Does anyone shoot video with their Pentax?

I'm still here. Its been a long time since I used a Pentax camera body for video, but I still use Pentax DA lenses and other Pentax glass with Novoflex adapters on Sony cameras. The absolute minimum video standard these days is 1080p/60 with 50mbps...which does not exist in any current Pentax body.

However, I still shoot stills with Pentax bodies, and my 645z goes everywhere with me.

If by some miracle the next APS-C Pentax body does good video, I will in a heartbeat, bring Pentax back into my professional workflow.

Heck, these days, I am comfortable just having Pentax as my "feel-good" camera without worry about whether or not it fits into my professional workflow.

With so many video projects that I do...I still need the comfort of a Pentax regardless.

Recommended audio editing software for videos

In a timeline, "audio tracks" can be spoken words, sound effects, music or what not. You might have to take out noise, enhance something, or stretch something to replace something somewhere. Because of the integration with Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition is the go-to utility when you are working an Adobe timeline. Nothing else allows easy re-importing, as well as working with your final encoding/rendering. Premiere has some really amazingly good audio features too, so only when you really need to work something, its great to have audition there.

Have you experienced pressure to switch systems?

First...I have to laugh. With a Novoflex adaper, he could continue to use his Pentax glass on Sony mirror less...especially for video, like I do. APS-C is just about Super 35mm - which is what my Sony FS5 and FS7 are. Pentax DA glass is PERFECT because of the nature of the step-less aperture for video. Second, there is no better field camera out there than Pentax. Nothing comes close. Third, peer pressure? To switch tools? If a tool works, use it. Who cares what others think. Peer pressure is something made up. Be strong, don't succumb.

I had a few international gigs on the calendar as well as stuff in the USA.
All. wiped. clean.
Not a single trip planned, the first time in like...7 years.
Dunno what I am going to do.
Stay safe!

Is the poor video support in DSLRs going to ensure their early demise?

Thanks for the shout out!
I re-read what I wrote back in 2018, and I still stand by that.

If an APS-C Pentax comes soon, and it can at least do 1080p/60 or better, Pentax will once again make an appearance in my video workflow. You just can't beat the weather-sealed field camera of a Pentax.

In the stills department, I am often asked to do photography as a cinematographer, and I use the 645z which is sublime.

So Pentax *is* part of my daily (professional) workflow in some capacity.

side note: when on assignment in Japan, I always make a point of buying some kind of Pentax gear when I am there.

I love these "template" light houses on the west coast of the USA.
Here is something I shot several years ago - look how they are almost identical.

GoDox XPro and AD200pros and you will never look back. I use the AD200Pros with my Sony or Pentax and all I need is to use the brand specific transmitter. Trust will never look back.

Pentax -
Sony -

Also, if you do have a brand specific flash - I have two Sony Godox VING V860IIS - and I can use them with the Pentax triggers.
Really amazing system GoDox has.

Using the GoDox system, you can adjust the power and groups without running all over the place. Its amazing.

Thanks! It helps that I was driving myself around, and I stayed the night at the foot of the Castle. THOUSANDS of people come in for the day, take the bus in, and leave in the afternoon.

Its a magical place after 6pm, and before 10am.

The Spark has an inferior gimbal, and only does 1080p.

The Mavic Air (which I travel with) is the go-to drone for traveling since it has a superior gimbal, 100mbit, does 4k and is actually smaller folded.

The Spark is one step above a toy.

Its true. They look like regular macaroons...but they are not.
A Pentax "looks" like other cameras...but they are not.

When you see people lined up, waiting in line for the fresh realize that these will never be able to leave, and be shared with a global or wider audience.

Spruengli is fine with that.
Pentax is like that.

Once you get *it*, you might eat regular macaroons...but you will always want the real thing in your hands.
Pentax is like that.

Yep. Me too. No sense in getting upset. 1981 is when I came into Pentax.

You got it there. It would be insanity...and Pentax/Ricoh knows this. Why fight a losing battle that could take the ship down? You have to respect the Japanese decision makers for not engaging in a lost cause.

I saw that too..but no access to the battery compartment with the L-bracket.

Here is the deal. In Japan, you can go into pretty much any camera retail department, and see well stocked Pentax gear. In Japan there are three Pentax repair centers that are within a day's drive or less. In Japan, you can go into a repair center and get great customer service. In Japan, there are stores that carry used Pentax gear in pristine condition.

See where this is going?

Pentax/Ricoh is a Japanese camera company not so much because they are based there, but because Japan is the only market that Pentax/Ricoh cares about. They make "enough" money to keep folks employed and happy, and for Pentax/Ricoh, that is enough.

Sure there are pockets around the world where Pentax cares, but generally its Japan that matters to Pentax.

So, now that is out in the open, maybe it will help your decision? I am a rabid Pentaxian, and where I can, I use Pentax in my professional media workflow. However, when I can't even get an "L-Bracket" for a K1 with grip, and I have severely limited choices in the aftermarket space, its natural to realize that Pentax cameras, while awesome and so dear to me, do not have enough depth to keep up with my other gear.

Knowing that and realizing that, is the reality of loving Pentax.

Pentax is a Japanese brand.

I can't get Luxemburgerli anywhere outside of the limited places they are made around Switzerland, and the Spruengli folks are just fine with that.

So its not uncommon for a product to be regional/country specific, and not matter what the demand is.
Once you have a will want it everywhere...but that will never happen.

The Luxemburgerli "look" like other products out there, but once you eat one, you realize there is NOTHING like one.

Same with Pentax.

Tokyo is awesome...but its also VERY easy to get around to the rest of Japan. Get on a train, and go to the countryside. Japan is amazing. Shinkasen is your friend!
Japan Taxi (app) and Uber take you the rest of the way. Easy peasy.

Vanguard Ball Head?

The GP-ss was a little smaller than I imagined, but it locks well and the adjustments are very nice (even with my 645z or K1). I got mine with the quick release lever - which was even more expensive. AcraTech is one of the few companies that adheres to the "Arca-Swiss" standard, and has a detent pin for whichever plate you plan to use. Arca plates seem to have two standards - one with the little pins at the ends, and the other with the shaped-out portion under the plate. The AcraTech works perfectly with both.

Having had so many heads...its hard to explain why I waited, and why now I am extremely happy - even though I feel its a bit too expensive.

You'll see what I mean.

Is DPReview just Hopelessly Anti-Pentax?
Posted By LaurenOE

Pentax perplexes those that grew up on the available brands. Pentax doesn't use "influencers" and there is zero "churn" from the internet to review and comment about. The lenses and pretty much the entire Pentax line is mature and a few things come and go without much fanfare. DPReview - as in "Review" - would go under if they waited around for something from Pentax to review and fuss about. Naturally, not much about Pentax fits with a site that is about comparisons and reviews and details and such. You buy a Pentax to take still photographs. You might do some video, but the focus on Pentax is still photography, and "field" photography at that. Since the industry is very much into cameras that do both video and stills, Pentax once again is not up to the challenge of being talked about. So yeah, DPReview is hopelessly anti-Pentax or at best indifferent to what Pentax offers.

No love for the Pentax EI-2000 and EI-3000? The EI-2000 was sold. What about the EI-C90? There is a window before the *ist-D where there are a few digital cameras in there. You can't ignore the transition period from film to digital without talking about these cameras.

Well...the folks that don't spend money on cameras, and Pentax ones, must be doing something right because folks like me...who spend THOUSANDS each year, and do it professionally...can't seem to get Pentax/Ricoh to give me a camera with decent video! I've asked and waited and can show how much I have in Sony gear...but folks that don't spend money must have a magic about them, since Pentax/Ricoh ignore me.
