Here in the UK I have seen LOADS of adverts lately, in shops, a-boards and displays outside shops, online retailers really pushing pentax and loads of big posters and magazine adverts, cant believe it really!

I think HOYA has done a good job lately and long may it continue:lol:

What about the K-5 body makes it "worth" 2x the price of the K-r KIT?

the k-5 is metal, sealed and has more pixels, more stuff such as horizon correction etc. if you want the cut down k-5 (kr) buy that, if you want the real deal get that...i see it as pentax giving us the choice, and also underpricing it's entry level offerings to get a foothold....it's certainly not sinister as all the carping would lead us to believe.......bored now....

I take your point and respect it, i was just trying to point out that a sweeping comment does not make the comment a truth. another post mentioned the available light and hats true too. But i still feel that the current trend is perceived more than practised, and that low iso (if right for the conditions) is still the quickest way to attain the best IQ. marketing is marketing and physics is physics

low iso is the first thing i look at on any day, never mind these days, who shoots a landscape, studio portrait or product/food shot at iso 1600?

iso 80 -200 is still the most important range, and contrast, rendition, specularity, diffraction, DR and dimensionality will always be more important than iso 6400 noise

I do and sell a lot of food photography (trusty old k10 in studio with iso 100 equals heaven for food shots) and I can tell you tha the plastic look of the fruit is from a solution of water, glucose and arrowroot used to make the fruit super shiny....look at the weave of the cloth to get a true sense of the texture of the image..verrrrrrrrry nice

Hi there,

with all the negative press about Pentax being suddenly expensive here are some net prices I have found from a very reputable UK stock dealer

kx 349 body only
kr 550 with 18-55
k7 699 body only
k5 1040 body only

these last two are still pre release price so I expect to see 999 k5 before christmas.

Seems pretty good to me, why all the long faces?

for everyone who moans and is pointlessly negative.

It is obviously incredibly easy to set up, operate and market a successful camera and electronics company in the current climate. Please feel free to have a go yourselves, instead of whinging like a bunch of spoilt petulant children.

The camera may or may not be trying to make a grey tone, that i cannot answer, but it sure as hell knows what a grey tone is, and can therefore make an accurate calibration against it, hence the standard for WB measurement is still an 18% kodak grey card. Also making a sub sampled array of your calculated data looked up in a vector database sounds quite hard work, compared to holding a piece of grey cardboard up in front of a camera for a few seconds.

Most of this discussion has been about shooting JPEG, so setting your white balance is doubly important in this case as JPEG's can be a pig to WB after the fact.

Well to white balance you can meter (measure) off any mid tone.. (although it's not ideal, i did mean if you were in a fix and there was no mid grey to measure off)

And white balance is still very important in RAW as getting it right in camera means less post processing and in mixed (incandescent and tungsten or flash/sunlight mixed together) lighting conditions it is pretty much the the only way to get it spot on, doing it after is very difficult to avoid casts in these situatons...also changing white balance radically in RAW if you have shot at a medium ISO or higher can result in more noise and dynamic range reduction in some situations...so it is still better to meter from a 18% kodak grey card in situ and get it right from the start

Oh for gods sake everyone! Do the decent thing and take a white balance reading for anything remotely important. There are thousands of cheap white balance calibration tools on the market, or just measure off some grass or other mid tone in situ. No photographer worth his/her salt lets the camera make these decisions for them, so get used to treating a pro specced camera in a professional way,

sorry, rant over

Star Trail Software?

I think i know what you want to do, but as we are constantly moving relative to the stars, i don't think it is possible to take multiple exposures that match up perfectly unless your tripod or telescope has some sort of tracking device...or do you mean many short exposures that are stacked in photoshop or similar? I have done a few star shots and the longest time i have got before a star seems to deviate from a perfect dot of light is about 20 seconds....so i suppose with a camera at high iso, with good noise reduction that does not obliterate detail (mmm) with a fast lens wide open (dodgy, could result in soft image) might be able to take 80 or so .25 sec images and then stack em up in software....i'd go for a tracker, i'm saving for one right now!

good luck tho

I think the 16-50 bundled is asking a bit much! and in the long run, buy a few stabilised lenses and then reconsider the concept of value for money

Thoughts on the NEW K-X

I agree entirely,

I am a photographer who does quite a lot of paid work, uses digi and film, medium format, scans, prints, cyanotypes...lots of tech stuff and NEVER use anything but the central AF point, as I just compose, lock, recompose, shoot...it's second nature and I find quicker than messing about with AF point selections...thats if the AF is switched on of course....
