Pentax KX, MX & LX Review from "Analog Insights" (Germany)

Leica is a prestigious brand Pentax is not. It's quite simple. Brand prestige is quite separate from quality or anything material. From what I understand from older people Pentax was a quality brand but didn't even have the prestige of Nikon or Canon never mind Hasselblad or Leica. This is going back to the seventies. So again for someone used to talking about extremely brutally expensive gear Pentax is a non prestigious quality camera.

They do a lot of Leica stuff so calling Pentax non prestigious makes sense.

I'd like to hear about it as well. I didn't manage to parse the translated page well enough to understand.

I think by "effect of fading" Ooku means that they have special refractive and dispersive characteristics. No defocus stuff as far as i can tell. I **think** that the patents suggests that the front element for instance is special glass despite it not being labelled as such in the marketing block diagram. I get lost in translation in the patents after that and struggle to decipher the references.

I've linked to this before, perhaps someone Ooku knows about...
????????????????DFA21mm F2.4 Limited? - ????

Computer translated pdf of the above page can be found here https://filebin.net/ack9uk3u7tpvywyp
But that analysis was prior to the patents being published so could only guess about certain aspects.

It's perfectly clear that the thread is about the already launched DFA21. I'm enthusiastic about a post that gives a bit more insight into the design of said DFA21. A thread about an announcement of a new 16mm would be a waste of *my* time.

Some people always bring in speculative new products in any thread but they can be safely ignored.

Thanks for the info! Lets hope none of the Pentax milc proponents gets a whiff of the short flange distance version ;) there will be endless speculation and refusal to accept that it's probably just to "lock" in the design.

Interesting about the amount of special glass. This means the marketing block diagram doesn't show all the special glass? May also be the main fact driving the high price.

Just testing the lens at Skogskyrkogården (the Woodland Cemetary) south of Stockholm. I usually don't post images here but I won't be using these for anything so decided to share. All taken handheld and fairly casually framed but shows how the lens handles this kind of thing. May supply hi-res and/or raw later but google drive was such a hassle so will see. The files have been developed in Rawtherapee using their "auto matched" colour profile and corrected using a lensfun profile I've created that so far corrects for distortion and tca. The lateral CA of this lens is quite strong but also cleans up quite well in post. Two of the images are testing how I might use the out of focus behaviour of this lens for my type of work.

The buildings seen here was designed by Gunnar Asplund. The landscaping was primarily by Sigurd Lewerentz who also designed a chapel on the site.

But it's just the classic FA100 macro with tube at the end. As so many earch milc lenses. Its not a new design just a new barrel.

You should be able to get good colours if you develop the raw file and find/make a good colour profile. The Pentax colour profiles twist the red hues.

What does the image look like on a different screen? Computer, tablet etc. (preferably a calibrated device). Pentax does tend to shift reds but usually away from orange.

The labelling differs between the DFA70210 and the Tamron equivalent. Thing is that the DFA100 formula is ancient and it sounds unlikely that they used aspherics and "super ed" in that first version? Similarly it seems unlikely that Tokina just lies about the changes to the new version of the lens. The DFA100 doesn't show any onion rings does it? I mean if they secretly put two asphericals in there it would show right?

It's also interesting if Pentax designed the lens and had it ready for 2019 and then waited to 2022 to announce it for Pentax. They must have had huge stock. It could of course be a different design than the "newish" Tokina but this lens quite an interesting case.

Edit: you were correct about the DFA2470 as well. The Anomalous dispersion asph is just an asph on the Tamron and the XR elements are unlabelled on the Pentax.

That's certainly interesting. The optical diagram looks identical to the dfa100 but as you mention they claim to have added special glass!

Bdery what's your view on that?

NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S - 0,2 m
Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G - 0.18 m
Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN | C - 0.22 m
ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21 - 0.25m

HD PENTAX-D FA 21mmF2.4ED Limited DC WR - 0.18m

So the DFA21 focuses closer than most similar lenses but only by a small amount.

That's what makes this so interesting. How little did they have to change. Hopefully they'll give detailed info on the changes at some point. I suspect it's an excercise in absolute minor changes to make it worthwhile instead of just doing a completely new lens. Just how minor is the question.

HD Pentax-D FA 21mm f2.8 - Field curvature test (looks good!)

Did a quick field curvature test with the DFA21 limited. Looks pretty good. Note that I was in a bit of a hurry and took handheld photos and picked a bit for tarmac that inclines and didn't carefully line up the camera 90 degrees to the inclination.

The file is an animated GIF and should move. If it doesn't your web browser setting are preventing it from moving.

I've been told by people on this forum that it's impossible to do such a thing because the whole formula would have to change. For me it would be interesting if Pentax did this "impossible"thing.

Ricoh-imaging.eu to be replaced by brand-oriented sites

First I though that the new Pentax site will be quite empty but then I realised that it *would* actually allow them to produce content for the site more easily as well as more clearly promote the brands. The current sites aren't that good at showcasing products or content. It kind of gets buried.

Consider a kind of mix of Pentax Official and Ricoh-imaging EU sites. Could be a good move.

New DFA21 2.4 review

The DFA21 isn't that big. It's actually small for what it is, possibly the smallest in it's class. With the cap on it's quite big but once the cap is removed it shrinks. Remember that the size includes a ~20mm deep hood. About the right size for the K-1 and shorter than the DFA100 without hood. It's not heavy either. I'm very size sensitive and I give it green light.

I think size was a pretty important design consideration but It doesn't come without cost and performance implications. The Zeiss Milvus, Sony 20 G etc are all bigger and I think even the Zeiss Loxia 21 is longer. The latter two being milc lenses. The price you pay for the small size is money and a bit more lateral CA than the best also perhaps a bit softer corners wide open. The longitudinal CA appears to be very very good and it makes sense to prioritise loCA over laCA since the latter is more easily removed in post processing. It's also important to know that few reviewers understand that sooc and Adobe remove aberrations without letting you control it.

It's a nicely made lens but I have to say that build quality is over played a bit. It's very close to DFA100 build wise and that's not a expensive nor exclusive feeling lens. It's nice enought though. It unsurprisingly can't compete with vintage K lenses etc. The manual focus works well but has that DFA100 feeling of gears moving, not the smoothness of proper helicoid lenses.

It does have a very nice bokeh for a wide lens but it seems to me lenses like the Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN | C almost gets there. The latter also has SA left in there to smooth things out. There are also other similarly priced or cheper faster lenses that achieve the look for milc and rangefinder.

All in all a very well balanced package for actual photography. Perhaps size is the main achievement. Expensive though.

Wow! It's really the exact same barrel. This is super interesting, I really wonder what they have changed optically, to my imagination it must be really minor to fit it into the exact same housing. That's not a bad thing, the main downside to dfa100 is fringing so if they solved it with only minute changes I'm impressed!

Keeping the styling is quite curious at it sort of undermines the luxury selling point of the DFA21 which has pretty much the exact same build. Lets the cat out of the bag that the limited barrels aren't that expensive to make. I like that they remove that plaque thing with the DFA100 typography and replaced it with engraved focal length and aperture as with the HD da limiteds and the DFA21.

I'm hoping to see the answer to my question if you can swap out individual elements for different glass types, and perhaps minor changes in lens curvature.

Edit: the capa page made me realise that they probably limit the special custom images styles to lenses because they don't have space in the menu. Four more custom image styles would require a new layout for the Custom image style gui.

I imagine the fa ltds are to "sacred" to mess with . A new line of DFA ltds is more likely imho. The idea that it's even possible to tweak formulas with special glass is controversial or impossible according to some.

HD was never supposed to fix purple fringing wasn't that just some of rumour? Interestingly the greatness of Pentax coatings may worsen the effect. Also the Pentax sensor treatment is a bit pf sensitive according to someone doing side by sides with same lens on Sony body.

It's incredible to continue seeing people downplaying this even after Pentax shows samples like that.

Any lens aberration or quality is only relevant in certain circumstances. You can shoot any lens and avoid the flaws. A good lens will perform well in most situations, or be exceptionally great at some niche.

Someone who shoots low contrast scenes and understands purple fringing would know that their personal experience of the aberrations is of no value. Same as someone who places the subject in the center have little useful input on barrel distortion. The person always shooting with the light behind them on flare. Or someone shooting interiors commenting on super tele lenses.

Just imagine someone insisting "flare is not a problem with this lens" and you find out that person *always* shoots with the light behind them.

A macro needs to be able to do shiny, glossy things to make product photography possible. All lenses should be able to photograph glittering water without a purple explosion. Not handling such scenarios are a huge downside to the lens. Limiting it's use.

Now the dfa100 has many great qualities. It's sharp, has good colours and nice bokeh. Still it fringes like few other lenses and that's an issue. An issue that Pentax is spending it rare resources resolving!

Those that claim that they don't see much pf with dfa100 must be photographing some rather limited and controlled scenes. Their views on any lens should be taken with a grain of salt from now on. Pentax own material is now clear evidence that reeds on the ground is enough for a festival of purple.

It is noisy though! For my use the speed of screw drive is a non issue. The noise however is really quite annoying and does make the whole experience feel a bit iffy. I've heard many argue that focus accuracy can be better with motors, particularly when using tracking af.

How bad screw drive lenses sound does vary quite a lot. It would be quite cool if Pentax made a real effort at silencing their screw drive af. Would be interesting to see what they could achieve.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they've changed optically. There has been discussions about whether it's possible to do minor tweaks including introducing new types of glass in formulas very closely resembling the old ones. Many said it's not possible so will be interesting to see what they've done.

The old DFA100 only really has one flaw* which is purple fringing. Fixing it in a lens much like the old one would be good.

*If nitpicking one could add screw drive af, and difficult manual focus near infinity to the list.
