Camera models today: lots still on the market

I'm confused ... don't disagree that there may well be too many models chasing too small a market but let's look at the basic facts presented and try to understand why they think Pentax has 10 current models.

We only see 3 but what about 645 and Q, small to non-existent volumes but still available(?) and maybe the KP counts as two models - black and silver and maybe K1 counts as two with original models still available.
But even that only makes 7 .... so what are these figures based on? do they include old stock eg KS1 and KS2 still being sold new.

As with all statistics you need to know the basis on which they are calculated. These figures are fine as far as they go but the extent to which they represent the market is doubtful.

Taking a step further - new lenses or upgrade body (K-x)?

Just a couple of factors I would throw into the discussion.
I have a KS-2 and would not be without the flippy screen, it enables points of view which would be difficult without it.
And I have lately been taking full advantage of its capability in lower light situations.
These have not made me a better photographer but have enabled me to take photographs which would otherwise be difficult.

Lens & Filter recommendations for travel photography

To add a bit of confusion on a recent cruise I used my 55-300 frequently to take pictures of interesting buildings on shore as we travelled past.

Don't know if New England or Nova Scotia have seaside villages like Norway but if they do then the reach of the 18-250 might be something you need.

Audio Recorder?

I've used a Zoom H1 in the past (don't shoot much video lately) and sync'd it with the video during editing.
Easy to do if you've got a sync point like a clap or some other easily distinguished noise.
I use Vegas as an editor which gives a profile of the audio tracks and by zooming in the timeline it's easy to relate the two audio files, remove the camera track and add the Zoom track.

How do you know before you buy?

I think there are two use cases here, the complete novice who hasn't used a camera (as opposed to a phone) before and the experienced user.
For the novice it's difficult because asking existing experienced users risks being influenced by their bias although I must say the members of this forum are pretty good in that respect.
For the experienced user it's more a case of what's missing from my current set up and checking reviews to see if there is any improvement in a new model.
The classic in the Pentax world might be faster autofocus or (at the risk of being flared) better video capability.
This mainly because the Pentax UI suits me well, others I've used have not felt so convenient.
This means I'm sticking with my KS-2 because I don't yet see a new model which offers improvement in the capabilities I find important.
And I will rely on the detailed reviews on Pentax Forum to inform my next buying decision.

As I read this post I'm on a ship cruising the coast of Norway. I've used my 55-300 pretty often to pick out details on shore as we pass. So far it's had as much use as my 18-55. YMMV

Pentax Password for WiFi?

Just for information I have a K-S2 with firmware 1.11 and a phone with Android 6.0.1 and Image Sync works fine.

I never use it to transfer images, too slow, but as a remote trigger with remote live view and the ability to adjust shutter speed and aperture it works fine.

I suspect you are trapped by the automaticness of the IPAD which wants to relieve you of the need to remember a password.
Maybe you can clear the Pentax Wifi connection out of the IPAD when it's not switched on?

Videoing with DSLR

It is certainly true that other manufacturers cater more completely for those who wish to take videos.
However it is possible to get "professional" results using Pentax cameras and there have been several examples on the Forum.

Equally Pentax cameras are entirely capable of shooting opportunist videos when the need arises. They may not be 4K and they
may need stabilisation in post but the reach they have when compared to the typical phone often makes up for this.

Or short answer, if video is your prime interest then Pentax cameras are not for you, otherwise they are fine.

And I have done both, used Sony and GoPro for more serious work and Pentax when I only wanted to carry one camera.

I can't speak for the photographic show at the NEC but I have been attending the motor sport equivalent for the last 15 years.

Once again this year it has shrunk, a trend which has been clearly evident over the last 5-7 years. Several businesses I know have stopped
exhibiting because of the high cost in terms of stand space/staff/accommodation/travel - in short the benefit is not enough to balance that cost.
I have no idea why Pentax/Ricoh made this decision but it I would not be surprised if their analysis showed insufficient pay back.

Hopefully they will have some innovative alternative marketing ideas which are more effective.

The K3 is a great camera but remember the K70 has a flippy screen which some people (myself included) find a great advantage.

Pentax K-S2 or Canon 70/80D? Worried about aperture problem

I have both K-S2 and a recently acquired K-5iiS. In many ways the K5 is better, obviously a more "professional" camera with all the features and characteristics you would expect. The K-S2 on the other hand has the flippy screen which I find very useful in some circumstances and WiFi for which I have some plans this year. Both are certainly capable of great results but any K5 you buy will inevitably be older than a K-S2 and although it may not have the block problem it will be more "experienced". I'm happy with both so I'm sure either will be an upgrade from K-01 (which I also have) but I think you would need to be more careful with a second hand K5 buy.

Hmmmm, think I'll move to Reigate if there's this much bargain Pentax equipment floating around!

But seriously I wonder why the screws were removed - maybe an attempt to solve some internal problem?

Film versus digital sales

But the clue is in the name ...... it's not to do with film versus digital but Instant against time taken to get a physical object from a digital image.

Film used to be slow even when processed at home but now with Instax the opposite is true.

Right to fixing a fault under warranty?

Just for my understanding - you say it wasn't a display model but surely the K50 had been replaced by January 2017 (the review of the KS-2 is dated August 2015 here and the KS-1 January 2015) and to quote " but it was bought perfect in the box its had low usage and been cared for very well!" which sounds to me like it had been on the shelf for a while, if not been on display and then put back when the K-S2 came out.

So this sounds like the JL warranty applies, Pentax would probably say it's JL's problem. So we come back to the issue that its' value to you is 600 but JL are looking at repair costs near to their 300 refund cost. From their point of view a refund is safest if not necessarily what you want

but I was on a two week trip India when I first read this post. Poor internet connections and a lack of time prevented an earlier reply.
I took my trusty yellow K-01 with the 15 ltd which worked very well in most cases in town. Clearly it wasn't much good for wildlife but that was only to be expected.
Just a couple of comments about India, it was very dusty - so much so that i would not have wanted to change lenses at all.
As it was I had to clean the outside of the camera most days.
And just at the moment atmospheric pollution is very bad particularly in Delhi, not so bad where we were in Gujarat but bad enough at times for those with any inclination to asthma.
