timer ends. If not you have the wrong settings.

I attach my Astrotracer manual. It is in swedish but the images may help...

To use Astrotracer with just bulb was new to me but testing without any stars I see that it actually turns. I thought that the Astrotracer timer was necessary. Maybe a glitch in the FW. Is it the same on the K-3II?

Type 1. Press the little button once and you have the AF selection active. Press again and you have standard controls.

Type 2. Press the little button once and you have standard functions active. Make a selection, 2s timer for instance, or change white balance. Now it automatically reverts to AF-point selection. You will have to push the little button every time you wish to make a selection other than AF-points.

Important is to have the LCD tucked in in its home position when calibrating. Then use the LCD for setting up your shot. THEN tuck the LCD back in its homeposition again. Now shoot.

If you thought that you wanted large DOF using f/13 you really do not need that since the foreground will be blurred due to the sensor moving. Open up and let the light in so you can lower the ISO.

If you can read swedish I have a manual for this...

"Stair casing" at 100%

I also want to add that I do want to look at my images at near 100%. If I only wanted to look at the images at screen size or at 3 feet from a A3+ print I would not need the K-1, nor the K-3. It would suffice with the K10D, well the K-5 since the K10D is not as user friendly as the K-5 and newer. I love to see the small details that the high resolution camera picks up when I use a really sharp lenses. Already the K10D outresolved most of my slides and negatives taken during the 80's through the first years of the new millennia. My fathers old kodak slides are more high res. Should not have used Agfa and Fuji so much =/

Many comments say "Don't pixel peep" or "Don't look at the images at 100%"

Those comments only apply when you are using the whole sensor output. If you have to crop the image you are suddenly alot closer to the 100% problems.

If these problems will be seen on a print or not depends on the printed resolution, i.e the amount of pixels at your disposal. If cropped tight, they will show.

I check for sharpness and composition in the field. Checking for moiré or CA is impossible on the LCD, i.e the software has to be able to counter the problem.

If you press the Exposure comp button on the K-1 when in GPS/Astrotracer mode you will get to the calibration...

Also 2s self timer works in Astrotracer mode.

---------- Post added 08-18-17 at 04:41 PM ----------

One important thing when using the K-1 and the astrotracer is that when you calibrate AND shoot the LCD has to be in its home position or the compass will get confused. So Do the calibration with the LCD tucked in, compose with the LCD as you please, tuck it in again and shoot.

I have a pdf I wrote for the Swedish Pentax group but it is unfortunately in Swedish... I may translate it to english once I have the time.

Time flies and I have a new K-1 and the problem with these enoying artefacts still remain.

So, it can not only be my images that have them.

Any ideas out there?

Using DCU gives better results but the program is impossible to use so Lightroom/Camera RAW is the only alternative.

Using Live View and ES will get you less vibration than OVF and MUP.

This article is for the Nikon D810 but the theory should be applicable to the K-1

Mirror Lock Up = Live View??
Posted By Tjompen1968

So you are saying that the mirror is lowered before the shot in Live View? I think it stays up. There is no light going through the optical viewfinder during shooting in Live View.

Only difference Live View vs Mirror up would be that in Live view the shutter closes before opening for the exposure.

The DA10-17 is the only lens I have left after going FF. It works on the K-1 and stops vignetting at about 14 mm, i.e it gives you a little more FOV than on the K-3 at 10 mm.

Does it loose contact with the camera like in the video or is it just a little loose?

EDIT: Now I see your video. That looks like on mine. Not to much as long as the contact is not broken.

New DFA 70-200

Both the new tele zooms have more play than other lenses before. I have had serious problems with K-1 DFA*70-200 and DFA150-450 combos.
I now have a new K-1, a new 150-450 and, as we speak, a new 70-200 on it's way from Ricoh. They have swapped all of it... Well, the 70-200 they are swapping due to decentered lens element, not the bayonett even if it has been a problem with the older K-1...

Here is my thread on the problem I had.

I find his videos to be honest. He says what he finds. I have seens all his videos and I do not agree on everything he says but it shows how a non Pentaxian finds Pentax to be. A goldmine for Ricoh if you ask me. And if he got the result for the 70-200 that he got it is not on him, it is on the lens. My DFA*70-200 is on it's way to Japan as we speak and a new one on it's way to me thank's to this video. In the center mine is superb but after the video I started to do some more scientific tests to understand how could have gotten the results he got and found that the left side was way blurrier than the right. Mine was decentered... I had found on some images that focus was not as expected but put that on the photographer error side of the problem.
