DA12-24 on Full Frame

I have a 12-24 and is a very nice lens on a crop sensor. I have the K-3 ( and other crop bodies) and K-1ii and have used the 12-24 on both crop and Ďfull frameí. While you get full frame coverage on the K-1ii from 18-24 it is really only useful from 20-24 if you want to preserve decent edge sharpness. I rarely use that combination since I own the DFA 15-30 2.8 which is of course excellent.

Nice photos. You got it; go low and go close for the fisheyes. I have both the 10-17 and the 17-28. Both are nice but the 10-17 is much closer focusing.

What autofocus film camera to get?

You should probably stick to the PZ-1p, PZ-1 or MZ-S for build quality and modern features. I shoot all of my new lenses on a PZ-1p. They work well.

Iíve seen the add a few times on TV and found it funny 😄. The woman whoís child is Ďbokehedí is priceless. That feature of my Apple phone XR max is neat and I use it often. At the very least, it makes one realize the aesthetics of aperture choice and that it is really an artistic choice.

T Adapter for telescope

Yes it is best to get a 2Ē K-mount adapter since it will be more versatile later if you go to full frame sensor. Hereís one:

Pentax K SLR / DSLR 2" UltraWide True-2 Prime Focus Adapter - Telescope Camera Adapters | TelescopeAdapters.com

For prime focus without diagonal you probably will need a 2Ē extension. Hard to know until you try. See here:

While I have switched to neoprene cases for my digital cameras I try to find leather for my film cameras. I still shoot the ME, Zx5n and Pz-1p. They are beautiful and practical. Yours worked out nicely!

Very nice. I had several of those cases years ago and still have one enshrouding my ZX-5n. Working the leather is cathartic in a way. Shame you donít have before picture 😊

Sigma 50-500 non OS compared to Pentax 150-450 on K-1

Nice comparison. The 150-450 photo is sharper and has much higher contrast wide open. The contrast issue is often more important for telephoto applications. Wide open is also a good choice since we are often forced to shoot wide open in real life situations. Thanks for posting:-)

Lenses getting heavier?

Yes thatís really interesting. There is also a sharp transition in the Pentax trend line. Might be linked to full frame lenses.

Yep. We have the choice of small!

Ran across this article which argues that lenses may be heavier than ever after getting lighter in the 2000s. Canon Nikon and Pentax are all individually featured.

Not Long Ago, Lenses Were Much Lighter - Photography Life

Lots of data and some interesting conclusions.

SMC DA 40mm Limited on the K-1 (at close range)

Thanks. My experience is similar with this lens. The thing about the excellent PF article on compatibility I found baffling was the comparison between the DA 70 and DA 40. I think the DA 40 is almost useable but the DA 70 much less so. The article suggested that the DA 70 performed better. Thanks for posting.

As HarrisF stated the AF switch on the left overides other settings. Toggle it between AF and MF a few times and then set on AF. If it still doesnít AF look for other causes such as contacts.

Do other DC motor lenses work? May be a problem with the lens or contacts on lens or body. You could try cleaning the contacts carefully with alcohol.

Eyesite affects manual focus

Your best bet is to focus on the screen itself using the diopter adjustment. This is best done on a bright evenly illuminated field like a cloudy sky. You can adjust the diopter to focus the lines on the screen or the granularity on the focus screen itself. Focusing the diopter will only improve your ability to see the screen in focus. It will help in manual focus but will not change or influence what the autofocus sensors see. Good luck!

How do you protect yours?

I think itís situational. I often use a high quality protective filter or circular polarizer if there is a lot of dust or ocean spray. Indoors I rarely use them. I second the suggestion to use the lens caps and hood. As to leaving in a bag, I hope the OP will use the camera every day!

DA 40mm "tiny" screw-in cap.

I guess I am the oddball here. I really like the screw on cap!1 When shooting I just use the hood so I donít frequently take it off and on. I put a filter on the inside of the hood if there will be sand, debris blowing or ocean spray.

Bought one of these for my son. OP specified DA 40. Hard to tell which he needed; both are available

For a beginner, is the price premium of 16-85 lens over the 18-135 worth paying for
Posted By Pentax Syntax

Here are a few things to consider.

1. I kept the 16-85 and sold the 18-135 I had previously.
2. The 16 mm vs 18 mm makes a big difference on APC cameras.
3. If you noticed substantial difference between the kit lens and the primes you had you will also appreciate the edge performance of the 16-85. Not a huge improvement over the 18-135 but itís there.
4. Shooting wide is hard. It gets increasingly hard to maintain composition the wider you go. The old maxim about filling the frame with your target is still worth remembering. If you are interested in learning about wide angle photography the 16-85 would be a great start.

Both are great lenses so you canít go wrong.

K-3 menu won't stay on when lens attached

I have used tubing alcohol on a Q-tip for the body and lens contacts. Work slowly to prevent anything touching the mirror or optics. Some people use a rubber eraser but itís risky as the rubber fragments can get into the mirror box or onto optical surfaces. Look for any wear on the contacts as you work through. Let us know if that corrects your problem. By the way does the menu disappearance happen with other lenses?

I would try a reset to factory settings since it was purchased used (tools...#3 bottom) and a cleaning of lens and camera contacts.

Try some high contrast landscapes shot in RAW or RAW+ on a tripod. The amount of shadow detail you can recover is amazing with either the K-1 or K-1ii. The RAW files are very data rich.

Try pixel shift on a tripod with one of the better prime lenses. Once again, the amount of detail is impressive.

Tripod - Astralphotography

The basic truth about astrophotography mounts is you can never have too much stability. Your 450 mm Soligar lens (fixed f8 I think) lens your are going to need a equatorial mount to get exposures of any length for stacking. These mounts usually come with a stable tripod or pier so you will get the stability you seek. They are, however, not cheap. What kind of astrophotography are you interested in? Moon shots with long lenses can work with a stable tripod but deep sky objects require much more.
