Just Got an MX

Congratulations. I bought my MX in 1979 and learned my photography on it. I have it today, and it still gets the occasional outing. I had the foams replaced about 15 years ago and I think it will be good for another 20 years at least. Do a regular cycling of the shutter speeds.

Great thing about the MX is the batteries are just for the meter. It is fully functioning at all speeds and apertures without batteries making it the perfect trecking film camera.

While I admire your expectations, this is an impossible dream

The question I would pose is....."but are you getting the best IQ for your chosed FL and camera sensor"?

Sure you can plonk any lens on a smaller format and claim to have "longer reach, or "narrower field of view". But the smaller format needs to have a higher pixel pitch or improved tech, or you are achieving nothing that a crop of a larger format could do. Magnification "at the sensor" is identical across all formats.

40 years ago my MX travel kit was M series : 28mm 2.8 50mm 1.7 and 135mm 3.5.

Didn't need a kit bag for that combo. Everything fits in your pockets !

After you run a calibration on a screen, you should be using that calibration, not sRGB or "standard"

That is correct behaviour. You can use Av mode but the capture will be wide open only. Any other auto mode will revert to Av.

It wont. It has no way of reading the aperture.

Use M mode and press green button for the camera to take a stopped down meter reading and select a shutter speed. Then take your shot.

Or use Av mode (wide open only)

Resolution is the same for both, 7360x4912 pixels.

As a test process a raw file using the ACR Pentax profile the same as you have set in your camera (natural, bright etc). Then point out why the JPEG from the camera is inferior to the JPEG from Adobe Camera Raw. For most average scenes they should be identical

Your images are quite good, very good in fact. The 28-105 is an excellent lens from what I have seen others post. You should persevere with it.

Changing lenses or hoping for a cheaper prime that will outperform the existing fast zoom range (15-30; 24-70; 70-200) is wishful thinking.

The BIG advantage of your investment into the Pentax FF system is the multitude of quality and largely reasonably priced legacy lenses you can use. You should get a hood for these lenses as the coatings are not up to today's standards for flare control. But when accurately focussed in the correct conditions, the quality of the optics literally shines through.

Have a look at my recent posts here, with a M* 300mm f4 and a M 85mm f2.0. Lenses that are 42 and 37 years old respectively.

Not understanding this statement. JPEGs from the K1 are exceptionally good.

I shoot raw exclusively and produce TIFFs and JPEGs from those raw files. As all my output whether for the web or for printing is produced in the end in JPEG format, I take the opposite view, JPEGs are fantastic.

In the 1970's they produced one of the first sandwich toasters. Big television advertising campaign. It was a huge success, everyone had one, really popular. I think I remember the European business floated on the stock market. Then the fad ended.

It will look very bad, bottoms of markets always do. Then they turn.

Either that or our DSLR's will end up in a museum next to the Breville sandwich maker.

It could also be the aperture adjusting to maintain a viewable image as you change from a dark to a light scene. Or a combination of both.

I print pictures every few months. I dont do them myself, I use a commercial printing firm. A have a couple of frames in the house that I change regularly for the latest efforts !

I print at 24" x 16" on fine art Hahnemuhle paper. Costs about 30 per print including postage. Well worth it in my book.

Setting the aperture on the 135mm f/2.5 bayonet

Using a manual lens on a modern Pentax DSLR you first need to change the menu setting to "Enable" using aperture ring.

Then you can use the camera in M or Av mode.

Only M mode will stop the aperture down when you take the shot. You meter by either pressing the green button, or use the DOF preview method.

In Av mode you will get correct exposure because the camera will select the shutter speed, BUT the lens will always be wide open, irrespective of where the aperture ring is set to.

Any other mode (Tv or P for example) will simply revert to Av mode.
