Regarding the Limited refreshes, I noticed that the 43mm now has the green finger point made of shippoyaki. This brings it in line with the 77mm and the 31mm.

When I saw a presentation about the design of the lenses in Nov 2019, Ikenaga-san mentioned that this was left out of the 43mm for cost concerns. At that time there was a lot of scepticism in the company about whether the Limited series was viable at all, so they had to make cost-related compromises with the 43mm. It sold well and they were able to do what they wanted with the 77mm and 31mm. Its nice to see this small aspect of the design perfected 20 years later.

I guess that Ikenaga-San and Iwasaki-San might discuss this history in their session tomorrow evening.

Decoding camera industry trends

Although most of these trends are "true," they over-estimate the role of average consumer behavior in determining the business models of niche product makers. Average consumers have never been interested in high-resolution, Ansel Adams photography. The smartphone social media snapshot is but a continuation of the point-n-shoot 4x6, Polariod, Disc camera, Instamatic, pocket 110, box-brownie, etc. that dates back to the dawn of consumer photography.

Trends in the upper-end of the market run counter to many of these mass-market trends:

1. 8k video is now the bar for high-end video. That presages the adoption of 8k monitors and TVs that require 32 MPix cameras or better.

2. More people are using software and accessories to make very large tiled panoramas. These stunning images can be viewed online using easy-to-navigate zoom-and-pan interfaces.

3. The slowly growing world of VR and AR will also depend on (and benefit from) extremely-high resolution imagery -- being able to see at 4k resolution no matter which way one looks.

4. Camera makers continue to release ever-higher megapixel cameras in a range of formats. 100 Mpix cameras exist or are coming in all formats. There's even a 108 MPix smartphone sensor.

5. The biggest change is that the internet brings niche users together around niche technologies such as high-performance photography, film photography, astro photography, retro/vintage photography, specific "rare" brands such as Pentax, etc. At the same time that the internet is blasting out low-res, social media smartphone snapshots, it's also creating communities around less popular technologies. Those communities (e.g., PentaxForums!) make it much easier for novices to learn about niche products and make it much easier for niche product makers to reach niche customers. The internet reduces the critical mass required for a viable product market.

The global middle class is currently approaching 4 billion consumers. Even if a big consumer trend drives adoption of one approach to photography to 99%, the market in the remaining niche of 1-in-a-hundred people is a total of 40 million potential customers. What the 99% want does not have to limit what the 1% can expect to get.

K3III Delayed... indefinitely

You must have missed the part about me buying the K100, K200, K-5, and K-5ii. I wouldn't say that qualifies as "always be not buying." But yes, I think everybody on the forum waits on something better, and only buys when they find something significantly enough better for their needs to justify the cost (or maybe because they lost/broke whatever they had had before.) It seems like a very easy-to-understand thought process to me.

I've posted other images of this beautiful old tree on this thread, and commented before that it has died probably because of repeated defoliation by gypsy moths. I'm very sad to see it go.

The moon detail with Gassendi, Copernicus and Erastothenes craters (most impressive craters - left to right), Montes Riphaeus, Montes Carpatus and Montes Apeninus.
This was made with Bresser-Messier Ar 102 - 102/1000 refractor (1000 mm FL, f 9.8, ISO 400, 1/200 s, 6 frames, only, stacked in Sequator). It seems this is very good match as these are just baby steps with much room for improvement. Moreover both telescope and my Q are white:)

Crossposted to "Let's share..." thread.

They've just posted it here:

You Tube

Update: I don't have time to write anything detailed now, but here are things you might want to know.

11:46 AF points coverage.

12:11 OVF Face, Eye and Bird detection is coming!
Combination of the new 307 thousand dots RGVIr metering sensor data and PRIME V means that they can detect motion, color distribution and shape, and they use this for image recognition. Mr. Wakashiro specifically said "things like face, eye and bird".
New algorithm for prediction of moving object position means better tracking even if the velocity toward the camera changes irregularly.

16:00 High ISO, better color rendition than K-1 II!
Examples shown are at ISO 102400 and 204800 and it's not like you want to use that kind of ISO, but anyway, K-3 III is clearly better as far as color is concerned.
