Kodak HC-110 & Ilford HC

The HC-110 formula is a trade secret and has not been duplicated.

Ilford's HC is not a drop-in replacement, but should give similar results to HC-110, once you adjust times/temps/dilutions for the difference in formula.

AF-540FGZ off-camera flash

The 201 is not a P-TTL controller or master.

You'll need another 540, a 360 II, or one of the third party flashes (Metz are my favorite and until very recently basically your only option in P-TTL).

Cactus also makes a P-TTL transmitter that you can use if you don't want a flash on camera. Cactus V6 II HSS Wireless Flash Transceiver| CACTUS

Note that with P-TTL you can set the on-camera flash to merely act as the controller and not contribute to the exposure. A used Metz or 540 would be cheaper than a pair of the Cactus transmitters.

Another newer Windows 7 "Warning" - Will officially become unsupported January 2020.

Windows 7 for people with good internet hygiene and good firewalls & security software will remain viable for some time even after support has ended. Most people I have worked with in computer repair don't have all three of those. Not a slight against them, just reality.

I work in IT and recommend everyone who can, upgrade to 10 ASAP. It's just a matter of time before software you need stops supporting 7. How long will patched versions of Firefox or Chrome still run on 7, for example?

If you must stay on 7 beyond January 2020 for legacy hardware, I'd recommend you relegate 7 to a VM or a spare PC that does not have internet access, and only power it on when you need to use that hardware.

Windows 7 is still a huge target for malware and once Microsoft is no longer patching it, that will only get worse. Staying on 7 past end of support just because you "like it better" is foolish. I like not having to fumble with keys to get in my house, but that doesn't mean I leave my doors unlocked.

You should be able to get sharp results from the kit lens, it's not the best lens in the world in terms of speed (both aperture and focusing) or range, but it is fairly sharp.

I think you may be asking too much of your skills to expect to be able to see detail in tree bark in those images. For one the scene is too contrasty to get detail in both the trees and the snow (you've picked the snow) and for two depth of field at 50mm, f/5.6 is roughly 3 feet.

I have yet to see evidence that the camera or lens is defective.

Plustek scanner weird results

I doubt Silverfast uses their own driver. Most likely Silverfast uses Plustek's driver, they just bundle it into the installer. I have never actually looked into this, but I doubt Silverfast duplicates Plustek's effort here.

I'm not sure the driver remark is accurate for Plustek scanners. I'm pretty sure Vuescan uses Plustek drivers for Plustek scanners, since I recall having to install Plustek drivers to be able to use my 7400 with Vuescan.

driver issue, could also be the USB port you're using. try a port on the back of the machine (if desktop).

Aperture is messed up. Anyone use Affinity Photo?

Affinity is not a DAM, so it is not a replacement for Aperture.

Affinity is a replacement for Photoshop.

I find the combo of Apple Photos (as inadequate as it is) + Affinity has been working okay but I am not fond of it. I loathe Apple Photos.

You may want to bite the bullet and migrate to Lightroom. There is an Aperture to Lightroom migration plugin available, to make it seamless.

Film Camera that is like modern SLRs??

The Z-1p is probably the closest to DSLR controls - it has two control dials. The MZ-S is the youngest pro SLR, but doesn't really handle like a DSLR - it uses the lens aperture ring.

The LX is a brilliant camera. I think every Pentaxian should experience one.

I sold mine and don't regret selling it, I loved it while I had it but for me, the MX is a better fit. The smaller footprint of the MX is appreciated.

How do you scan your film?

I recently got a Nikon Coolscan IV, a 35mm dedicated scanner. It came with an attachment to scan a 6-frame strip batch, so it's much faster than my slightly higher resolution Plustek 7400. The Nikon also has ICE which my Plustek didn't, so I'm able to scan even faster.

I don't find the 2900DPI of the Nikon to be a hindrance. This results in a roughly 11MP file, which is plenty of detail for me.

I suppose so, I guess I've never considered it. I'm not crapping my pants over the possibilities I guess, it doesn't seem like a transformational shift like the linked article is suggesting.

Phones do this because the tiny sensors they use become a noisy blur after say ISO 200. A relatively recent DSLR can go to ISO 6400 with far better image integrity than a phone at ISO 200.

Again, these levels of computational photography are not necessary with DSLRs because they do not have these deficits. They are no compromise machines purpose built for photography.

The Motorola phone with a Hasselblad zoom attachment was interesting, I thought it was a great idea - attach a "real" camera to your phone when you need it (like when you're going to a concert or vacation), otherwise make due with the built-in job - but it doesn't appear to have taken off.

The computations that Apple and others apply to their photos are mostly to make up for deficits in their designs. The phones are thin and light so they can't put in large sensors or zoom lenses or a Xenon flash.

DSLRs do not have any of those deficits. I do not see a need to apply "computational photography" to DSLRs.

The phone has killed point and shoots and probably even low-end DSLRs like the Pentax K-S1, but I don't see DSLRs or MILCs as a whole going away because of phones. Some brands will be casualties but that's business. The photographer's control, image quality, and flexibility are what DSLRs and MILCs do so well, and I don't see that overtaken by phones.

For most of the past year or so, I only took my phone on trips. It was okay, I was able to work within the limitations, but in a few weeks I'm going to Bermuda and will be bringing my Pentax gear along.

Problem with a MZ-3 ... DoF button

Not familiar with that particular model, but with a lot of these MZ cameras the aperture lever is actuated by a plastic gear (great idea right) that gets brittle and strips out over time. That's likely what's happened to yours. Definitely return it. If you're serious about film, get an MZ-S or PZ-1, or a manual focus model like the MX or KX.

The MZ-7 is a decent camera, but will likely eventually suffer the same fate as this MZ-3.

Ektar 100 started out on 35mm, at the time Kodak had no plans to produce a 120 format of the film. Not long after, 120 and sheet formats of Ektar 100 were available. I'm sure the same will happen with Ektachrome as well.
