Engadget on SLR vs Mirrorless

Without a doubt he is advertising ML systems, but very informative none the less. Where ML cameras really shine is video and AF. But lets be honest, if you are shooting Pentax these things are not your primary concern anyways...

I was hoping he would give a shout out to Pentax when he was talking about in body stabilization and viewfinder crop on DSLRs! Guess he forgot about us :(

This Engadget video does a great job of explaining the differences between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras:

You Tube

He goes into a lot of detail regarding the mirrorless autofocus system and how the major brands are really pushing what AF systems are capable of. It seems to me that it is only a matter of time before mirrorless cameras become the norm.

I know sony and fuji are selling lots, but just how much of the market share do ML cameras have? Can Pentax get into the game?

Concert shots done with K-3 II.

Even at 50% hit rate you got some great shots. Well done in post as well. I am assuming you were not wide open with the Sigma? I was thinking the DA35/2.4 could work well for concerts.

I have wanted to bring my K50 to shows, but I am afraid of the mosh pits! Did you have stage access that allowed you to avoid the crowds? (of people with smart phones lol)

Thank you photogem. Your dedication to the K30/K50 community is very much appreciated. I could not have fixed my K50 without your posts. It is my first dSLR so I was happy to fix the aperture block issue.

To all those forum members with old digital Pentax bodies that your not longer using (k-r and older); please consider donating your body to Pentax forum members with the aperture block failure. If you take a peak in the K30/K50 specific forum you will see how widespread this problem has become. There are 2 white solenoids in many of these old cameras so you we can save two K30/K50s for every donation.

I can assist any users in the GTA with this repair. Please DM me.

I fixed my K50 yesterday with the white solenoid off Ebay (Seller: potmano $45USD+Ship)

Disassembly was fairly straight forward following the videos already on Youtube. Before the operation, make sure you are not lacking patience and have a good quality precision screwdriver set. Take care not to touch the large and obvious capacitor.

Soldering Technique:
1. Using tweezers, gently pull wire while applying hot iron to solenoid lead. The wires should release in a few seconds.
2. Replace green with white solenoid.
3. There should be enough solder left on the wires and white solenoid to make the connection. I applied a very small amount (tip of toothpick) of flux to the leads on the solenoid.
4. Remembering which was pink and purple, touch the wire to the top of the solenoid lead. Hold it there and apply gentle pressure with the hot iron until the connection has fused (you will hear her sizzle).

Very important - During reassembly, make sure the MF/AF switch is toggled in the middle position on the body and functional before you start putting screws back in.

Whole process took less than 100mins.

So I recommend to get solenoids only from:

Pentax *ist D, *ist DS, *ist DL, *ist DL2, Samsung GX1/2, GX10/20

Pentax K10D, K20D, K100D, K110D, K200D, Km, Kx, Kr

Photogem, ^this is a great resource.

Thank you and the Pentax Forum for helping us fix our new, low shutter count K-50s! Less than 7000 shutter actuations on mine.

Fixed just in time for Christmas :) My guess is that Pentax owners are cat people...

"Downtown" Camera Ltd

55 Queen St E #120, Toronto, ON M5C 1R6
(416) 363-1749 Downtown Camera Ltd - Google Search

Have not been but reviews are pretty good on this place at Queen/Yonge. It's right beside another camera store called Henry's who could also take look at it. If it really is something stuck to the sensor I would image the cost would be <$80 to clean it.

I am thinking about attending the airshow in Niagara Falls, NY this weekend. Got a few questions for you.

1. What focal length were you using for the action shots? and what shutterspeed?
2. Any tips on locking in the focus?

Ordering Prints Online (Toronto) Canada or Print at home

I searched the forum and couldnt find any recommended online printing agencies for Canadians. Does anyone have a website they can recommend for enlargements and general printing?

I am also curious as to the performance of Canon and Epson consumer photo printers. The pixma 8720 can be found on sale for around $200 and is able to print up to 11 x 17. How does the quality of these guys compare to the online option?

Balmy 5C in Toronto right now, Happy weekend everyone

Hi all,

I bought my first dSLR, a K-50, earlier this year and this site has been a great resource for improving my skills. I find the more I use my camera the more I am on the Pentax Forums! Great community, excellent articles and reviews. Now that I am able to take some decent photos, I'd like to share some of photos and experiences.
