Sunset Ride - the good and bad of the Pentax K-7

Oh no arguement here... I should have been more clear and made sure I wasn't sounding like I was comparing systems. I was just making a point that some cameras really do live up to their very high ISO performance.

The part about my K10 ( and the other 2 I've tested / tried out ) was simply a form of declaring anguish I guess ; not really wanting to fully admit I may have to switch systems. Pentax has always been great for me, but the last few months I'm discovering limiting weaknessess that, at one point, weren't really an issue.

my apologies ;)

IDK about this statement, JMR. Go here and check out the Nature forum. Most are shot w/ the 5d and 5d III from Cannon and a lot of D700 and D300's ( have yet to see any Pentax exif data on this site ) and a very high amount are shot at well over 1600 ISO. I will tell you this for sure: same conditions and an equivalent lens, there is no way my K10D can do what these cameras can in terms of high ISO performance.

Even on a great exposure, the noise @ 400+ ISO on my K10D is simply unbearable and many times while shooting wildlife early in the A.M. I've cursed myself for staying w/ Pentax after switching to digital. I sell alot of landscape and wildlife prints and I wouldn't dare risk my budding reputation by selling images with noise in them. I've come to this conclusion : if I have to go over 200 ISO I don't even bother trying to get the shot... that's pretty sad I think. I've tested K20's and K-7's in the same conditions and gotten very similar results. Pretty much why I haven't upgraded :(

Thievery... right up there with child molestation and wife beating in my books: the work of cowards.

Really sorry to hear this, man. It's a shame some people feel they have to wreck other people's lives in order to enhance their own. Be nice if they got nailed for it...

Yes, the only thing that really matters... Nobody was hurt.

Jimbo says:
The fall must be unbelievable

I was thinking the same. I really like the pond ones, MRRiley. Looks like a very calm and peacful area to spend the day. #1 is a favourite for me as well, but maybe that's because in Saint John it's always foggy. We get surprised by the sun when it's out after around 8am :p Great work.

I do a lot of panorama's, they are great fun aren't they? I too, saw Gary's post and was hoping to get out and try some today. Didn't happen...

Jim, these are stunning. I have really enjoyed your last few series from this area and these really add to and compliment what you've shown us so far. #3 is absolutely gorgeous!! Keep these coming, Jim ; I'm quite sure you had as much fun taking as I have looking ;)

oh... my... heavens, Jimbo. I almost want to contact you about buying a 16 x 20 of #1. Probably one of the best shots I've seen on here this year so far. Absolutely love the conversion, Jim. 5 out of 5.

dcmsox2004 really enjoyed the first two... welcome back to the post!

Thank you sir, I am happy I was able to get some time here instead of the brief browsing I'm able to get in at work ;)

#3 is my favourite

Perfect Bird shot

May I know, which lens is it that you use?

Thank you for the kind words! I actually baited this guy with peanuts and when they were all gone, he came back and was looking around for some. I have a few more pretty funny ones of him cranking his neck to scope the area.. I'll try to add them to this post before bedtime.
The lens I used for that shot was the DA 50-200mm.

Hey all,

I haven't really posted much of anything over the last 2 months or so. Part of that is due to my free time being eaten up by photo shoots ( gee darn ) and, as of late, by me fooling around w/ the new 360 flash I acquired lately.

Here's some recent ones that have been pretty popular and have sold well. Thanks for looking and any C&C is always appreciated.

K10d • ISO 200 • F6.7 • 1/90s @ 160mm

K10d • ISO 200 • F2.4 • 1/180s @ 55mm

K10d • ISO 200 • F5.6 • 1/125s @ 200mm

K10d • ISO 100 • F22 • 10seconds @ 18mm

K10d • ISO 200 • F6.7 • 1/750s @ 200mm

This does look good but, personally, anytime you combine 2 or more different images / add an element that was not there where the shot was taken / or HDR it becomes art and the 'photography' part ends right there.

example :: Local guy in town does only HDR ( even his portrait work )... he wonders why he can never sell any images / get very many photoshoots. I told him it's simply because he's a photoshopper, not a photographer and people will not pay money for something they can do themselves.

just my two cents - but I'm a purist so that rules me out :) lol

$200 for untouched shots??

If it were me... I'd demand my money back, plain and simple. Dropping $200 for SOC images and ONE free 8 X 10 print is a pure rip off.

So I got the M42 I needed to start using this wonderful lens and it has been the only lens on the camera since. I am nowhere near the level I would like to be yet, in terms of composition and that super sharp focus but with some practice I'm hoping to get there.

I don't know if any of you have seen / voted but a few of these are up on the PPG 'hopefuls' block. I would love some real feedback, especially from you brilliant DOF shooters that I know are here. All shot handheld and 55mm @ F2.
Enjoy, thanks for looking and thank you for any C&C offered.

K10d 1/20s ISO 100

K10d 1/8s ISO 400 ( I know, I know :P )

I noticed that down this way too, Jim. From what I've read, so far, it appears Mallards are a 'mate for life' species. Apparently, the Canada Goose is too.

If I have never commented on any of your work before, ascii, then you owe me a slap or two ;) Man, those are beautiful. I take flower pictures for practicing DOF, but I've never had a real interest in flower shots until about..oh... 30 seconds ago.

Definitely will be keeping my eyes open for more from you. Gorgeous.

Do you grow?

I'll play... ;)

I dabbled in imagery for years with my former gaming team and the band. I would design all the web stuff, Tshirts, posters, promo crap but it wasn't until I got into astronomy that I started taking a serious interest in photography. I started off with my dad's old Ashai SP1000 taking simple night scapes / star shots. When I upgraded to the K10d, one day, a door just opened in my head and here I am.

So, have I grown? Definitely. I look back at the first couple 1000 shots off the K10d and go 'ewww! why did I think that was a good shot?' lol.

Growth for me has come in the form of less guessing for exposure settings and more getting the shots on the first take - which is a good feeling. I did, however, literally cram my head with as much info as I could in the last couple of years and make myself shoot manual only once I got the K10d. I don't think I've grown much in the form of 'creativity' when it comes to portraits but that's why the wife is my spotter - she has an amazing eye for what makes for good poses.

My customers have all been happy and I've sold quite a few landscape / wildlife prints which also makes me happy, not because of the money, but because people are enjoying my work.
