Very "on target".

I never, ever, shot video on any of my Pentax bodies, and probably never will - unless there's a fire in the building or something, and I don't have my mobile with me. I am interested in photography (on my own very limited level), not in video. I couldn't care less about the video capabilities of a photographic camera - it's good to have it for an emergency, but that's it for me. I wouldn't spend a further dollar for the damn thing.

If people want video capabilities, I'd say search somewhere else. That's one of the reasons I chose Pentax: providing cameras that are designed with photography in mind - the whole concept of shooting video on a dslr is somewhat strange for me, but maybe I'm old fashioned.

I too feel that cameras like the the new Sony A9 are not for people like me, and possibly many Pentax users, who like to "see" with the camera, as a means to show a particular moment in time. All else, AF, AE, SR, whatever, are little bonuses, not essentials. I love the sound of the shutter, I like being forced to think before I shoot something.

But I digress...

So, anyway: Pentax can and should provide better video capabilities, if feasible, but not as a central part of the camera - I'm very happy with the K-1, it's one hell of a camera and I would feel dumb using it to shoot videos of my silly dogs running around. My android phone is perfectly suitable for that. But when it comes to photos, I'm a perfectly happy camper.

Yongnuo YN585EX P-TTL Wireless Flash Speedlite for Pentax

I bought one, but I'm not really knowledgeable enough about flashes to write a review. The results are good for occasional shots of my dogs or family reunions indoors (I don't use much flash). One thing, though, is boggling me: there is no AF assist light coming on from the unit. The manual clearly says it has it, but it's not working in my unit - and yes, that's while shooting in AF-S and with AF assist ON. Neither the camera, nor the flash head will fire the AF assist beam. Maybe I received a bad apple, maybe there's some catch I'm not aware of.

PS - Searched all over the web and found nothing except the "single frame mode / AF assist on" reccomendations, which usually do the trick. Not in my case, though.

White dots... Just once.

The lens wasn't changed between shots and the camera was brand new (a couple fo days), so dust on sensor would be improbable. There are several images taken in quick succession and this is the only one where this occurred, so I'm inclined to go with the hypothesis of dust or drops of sweat in the air.

As for PP creating the dots: it's not a matter of "creating" them, but rather of enhancing something. Sure enough, if I load the image without any post processing, the dots are not visible. It's when I push the blacks up and add a bit of clarity (+15 in LR) that they show up.

As you can imagine, I was worried when I noticed this for the first time. But since I also noticed it had something to do with pp and didn't show up on any other pics, I'm not worried anymore. Just a tad curious about about the causes. :)

Seems quite a reasonable explanation. It is true that this only shows up after processing. Though it may be not from sharpening, but, according to my own experiment with pp settings, due to pushing up shadows and adding a bit of clarity. So perhaps all combined. I first thoug of tiny bits of sand thrown up...

Thanks for the input.

Can be... But the following shots don't show them, although nothing was changed in between. That's what I find odd.

Hi, all

I recently received my K-1 and I'm quite impressed with it.

There is, nevertheless, an issue that's been troubling me: it shows-up in one of a series of shots (just a couple of days after receiving it) of a "capoeira" demonstration at the beach nearby where I live.

They all came out fine (except for the photographer's errors...), but on this one, when viewed at 100%, a strange splash of white dots appear in a section of the shot. I annexed the shot and a 100% crop of the section.

None of the other several shots taken at the same location, with the same settings, etc., show this - which is quite intriguing. Of course I have seen reports of the infamous "white dot" issue, but it does not seem to be an issue at ISO 200, which was the ISO at which this photo was taken.

Any ideas why this happened?

(PS. - I always shoot RAW. This apperas afeter processing, both in Lightroom and Capture One 10).

Your guesses are welcome!

Just wow!

I'm not a usual "poster" here, though I've been a regular visitor/reader for many years. These pics forced me to comment.

I'll order my K-! soon... Can't wait to put my 'FA's and 'A's to (better) use. I'll have to use them on the K-3 for now... I know: first world problems...

Ricoh is appropriating Pentax History now.

Seems rather factual (though the mention of ricoh imaging americas corporation sounds a bit strange in this context). No need to read something that isn't there: Pentax as a company no longer exists, but it's legacy, a product line of cameras branded Pentax, survives as part of Ricoh Imaging. I don't see how this is «appropration» of anything.

PDCU - fix highlight in picture...

PS - I have been using PDCU quite a lot lately, and I must say it gives the best results of all RAW software I've tried. This is especially true concerning faces, where the skin tones given by PDCU are really amazing, much better than Lightroom or others.

I still use LR 4, which does a good job (much better IMO that 3.6) with PEFs, but for those pics where I want to get the best quality I use PDCU, export as TIFFs and make final adjustments in Photoshop - and then High Pass filter for sharpening. The results are the best I can get from my PEFs.

PDCU - fix highlight in picture...

Hi!

To be honest, I wouldn' care much about the overexposed bits of hair, as they don't seem to be a problem with the image, but there you go:

I opened the image in PDCU and here's what I've done (I usually don't touch the curves, as I find that most of the time PDCU does an excellent job simply with minor adjustments in other tools).

1. Reset the picture to all default values.

2. Set exposure to -1 (or you can try -0.75). If you check the hystogram, you'll see that the brightest parts of the hair get close to the limit, but stay around 250 or less.

3. Set Shadow Compensation to Medium.

In Custom Image:

4. All sliders to center, except Shadows contrast (the one above Sharpness), set to two increment steps, and Saturation (the first slider), to minus one increment step - this is to eliminate the slight reddish cast on the gentleman's face. Finally, one increment step in Contrast (the centre slider).

Adjust sharpness as you wish.

Hope it helped.

Couldn't agree more! Absence of a VF would be the only drawback for me... I really cannot use a camera without a VF, optical or not.

I do like the look of the K-01. What I think is ugly is that recent Nikon EVIL, but just a matter of taste.

If it has the sensor of the K-%, allows the use of K Mount lenses, is relatively small, but not too small, the only thing it lacks, really, is the VF. Or perhaps not, let's wait and see...

It's a crappy piece of software, from a usability point of view, no doubt... Whatever the version. It does a good job, however, if you are patient....
