Pentax 540 Flash Easy question

I just purchased a used flash. One question. The head does not seem to lock. It moves whether or not I press the button. Is this normal? Is it worth returning or fixing?

Using the histogram on K5

Thanks for the responses. The Nikonians article was most helpful because they matched the pictures with the sample histogram. I'll have to try it for a while and see the light vs. dark sides of the graph.

Using the histogram on K5

I just purchased a K5 and played with the histogram. How is it used? To me it's just a bunch of graph like lines. I find the red over exposed indicator and the yellow under exposed indicator more useful. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't find any "edit" link for my marketplace listing. The only choices I found were "sold" or "withdrawn." How does one modify an existing listing. I want to remove and re post some poor pictures of the items. Any help would be appreciated.

Sticky: Camera Bag Reviews

I highly recommend the Slinger Bag. It's large enough to hold my K1000 with SMC-A 35-105, Vivitar Series1 70-210, SMC-A 50mm 1.4, SMC-A 28mm 2.8, Large Flash.

This bag is small enough to not be unwieldy, yet holds the essentials. There are two exterior web pockets for water bottles. It can also be used as a backpack or shoulder bag.

It's reasonably priced at about $49 depending on color. I also found out that it is about $10 cheaper in the store, than online.

Picture taking etiquette for People

I'd like to begin to take some candid on the street photographs, but was wondering what the proper etiquette is for taking someone's picture.

For example, I was in NYC the other day. I saw a veteran sitting on the street looking for money and displaying his prosthetic leg in front of him as a collection vessel. My instinct was to donate some money and ask his permission to take his picture, but I felt like I might be exploiting his situation.

Do most people take "stealth" photos with a large telephoto lens and not let the subject know that their picture is being taken? I see interesting people, yet don't know if they want to be photographed.

I saw another interesting thing in NYC the other day. A guy was driving a convertible with the top down and standing in traffic. He had a very creepy looking doll in the passenger seat. Unfortunately, I could not get to the proper angle to take the photo before he left. In this case, I could have just used the telephoto from across the street.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Nice reading the old ads. I guess these prices equate to the K5 in 2011 dollars. Considering the advanced technology in modern DSLR's, the current prices would be a bargain compared to the Spotmatic. Also the fact that with a DSLR you don't have to pay for film or processing and get instant picture results.

I still like using my K1000. It is a lot more work with manual focusing, exposure, film loading, etc. Last week I took a boat ride in NYC and was juggling all the manual features while trying to take a photo as the boat was moving up and down. It was a challenge. Surprisingly, all the pictures came out nice except one that blurred. I guess the old school cameras still have some life left in them. BTW, I'm not anti DSLR, but I'm saving up for a K5 or it's replacement. This way I can use the lenses with it.

Problem with SMC-A 70-210 f4

I am now debating if i should just return it. (I have the seven days on ebay). I saw an excellent condition one at KEH for $99. I paid $62, but it may need $70 worth of repairs.

On the other hand, if it is repaired it will most likely last years. There is no telling how long a used one from KEH would last.

I just purchased a 70-210 F4. Pentax SMC-A lens on Ebay. The zoom makes a slight scraping noise. Also, the rubber focus grip seems to move independently of the underlying metal ring. For example, you focus to the end, then you can keep turning the grip. (especially in the macro mode).

Is the rubber vs. metal grip movement normal for this lens? If so, I can live with the scraping noise.

I have seven days to return it.

I have also sent an email to Eric for a price estimate to CLA the lens and check it out.

I would appreciate any feedback from owners of this lens

How would I find out the flash trigger voltage? I wouldn't want to damage an expensive DSLR.

Thanks for the explanation. I have a Promaster Flash I use with my K1000 that works with the built in auto sensor. This would probably work with a newer camera in the manual mode.

Welcome. Good camera choice. I recently acquired a K1000 and K1000 SE. I had my K1000 SE CLA'd and seals replaced. Me K1000 is now down with Eric for the maintenance. (it also needs a prism). I took my first two rolls at the Philly zoo. I'm very impressed with the results and the simplicity of the camera. I used a Vivitar Series 1 2.8-3.8 for the zoo shots.

I Use A K1000

Amen! I just purchased K1000 and K1000 SE bodies to get back into the manual thing. It is somewhat refreshing to focus and expose the shot by myself. I had at one time a full Nikon D100 system. I sold everything a few years back to pay for my patio. I'm now deciding if I eventually want to stay with Pentax or go to Nikon or Canon if I go back to digital. So far I like the Nikon D7000 and the Pentax D5 or D7. I'm not crazy about the Canon 60D, but the 7D is too pricey.

Strange light readings with prime vs zoom
Posted By njpentax

I am assuming that the zoom lenses are giving the correct readings to the camera's meter based on the fact that the camera gets the actual light through the lens. The readings must be affected by the lens itself.

I tried the Pentax 35-105, a Tamron 60-300, and Vivitar Series 1 70-210 and had about the same readings at 3.5 aperture. The two primes seemed to have the same readings (different than the zooms). I guess I'm going to take the camera's word for the readings.

Strange light readings with prime vs zoom

That would explain it. I tried another zoom on the camera and obtained similar readings to the Pentax zoom. If this is the case, would that mean that a Gossen light meter would be relatively useless for a zoom or telephoto lens?

I have a question. I was just using my Gossen Luna Pro light meter and checking exposures against what the K1000 camera says I need. When I use a 50mm 1.4 or 28mm 2.8 lens, the readings are very close to the meter. When I use the 35-105 zoom, the camera says I have more light than the other lenses and meter and recommends a higher aperture. Do you know if the zoom somehow affects the light readings compared to a prime lens?

Using TTL Flash with old lenses

Thanks for the responses. I guess I will be eliminating my non-a lenses. I've started accumulating various lenses that are duplicates. I'd like to have a collection of A type so I don't have to fool with the stop down and manual exposure as well as the flash issues.

I'm curious about using old Pentax manual and/or A type lenses on a KR or K7/5. If I have the camera set to manual, does the flash still control itself automatically, or do I have to use the flash like it was an old auto flash on a manual camera?

Situation 2. If I have an A series lens, does everything work normally.

I am trying to weigh my options before pulling the trigger on a DSLR. I'm now a happy K1000 owner with a lot of manual and/or A type lenses.

I'm a retro grouch. I've eliminated all my Nikon Digital equipment and just went full manual with a K1000. I've decided that I'm going to use this system to rediscover my joy of manual photography.

In high school I had a darkroom and used a Yashica manual camera, then an olympus OM1N, then OM2N, then Canon A1, then went Nikon D1000 digital. Sold all the Nikon equipment to build a patio and was using point and shoot Fuji and Canon cameras.

I just decided that I wanted to use the manual system. I've accumulated some used lenses, flashes, etc. My prize find was a Komine Vivitar Series1 70-210 2.8-3.8 (unfortunately the pre AE model). I just found a tamron SP 60-300 adaptall. My other find was the Pentax 35-105mm f. 3.5.

I also found a mint brown K1000 SE on ebay. It's now getting new seals and a cleaning.

I hope to see how the transition to digital goes. Some day I might want to try my lenses with a K5 or K7 body.

BTW, how do the old M type lenses work with the K5 or K7?
