31 all day long unless you're into the MF bug. Sigma might be technically better to some but it has reported AF issues and I just prefer the smoother OOF transitioning of the 31. You could also track down a 35/2 ZF. Luckily the 2nd hand prices of the 31 have dropped a good 25% over the last couple of years as people have departed to 'so called greener pastures'. My advice? Sell the KS-2, pick up a K-3, fit an O-ME53 on it, see how you get on with the DA35/2.4 and decide if that focal length works for you, then research the lens clubs on here for both the 31 and ART 35 and make a decision. The reason I suggest the K-3 is that it will prep you for an upgrade to the K-1 or K-3 replacement from a control model perspective and learning to handle its somewhat grainy files will stand you in good stead down the line.

Took me about 10 years to calm down. You need to really start off with some 3rd party stuff like Chinon or Vivitar to understand the crap out there, luckily that is a relatively cheap lesson. Next move onto the Takumar or if you have a bit of sense the Super Takumars. You'll lose a season or two messing around with these and then will try and skip the K's and try out some M's, mistake...
At this stage you'll recognise that old zooms are crap, and not all 28's or 35's are created equal and by in large the newer the lens the more forgiving it is to your mistakes. The trick now is to get hold of the plastic DA's (50 & 35) and compare them against a STak 50 or K35/f3.5 and ask yourself which do you enjoy using most? If its the DA's then you're home and dry - start looking at the DA Limiteds or FA versions. If it's the older lens, you're well and truly ****ed for years to come. I'd suggest start at the K's, then some A's especially the A*s and throw in some Zeiss and Voigtlander for giggles. After about 5 years you'll have gone through 3 or 4 types of each focal length and if you still have a bit of sanity you'll have done competitive match offs for each type and sold on the loser or else you may have a copy of each focal length for each series :) - This is of course for primes. Zoom users? Just beg, borrow or sell yourself for the newest focal ranges you think you deserve or are capable of carrying.

Lens roadmap: Tanaka-san spills the beans

I don't see any waste in Ricoh's strategy. They are keeping in the game, they have a niche carved out and the business model is to keep a core set of what 25,000 global customers? spending between €2K and €5K a year on enhancements to the system they like and take 20% to 30% margin which they can use for R&D to keep ticking over. They don't waste on advertising, they don't waste on complicated supply chain, they don't waste on loss leaders. The head count is probably minimal too, send in some engineers from the parent firm on secondment to learn how to innovate with limited budget and build some cross business communication channels. If I was in a leadership role in Ricoh, I'd use Pentax as a finishing school for those marked for success. A play area / training ground.
Brief to some hotshot manager or engineer coming up the ranks, you've an awful lot of automy, limited budget, there is a renowned history / culture, you're up against companies with factors of whatever against you in size, advertising clout, engineering resource, R&D budget... Show us what you can do.

I'm pretty cool with the idea of a stonking D-FA*24/1.4, will match nicely with the 50 and 85. And as the 85 is still 9 to 12 months away will mean we will have another 18 months to squirrel away the necessary €1500 or so for it.
I'm in the minority here in that I seem to have a sorted DA*16-50 barring that I needed to convert it to screw drive but I play to its strengths and don't go looking for weaknesses and we get along just fine.

Ref the discussion on this review verses PF's review, I wonder if Ricoh see Adam and PF as the hardcore extremist Pentaxian and just judge it safer to be reasonably vague. Imagine the forum if they gave a dated roadmap with planned MTF readings of each lens... and then had to delay!

Love / Hate with the HD D FA50/1.4

I would love to show examples but a Gentleman would not do that :) Suffice to say that the resolution of details is brutal!

Not a hope i'm smearing Vaseline on the front element but will look into that B+W filter Sandy mentioned if I was to use it in a portraiture scenario.

I'm more concerned about the upcoming HD D FA*85/1.4, potentially it will have the same resolving capabilities which means it could be just as brutal :p - Supermodels or babies need only apply.

I'm a fan, don't mistake the title but I'm finding I'm hating it for portraiture, it just resolves too much detail even at f/1.4! Case in point, we had a couple of models in my local photoclub last Tuesday, a 60 something gentleman and a 20 something woman. Now either he had a seriously close shave that afternoon that distorted the result but I can make out more hairs on her face :)

I have seen that the 'experts' on the interweb demand more and more sharpness across the frame but if this carries on I can see Pentax dusting off the designs for the 85 Soft series and creating a whole new lens design dynamic.

I'd expect this and want this from a macro but a standard lens?

Been there done that. You need to swap out the nifty 50s for the A50/1.2 for a season or 2.

The Samyang really needs to be replaced by the 77, no question.

The 43, it is along with the 77 the best bang for buck you'll get anywhere but there are like driving an 80s hot hatchback verses the sheer competence of newer models with 250+ horsepower. You can take either on a wet twisty road like Molls Gap close by to me but you'll forever remember the 80s car for the input you had to make and its the same with the 43. Learn and play to its strengths and it'll blow you away.

I'll throw in a curve ball for your LBA, the DA*50-135/2.8, doesn't have the reach of the 55-300 but in its range capable of utter magic.

S!

I've a DFA* 50 that is seemingly glued to my K-1 plus I need / want to get more involved with my photo hobby. I'm in :)

I feel like elaborating a bit more. I got this a few months back as an early birthday present (Dec 11th) and it sat in its box waiting patiently, I lie of course, it was taken out a couple of times for a couple of test shots :p but wasn't used in earnest. My birthday was on a Tuesday and I spent the day pottering about doing F all. Work then took the rest of the week I think and we flew to Tenerife to visit my dad for Christmas. It is nicely built by in large but the hood feels flimsy and it has sharp edges at the front. Balance wise on a K1 sans grip is goldilocks for me. Left hand cradling lightly and right hand in grip and while you know it is near enough 2 kilos, it just feels rock solid. Optically I must confess not getting to grips with it yet, for sure it has resolution to spare but at wider than f/2.8 it highlights and will punish you for inaccuracy.

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

Bah, more ado about nothing. DPR does not like the Ricoh / Pentax way of doing things, they haven't for years. They ignore the superior ergonomics (probably worth half a stop in manual stabilisation), they ignore the capabilities of both the Green button and the Pentax Program line automation. They harp on about some high ISO RAW file optimisation but neglect to point out that the some of mirrorless brigade require lens optimisation at the lowest ISO to fix optical design decisions.
Ah well, it is the world we live in. People are dumbed down, don't or won't research and require instant gratification so AI will make your decisions in future, you won't be able to drive a car, fly a plane or take a picture without help. Works for the lowest common demoninator, they have to protected from themselves :)

K-1 & 31, last min decision. Safety shot just taken and uploaded to Flickr..
BTW I have Love, Hate, Hate relationship with this particular lens. I know its good, has nice bokeh, exceptional rendering, can be reasonably sharp, expensive, stupidly unbalanced and a lot of people on here either have one or would love to have one but but I just don't get it at times and will leave it in the bag while its sister the 43 and 77 get pulled out to play more often. This month is as much about me trying to figure out what the magic of the 31 is, as I don't get it.

Diffraction it is then. ISO was constant during the test so rules out my accelerator theory. The only thing stopping this lens are the known laws of physics!

It's called diffraction, on some sensors you won't notice until f/11, on others you might see effects @ f/5.6. Diffraction will be the result of both the lens and sensor combination.

But also as I pondered out loud (tongue in cheek) if perhaps during the test that the ISO was raised as the lens was stopped down which may have brought the NR accelerator into play and take a percentage of absolute resolution as shown in the MTF50 chart. This would make more sense to me than what looks to be almost a 10% drop between f/5.6 & f/8.0 on a brand new optic.

Curious that there is a noticeable drop between f/5.6 & f/8, almost analogous to a higher ISO at which a certain accelerator comes into play? :) just speculation of course but I'm getting my pop corn out just in case.

Now if only he had access to a 43/1.9 and a 50/1.2 which are the missing link in the older optical formulas. The 50/2.0 is near enough a f/1.7, the M is my least favourite 50/1.4 and the 55/1.8 was always just a little bit of the red haired step child in the 50's line up, marvellous portrait lens on APSC though.
Good write up though, well explained and detailed.
