DFA 85mm f/1.4 Now on Ricoh's Website

I have two fa lenses 50 and 35 and they are fine for my usecase. Stopped down for architecture and more open for the family shots. But again the middle between screwdrive 90s lenses and absolute state of the art is missing (in primes).

It was just an observation. When it becomes a multi post discussion it always seem more negative than the initial post because one has to flesh out all the negative sides to explain oneself.

That was part of my point.

There is a significant difference in old ff lineup. It makes no sense playing this down. They sell/sold an awful lot more gear, had more products and crucially came out with ff glass during the whole period of the last 20 years.

The switch to milc puts all that glass in a different market. That space is very sparsely populated in pentax land.

This might be good for Pentax but could squeeze pentaxians.

These new expensive lenses leave Canon and Nikon users with the option of using the vast catalogue of older dslr glass (new or used) or buying into milc for the new stuff. Pentax is in a different position as the FF catalogue is pretty slim, and for used gear very old. Our old FF glass is basically from the nineties at best. This upmarket move leaves Pentax users with less choice because of the long hold on FF glass whilst waiting for the K-1.

They both are. Make sure to compare the numbers. The graphs are scaled differently. Pentax y axis being more compressed..

Seems like most of his videos have comparisons where the focus or exposure is different. This is one of the few when its not in pentax favour.

Thats the thing, you might still get better results with the upsampled, software corrected crop than you do with a proper lens.

Completely agree that reviewers need to at least show one 'raw' example. The good ones do. I'm also aware of the downsides to relying on software. I do think it makes sense for the engineers to take software into account when designing lenses these days. It allows for different trade offs. What it doesn't do is avoid trade offs like some reviewers seem to suggest. Mirrorless aint magic.

Bigger cameras or smaller lenses?

I've come to really enjoy hefty bodies with tiny lenses but I guess that comes with the Pentax territory. Handling wise though the apsc bodies (k5/k3ii) are a better size than the K-1, the K-1 is just to thick.

Download a Leica Q2 sample and open it with RawTherapee - Home neutral settings and you're in for a treat...

Thing is though that the over all performance after digital corrections can be quite good. You can't do it with a dslr because the framing will be off. Still makes me wonder about that supposed mirrorless advantage for lens design due to register distance. So far all I can see is a whole lot of software corrections and that doesn't justify the pricing to me since those same corrections can be applied to vintage glass as well.

The question isn't if its compromised as in bad but just that the manufacturing costs should be lower. We all know that "compromised" lenses can be masterpieces. But what sets the price is manufacturing cost and branding not actual performance. Just consider the DA 35 f2.4

The thing is limiteds have cheaper optics and less rugged barrels (AW) than * glass.

They are "prettier" but these days even cheap knock off lenses have all metal construction. So its no longer an argument for high pricing. The question is then why they are expensive. Perhaps the r & d method is slow and expensive? Or is it just luxury branding.

My guess is that the high contrast light and black dress are chosen to show fringing performance. There are a lot of highlights and high contrast edges in that photo but no fringing. It's a "messy" somewhat decadent look but i does show the lens performance.

Wonder what happens when you pixelshift a lens like that. Despite having done quite a bit of pixelshift I haven't decided if good or average lenses improve the most.

I agree with that. Thats the issue when the tests aren't standardized. Makes reviews random.

The Canon 1.2 is interesting as it has more normal glass than most of the competition. The images I've seen look beautiful as well.

Haha, fitting the camera you own is an advantage for some.

It's more of a theoretical/curiosity question. People above are talking about Otus performance. If pentax achieves Otus performance with a simpler* design Zeiss engineers should go cry in the bathrooms. I think it's unlikely.

*actually not simpler just less special glass

The Pentax uses a lot less special glass than the Otus or even the Milvus. Will be interesting to see performance.

Hmm can't embed the milvus diagram for some reason. Well well direct link it is.

https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/photography/milvus/milvus-1485.html#data

Edit: That seems to be the case for the 50mm as well. But the Pentax 50 has more elements just less special ones.

Those were my initial thoughts regarding the da 11-18 as well but when I looked again at the pentaxforum review I realised that the dpreview samples could well be representative. See those photographs of metal things and most reviews show that the pf is more than the competiton.

Images from that lens have great colour and contrast but I no longer think that the dpreview copy was flawed.

This could certainly be the case for me as some of my batteries are from the K-5 days. It's interesting though why people, including myself, suspect the gps. I'm not saying the gps is not the cause.

My brain can't do cropping without viewfinder lines. It also really resists the idea of purposefully shooting wide and cropping in post. I need to see the composition before pressing the shutter. I of course crop in post sometimes but that's because I failed at the scene.
