Thanks Weevil. The Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks that were swarming on Amherst Island (near Kingston) a few weeks ago had mostly cleared out by the time we got there, so this was a nice consolation prize.

Northern Shrikes are songbirds that behave like hawks. They are not very common around here, and when you do see them they are usually hunting from an elevated perch, very hard to get close to. This is a major crop.

Well done Des - very nice shots. I've been holding back as you can only post so many snow and ice beach shots, but spring is coming, slowly!

Animal calls for wildlife?

I've seen it described more as a scold or alarm call that birds might make when there is a threat, for example small birds sometimes gang together to mob or chase after crows or owls. It's just sort of a "pishwishwish" sound, sometimes with the odd squeak against the back of your hand. Not something you would do in the presence of non-birders!

Believe it or not there really is a popular beach (in summer) under all of that.

Birders have been "pishing" birds like sparrows and warblers to get them to pop up out of the vegetation for a long time, but more here in North America than where I first birded in UK. I have used the Peterson "Birding by Ear" recordings on my iPod from time to time, and now the calls in the Sibley app. Best to avoid where there's a higher density of birders and/or where the birds would be stressed. It's not permitted in some parks and other protected areas.

That occurred to me but if that was the case maybe it would point out over the water, or be directed upwards for aircraft. I thought it might have something to do with the shoreline/dune vegetation being protected.

Thanks Eddie - that's a substantial commute you have. I ride through there in the summer as well.
I went to the cemetery to find something for the "shadows" weekly challenge. I noticed for the first time when I opened the image of the spiral monument that there is a hand emerging from the stone, holding the inscription scroll. Very creepy.

They are more established in northern Ontario but most of the wetlands where the grebes might have nested along the Toronto shoreline were destroyed by lakefilling over the years - they had a lot more habitat available before we came along than they do now. There have been more of them breeding on the Canadian side of western Lake Ontario recently, mostly using constructed harbours and marinas etc. Samuel Smith Park was was mostly built from construction rubble, with big limestone blocks forming the breakwaters. The grebes like to hang out in an enclosed bay with a marina that's frozen right now. There are some shallow areas where they don't need help to nest, but I suppose a few artificial aids won't go amiss.

Probably the same Snowy Owl as the one I posted a week or two ago. I think the wire frame embedded in the ice is a nesting structure for Red - necked Grebes..

Mode dial problem on K-3
Posted By jacamar

I have taken my 3 1/2 year-old K-3 in for repair because the mode dial is malfunctioning. I get the user and flash modes but for all of the others (Tv etc.) I just get "Manual" mode. I'm waiting for a repair estimate. I'm not aware of others having this problem, but I guess it's just one of those "wear and tear" things that you get with an older (and well-used) camera. Another reason to hope for a K-3 successor in the not-too-distant future.
