Q for the Q & DSLR users

I have the Q and K-7. I can make equally good photographs with the Q, but it requires a lot more thought given its limitations and the pics might not be as easily appreciated by others (you don't get that instant punch in the face that small DOF and large sensor give).

Pentax Q a Failure?

The Q is excellent for what it is (but I curse its battery life). I actually find its limitations to be inspiring. The large depth of field forces you to use the whole frame, which leads to richer photographs. I love my K-7 but often the temptation is to let the gear do the interesting bits. The Q removes the shallow DOF and high IQ crutches, leaving quality to talent, which often leads to the "poor" output people like to complain about with smaller cameras.

I primarily use manual focus lenses on my K-7, and I use snap focus on my GRDII, so my requests are related to focus.

1. Snap focus. Please Ricoh, make the Q the GRD with a normal lens that people want. I know that the handling isn't the same, but it's close. User-selectable snap focus distance (like in newer GRD) would also be appreciated.

2. Focus distance meter. This should also show the depth of field range (like in the GRD).

I also support having a "screen off" option. Optical viewfinder + snap focus + screen off = bliss.

Thanks for taking the time to do this review. I was considering getting the Fuji X10 as my take-everywhere camera, but I think the Q beats it for flexibility.

Katz Eye screens for K7

I bought a focusingscreen.com K3 screen for my K-7 a couple of weeks ago. I had to remove the original copper shim and replace it with the supplied shim to get rid of front focusing. Once calibrated, the screen is a joy to use.

During the calibration, I replaced my screen at least 30 times so I can now do the deed with my eyes closed. The trick is to lightly apply pressure to the top clip with the tip of the tweezers in an upward direction when removing the screen and to lightly press the "nipple" until it snaps into the clip when installing. If you feel like you're applying too much pressure without result, STOP. You're probably applying too much pressure.

And yes, the tab is on the left side for K-7 screen.

28/3.5 Super Takumar on K-7. Beautiful lens. Wish it were faster, but c'est la vie.

Thanks for the suggestions Waldo.

I ended up removing the original copper shim (easier than I thought it would be) and using one of the supplied shims. I had previously tried using the shim to force the screen closer to the prism with no luck.

My manual focus is currently +- 1mm; nirvana! Time to get some more m42 takumars...LBA always finds a way.

focusingscreen.com screen - a short review

I've just repeated some tests with the stock screen, and it appears that it's also a bit front focused (tested using manual focus). By "a bit", I mean that if you go _just_ past what you think is perfect focus, the picture will be perfectly focused.

Is this just normal tolerance? AF adjust can fix the auto focus, but can anything be done for manual focus?

focusingscreen.com screen - a short review

I got the k3 screen for my k-7. It makes manual focus a pleasure, but after some testing on a tripod, I found that the split screen front focuses. I can compensate by going just past perfect focus, but it defeats the purpose of having a nice screen.

The focusingscreen.com website says that front focus is most likely due to installation error. I really doubt that this is true in my case because I can install the original screen back and get perfect focus. I don't really want to remove the original shim, so I'm wondering if anyone else has done manual focus testing using the k3 screen on the k-7. Anything to look out for?

Shooting manual lenses on Pentax DSLRs F--

Thanks for the great manual for manuals.

I've recently bought a Super Takumar 28/3.5 in m42 mount. The lens has a M/A switch and I'm using it with a genuine pentax adaptor on a K-7. I assumed that "A" would allow the camera to stop down the lens automatically when necessary (metering and exposure), but this doesn't seem to be the case.

In manual exposure mode, hitting the green button does not release the aperture (ie, it's always wide open). The shutter does not release the aperture either, so "A" is in essence the "wide open" setting. All the guides I've read suggest that the camera should release the aperture at least for the shutter press.

Is this the crippled K mount phenonemon (I thought it was only for metering)? I actually enjoy using "M", but having the option of using "A" would be nice.

I use my DA40 as an indoor portrait lens (if that makes sense). You might not get the whole room, but it's great for capturing expressions because people don't even realize there's a lens pointing at them (my cousin thought it was the body cap).

It's a beautiful lens and you're putting it to good use. Do you find it fast enough for a portrait lens? I got mine along with the 40 and 21 DA limiteds to make LBA quick and somewhat painless.

Also remember that not all class 6 cards are made equal. They range from 6MB/s to 45MB/s. I got the 30MB/s card because video was cutting off at about a minute and writing RAW+jpg was taking longer than I'd like. The card flushes the buffer quickly enough to allow the camera to continue shooting at 5 fps.

A few samples from the mentioned lenses.

21mm

40mm

70mm

They are all a joy to use on the K-7. The most difficult thing is choosing which one to mount.

Hey guys,

If you use the K-7 and have tried working with raw in linux, you might have noticed that you get a black band on the right side of the picture.

This is a known problem with dcraw. It will be fixed in the next version.

Congrats on your lens. It looks like it documented the battle of Stalingrad!

I hope that using the lens will change your mind about keeping it mostly for display. It's probably my favourite lens for people shots.

Talking of DOF...

That does sound like a nice feature. Some digital DSLRs have it in the form of "auto depth of field". The camera calculates the necessary aperture to get two objects in focus. I think the two objects are automagically chosen by the camera using the focus points. That's how it worked on my Canon 350D (I never used the feature so I might have some details wrong).

I haven't tried taking the lens off yet because I'm still waiting for the fake genuine adaptor and lens/body caps. If the adaptor is wobbly, I'll try to order the real fake one before I fly off next week.

It's a Helios 44-2 (bottom left on above picture). I'll be sure to heed Georg's advice when taking it off. Thanks. As for taping the lens to the camera, I don't mind looking ghetto but this K-7 is barely a week old. I'd like to preserve its diginity for a while longer :)

"The most lenses require an adaptor" statement is just me writing before thinking.

Why do men who have smoking hot wives sleep with ugly hookers (eg, Hugh Grant)? The answer to these questions is the cure for LBA.
