The Journey from 'Chimping'

Iíve never sent my film to be processed by someone else. Itís simple enough to do at home, B&W or C-41. If someone decides that the process to develop film by either mailing it off, or doing it themselves is too much effort... well, they certainly wouldnít be alone in the thought. Digital is the standard for many good reasons.

Assuming here that you’re unwilling to use the hacked K-50 firmware? It does sound like Ricoh couldn’t make a better 50mm lens for your needs anyway, right?

I have pretty minority tastes in that I want an AW lens with an aperture ring so I can use the same lens for digital and film, which is eiher impossible or so niche an interest that it might as well be. A lens has to be particularly special for me to give up the aperture ring.

I’ve been itching for the D FA 24-70, but then I couldn’t use it on film, and the reviews are decent (but not superb), and it sounds like the weathersealing is not necessarily up to D FA* standards. So, I’ve just been using what I’ve got (fairly sucessfully). I do often wish my 70-200 D FA* and LX could meet, even if it was stuck wide open.

[Printing] Setting up a color darkroom?

This has been some really wonderful input, thanks y'all. Craigslist near me is pretty scarce on enlargers, and almost all of the ones on eBay are 'local (i.e. very far away) pick-up only'.

Combining that with wanting an enlarger that can accept up to 4x5 film is tricky, plus color support.

I would throw in another vote for the DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135. I shot professionally with them and the K-30, so they’re definitely capable. AF is important, but learning how to use AF is more important (using back-button focus and shooting birds is a good way to practice so you don’t feel cheated when you go to a game and haven’t practiced enough to get ‘the shot’).

[Printing] Setting up a color darkroom?

Has anyone had experience printing with color? I mostly shoot color film, and wasnít particularly impressed with the digital workflow options Iíve worked with in the past. I develop my own C-41 with zero issues, but Iíve never used an enlarger.

Iíve gathered that I'll need an enlarger with a dichronic head (and a good bulb), lens, darkroom timer, tongs and trays, negative tray, easel, grain finder, contact printing frame, paper, chemistry.

Did I miss anything? How much can a beginner's kit expect to cost used?

Honestly, it seems like a lot going on, so I see why the only darkroom even remotely within traveling distance is purely B&W.

77m Filters, they ok?

Main issues should include that step-up rings can sometimes get stuck (I avoid this by using magnetic Xume filter rings). A bigger problem for the K-1 landscaper is that you’ll get vignetting on the 24-70 because its filter thread is 82mm, and that the 15-30 requires a non threaded filter system. 77mm filters are an expensive way to go if you’re not working with APS-C or primes.

I’ll try it again when I get home. It was in the 70s yesterday so it should be fine, and I warmed it up in my hand when it gave me issues.

Just one 1 1/2 inch (Iím pretty sure of the length) spacer ring is enough. Then I step it up to a 77mm step-up ring, then my filter. Works fine.

If you just want filter flexibility, I picked up a 'spacer ring' and then step up from that.

PZ-1p Battery Issue?
Posted By lithedreamer

Iíve run a couple of batteries through my PZ-1p. When I press the shutter, it makes a whirring sound and indicates a low battery, even with a new battery. If I powercycle it, I can change as many menu settings or exposure settings or even rewind the film in the camera without issue. Any ideas? Is my poor camera dead? Iíve been bit by this on two occasions (the first I believed the battery was just dead), so I'll definitely be using a test shot in the future.

I have an AC Adapter for my K-1 and will probably use that the next time I update (out of an abundance of caution). That said, I’ve updated my K-x, my K-30, and my K-1 without issue ever.

There is a review about the WR being bad in its place in the lens database. That worries me, considering the places I take my lenses. Not having IF probably doesn’t help. That combined with the filter size that breaks the rest of my system (not being 77mm), lack of corner sharpness, and not having a Pentax 'feel' to the images, all leaves me without one.

It’s really frustrating though because the 28-105 and I often don’t 'click' like the rest of my lenses do. It leaves me just shooting less in that range, while I happily tote my 70-200 DA* around.

Hey all,

Getting back into photography with an LX, beautiful camera by the way. Is there any way to shoot a lens (like the 100mm Macro WR) wide open on this camera? Is my best bet to get a reversal ring and hold the aperture open by hand?

We ended up agreeing on a high-pass filter + making the eyes pop more with some selective adjustments, we're both really happy with the result:

Hey all, long time no see (sorry, life has been... busy).

Photo in question: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

I shot with a model on Saturday, and she wasn't happy with the size of her pores on her cheeks in the photos. I've tried frequency separation (I end up smudging so much it looks just like the 'beauty filter' photo she sent me), and an inverted high-pass filter (I'm not sure it does enough), and the healing brush tool (which just makes her cheeks look weird).

I've scoured my postprocessing books, skimmed Amazon's options, looked on YouTube and Lynda, and I haven't found an answer three days in to this endeavour, help? I want to share about half a dozen of these shots, so I really need to learn how to do this.

Do you only use ND filters? I don't see how those could replace circular polarisers or IR filters.

This is a common stereotype that I think is actually quite unfair. Many frivolous lawsuits (like the stories about someone trying to sue the devil) are stopped by a judge at filing or summary judgement. Other so-called 'frivolous' lawsuits actually had merit, like the woman who was burned by scalding McDonald's coffee (if you don't know the full story, I strongly recommend looking it up). McDonald's no longer makes coffee that can give people 3rd degree burns. Medical malpractice suits changed the number of people who die from anesthesia from a 'tragic, but unpreventable' 1/6000 each year, to 1/200,000 each year, because juries insisted on giving the families financial recompense.

It's not stupid, and no consumer is suing a tripod manufacturer because their camera fell over and broke. It doesn't make sense to go to court for that (outside of small claims, if the company was really negligent).
