I admit to having thought that the 3 part body of the DFA21 could easily be adapted for wider optics. A D-FA14mm f/2.4 wouldn't be much of a stretch although the hood component of the lens barrel would need to undergo some modifications to mitigate flare, but for the most part the external design could remain unaltered with minimal need for re-tooling.

Sunstars on the DFA21mm f/2.4 are nice but they don't seem to be as clearly defined as the ones you get from the SMC DA15mm f/4 ED Limited.

How do Pentaxians handle their massive photo library?

The NAS devices I work with have a feature which uses NVME SSDs that are used for high priority file access and (with the use of clever software and user set heuristics) these NAS systems can automatically move files off the SSDs that are less frequently accessed to platter based magnetic drives for cold storage.

SSD's are great for video work where very high and consistent data rates easy to maintain compared to platter drives, but for photographic uses SSDs are a bit of overkill. Also considering the price of energy, platter based 6Tb drives can chew up 8W of energy each. Spanned over 4+ drives this can add up to quite a bit of energy used over time, SSDs use a fraction of that power as they have no moving parts.

A NAS is preferable due to their storage management features and storage redundancy capability. Single external drives are useful for off-site storage, though I personally I use a second NAS that is located elsewhere for off site storage, I still use stand alone volumes for critical backups, SSDs with SED capability fitted in portable enclosures are very useful and secure.

New DFA21 2.4 review

I think the major distinction that can be made between the FA31 on crop and the DFA21 on crop is the close focus distance on the FA31 isn't quite close enough for common subjects.

The DFA21 focuses absurdly close for such a wide lens, and the image quality is superb.

Pentax KP D-FA21mm f/2.4 ED ASPH Limited @ f/2.4

The DFA21 suits the ergonomics of the KP and even without the grip, it fits in the hand comfortably without being front-heavy. The DFA21 on APS-C provides a FOV that is basically identical to the FA31 on the K-1: albeit with a drastically closer focus limit.

I have no doubt you would have a blast with it, you might even end up selling your DFA 24-70mm f/2.8 and switching to primes ;)

The DFA21 has few weaknesses optically - it reminds me a lot of the FA31 in this regard, even with cheap thick polarising filters flare is extremely well controlled. As a result the DFA21 requires very little in terms of post processing, stop it down to f/8~f/11* and you can be assured of excellent image quality across the frame. In lightroom classic: slight sharpening**, and remembering to check the remove chromatic aberrations is all that is really needed to get images ready for editing. Distortion is present but difficult to detect unless you are working with geometric subject matter that features a lot of lines that have to be rendered precisely.

Pentax K-1 DFA21mm f/2.4 @ f/11 1/30th ISO 100

* The DFA21 does have astigmatism, it is a very common optical issue with wide lenses. It becomes most apparent with near-far compositions, to counter it, slightly pull the focus back from the infinity point. Using magnified live view is excellent for managing this.

** IMO there is always a need for a slight increase in sharpening in images due to high frequency details being slightly attenuated from demosaicing process, for reasons that should be obvious pixel shift images will require less sharpening.

One thing I hear a lot are complaints about how much this lens costs - yes, it is expensive considering it is almost the same price as the more versatile and optically better corrected D-FA50mm f/1.4. However the expense is offset from the experience of working with this lens, which has been nothing but a joy for me. The expansive FOV and close focus capability it provides brings new possibilities to the table that weren't really feasible with previous offerings in this focal length class.

I'm not sure the DFA21 is significantly better - in my experiments with the R72 filter the DFA21 had a pretty strong hotspot when stopped down, wide open veiling flare was an issue.

Fair call, those sample crops were unedited and the additional fraction-of-a-stop difference of 1/200th vs 1/180th sync speeds between the cameras may attribute to the washed out look. In any case the Pentax K10D gains a bit of DR with ETTR, the K1 not so much. Furthermore, as I said in the CCD camera thread: Neither K1 or K10D presented the subject or the background faithfully. But I will mention with the appropriate camera profile instead of the one ACR uses, the K10D took the least amount of effort to "correct".

The Final result:

If cost wasn't any concern could you say the same for Leica, Phase one or any other niche brand out there? of course not. Cost and value are very subjective and relative things: and just because a camera is common doesn't make it the best possible choice for every photographic scenario. But in the hands of skilled hands even a 4X5 view camera can accomplish feats beyond the capacities modern mirror less cameras. This reminds me of a tale my teacher told me once of a photographer having bought a brand new and soul crushingly expensive Leica R7 with a 400mm f/2.8 APO Telyt lens. His mistake was his hubris: he assumed that such an advanced and expensive camera from Leica would have automatic film loading and frame advance, nope. He returned from an expensive wildlife safari in Africa with nothing but blank unexposed rolls of film.

I rarely make specific predictions on the industry, but I suspect Pentax will be around in some form or another for as long as the last SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 still emits radiation.

^THIS^

Though personally I blend my HDR images from a series of bracketed images by hand to give the ultimate level of control over image tonality. A well executed HDR image requires control and precision, and while there is software and in-camera options that can create a HDR image if the technical fundamentals of the image aren't in place: the results are less likely to be successful. Master the aspects of exposure and DOF control - then move on to more advanced techniques. Also if you intend to do a lot of work on your images I would also strongly recommend a graphics tablet or interactive pen display from Wacom* - these make image editing faster, more intuitive, and a considerably more enjoyable experience than using a mouse.

Pentax KP- Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 8mm ISO 100 f/11 - hand blended HDR. Tonal range represented here is well over 20 stops.

* FYI: I'm not on their payroll - they couldn't afford me.

I agree, there are more options for newcomers and the experienced alike, however it is easy to end up with more than what one needs which in a number of ways can be creatively inhibiting. Technology offers many wonderful tools but just to get started users need to familiarize themselves with the basics and have that knowledge at a solid level to build upon.

I have seen plenty of poorly executed HDR images where students have relied upon the camera or a piece of exotic software to work with their technical errors, these people wonder why I go through the effort of exposing manually and blending my HDR images by hand* when a camera or piece of software can do it automatically: the simple answer is precision and control.

* I also work with Wacom Cintiq touch/pen displays which make image editing fast, intuitive, and rather enjoyable.

Nice write up, it also wouldn't have hurt to include an APS-C camera to give a persepective on how the lens would perform on the newer K3MKIII - although for the APS-C user-base the DA21 exists, given the present state of reviews on the DA21 I have the impression the DFA21 would give the DA21 a real run for its money.

Just one small correction: the minimum marked focus distance on the DFA21 is actually 0.6ft ( measurements in inches always gave me a headache to translate into mm) - giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.26x* I haven't exactly checked the calibration of this and the exact MFD seems to be slightly closer than this indication, but in my pre-caffinated state it would be unwise to attempt checking it...

* which in the end is a more informative figure on subject magnification.

If I ever sell anything that I have enjoyed the use of it will undoubtedly be in well used condition, My sigma 100-300mm f/4 is well and truly battered lens but I have had a blast using it. If I ever sell anything in mint or pristine condition, that is a telling factor as to how useful it was to my work. Even my most valued posessions I would never refer to as beloved.

Or whatever Kerrowdown calls his lenses...
