Your FF Travel Kit

Hi folks,
recently returned from a 7 week trip to the US with the K1.2 and a bag of lenses, mainly primes.

In my opinion the perfect travel kit for the Full Frame is:
Pentax DFA 24-70 f2.8. Gives me all round capability, is on the camera most of the time. Yes, can sometimes be too short, but can also occasionally not be wide enough. A 15-30 would be a good companion, but already have a Tokina 20-35, and the bag is at its max weight now.
Pentax FA 43 Ltd. Say no more.
Sigma EX DG 70 -200 f.2.8. A quality lens that gets a lot of use, fast, sharp, covers most tele situations....and then there is the crop.

Even that with a laptop will struggle with some airlines 7kg carry on limit, we have one in Australia that weighs your bag at the gate (be warned if flying with the orange colour)...you can pay more if its over 7 kg or it goes into the hold, again at a fee, think staff must be on some sort of commission. I did not encounter this with several other Australian & US airlines we used throughout the trip.

Anyway, moving on.....that kit leaves many good lenses at home, namely 100, 200 & 300 primes.

What I would like to see for the full frame is a quality (say F4) super zoom in the 28-300 or longer range, if they could make a good one at price point around that of the 60-250 I believe they would have a winner.

It wont be everyone's "cup of tea" but they have a place in that travel situation where time is often limited and opportunities are sometimes fleeting.

Thanks for dropping by folks. Appreciate it. One thing I am noticing with the K1.2 is the processing capability of the RAW files seems to yield better outcomes....I'm sure there is a scientific explanation for this but it is noticeable.

The 35-80 is a very old lens purchased for $20 or $30 secondhand 18 years ago, it still works but is tight in the zoom action, I suspect some dirt build up. The DA 17-70 is a great lens, purchased new on release in Australia, also have a DA* 16-50 in reserve to replace it for now, but may consider a new 17-70...have seen them at very low prices.

I do not think this is any reflection on Pentax at all, we are pretty tough on lenses, they get a lot of travel, some of it in checked baggage these days as well. We get them wet, muddy and dusty so I am actually very happy with the life we have had from the 17-70.

Glad you enjoyed the image.

Back home again from our epic 7 week road trip. Left home with the K1 Mk2 and K3 Mk 2 in my bag, fitted out with Sigma 24mm f1.8. FA 43, Sig 70-200 f2.8, DA* 300 & FA 35-80.
Intitially used the 35-80, but it soon started playing up, getting very tight in its zoom action. Resorted to the 24 & 43 but quickly got frustrated being caught out with the wrong lens on the camera for the situation and windy weather making lens changes tricky. All the time Anne is happily shooting away with her K3 & DA 17-70....until it started to not focus, I suspect the SDM (worth repairing ?), she had packed a Sigma 18-250 as a back up.
Found a very good deal on Amazon for a 24-70 and had that delivered ahead to where we were staying three nights,
As per tradition, attached below is the very first shot taken with the 24-70 which only comes off the K1 mk2 for the Sigma 70-200 now. Very very happy with the purchase. Still have a lot to learn about the camera, it is a similar yet different beast and I am only starting to work my way through the shots. Will post more as I do so.

The mandatory first shot....really crappy conditions, but hey ! I wasn't waiting for perfect either so lets see what the Pentax 24-70 f2.8 can do under pressure.
Somewhat ironic that the first shot should be here.? or just appropriate.

Hi Dave....We wish !! No, its all very much self funded, each paying their own way. We have managed to stay out of the clutches of agents by booking most things ourselves,
this is my 10th trip to the SW, so have built up a bit of a budget travel plan over the years.

So looking forward to seeing this place, late October, not long to go now. Did you use any filters? Sky is a little blown out, always difficult in these situations, but also the difference between good and great. Straightening a must.
Its an image with a lot of potential.

Only teasing Mike, I apologise if it came across as you (personally) were grumpy, it was just a dig at mods in general who are often called upon to make calls, which will please some of the people, some of the time, nothing more than that.
Cheers

PS: Bugger....now I realise I have probably upset ALL the mods....oh well...the shoulders are broad and the hide thick.

K3, K3 ii (which I have) or KP, owned by a friend known as hobbles, who speaks very highly of it. Have the DA 14 mm, its good, wouldn't call it great; DA 21mm I do call great. DA* 16-50, I rate as good to great but the lens that I like the most is the DA 17-70 f4, have got lots & lots of great shots using this lens. Anothwer lens I have used but do not own, & rate highly is the DA 12-24......but an 80D ?? absolutely no idea...never heard of it.

Hmmmm.....does a ticket to Florida to carry Le Rolls' gear on his next shoot count ?....I might get to drive the Jeep. ;-)

Ok, given that the grumpy mod will probably rule that one out, I am then torn between a 15-30, 24-70 & 150-450, plus extra batteries, filters etc or using it as a deposit on a 645.
Decisions, decisions, decisions to ponder as I make my way to the post office.

There are no "bad" cameras in this current market. Some will offer you lots of tricks and frills that you will never actually use, some will back it up with glitzy marketing to get you to buy more than you need.....and then there is Pentax.
