Poll: Looking for A-F Consensus - Focus Assist Lamp content

Took numerous shots in near darkness - people around camp fires, front porch at nite, plants and flowers - down to almost -3EV...no way would the K-5 even find focus w/o the AF lamp...and with the lamp the focus has usually been fine.

Sounds like they did...seems like they had an overstock situtation, and Pentax is raising the dealer's cost on lenses.

And still confused. Confused about who posted what...
about who lied or didn't, or who attempted to make Ned (or "Ned"?) out to be a liar or didn't, or who blamed #Ned# or $Pentax$ or !Ricoh! or didn't, or who called ^Ned^ a criminal or didn't, or which perjured executives he spanked in bed or didn't, or whether "Crackle" writes his own blog, or wh...wait - what were we talking about?

Too much confusion, unverified & questionable "facts", & goofy opinion in this thread!

Back to watching movies...

Other then food and beer, I find it hard to recall the last time I bought something I actually needed. I would want 36mp 'cause it is better then 24mp. If I am going to pay for something else to play with - might as well be the best it can be - at least if its still at a somewhat reasonable price.

Now having to purchase more PC power to process all this largeness - THAT is annoying.

Yep - and Creve Coeur at least sells Pentax. Get to visit them once a year on my annual visit to the Muny.

Sure would be good for them if their prices did compete with online. Which of course is alot of what UPP is about.

Much prefer hands on shopping then mail order for this type of gear.

Ive only used AF lenses and I often have to press/hold OK to toggle the 4way between direct key operation and AF selection. Seems normal, and there several indicators to...indicate which mode the arrow buttons will be in.

I'll likely buy it whatever it is, as long as it's of k-5 quality.

Fixed the assumption, but OK.

Have not seen that...Only if what Ned said was not true and he knew it wasn't true when he blogged it...then he would be a liar. However very few here are pushing the 'Ricoh was responsible' meme.

True. Though it wouldn't & shouldn't relieve Ned of responsibility for what he says he writes there. Personally I would not go so low as to think Ned is lying about writing his own blog - now THAT is rude!

OK. Not likely, especially in this case what with Ned addressing this in a personal manner, but an OK opinion none the less. Agree that corporations can lie too (when their officers lie I suppose?).

That's fine, though in this case what Ned said was written as a statement of (supposed) fact. His belief did not come into it. His statement is either true, or not true. (And one I'm supposing he knew was true or untrue at the time he made it).

Agree.

Don't agree. {the Robo Cop scene was pretty cool though! BTW - Ned IS a real person - so no need for quotes!}

Don't agree, and a Straw Man. The real ignorance is in thinking it disingenious to hold Ned responsible for what Ned does (hence the several analogies showing otherwise). {there are those quotes again - Ned lives!}

Though possibly helpful to some - analogies, legal proceedings and corporate law did not affect what are simply personal opinions at odds in this discussion.

And so an impass.

As for me - if someone thinks what Ned posted is untrue, they could have the balls to call him on it. But if someone feels doing so would be rude because it is not really Ned's (or is that "Ned's"??) fault, so be it!

Hmmm...where do you see those things?

It actually appears many here think Ned (the person - not "Ned" the ???) actually told the truth, and Ricoh had little to do with UPP. Without any specific facts to the contrary, personally I too would tend to take him at his word.

From the beginning it was pointed out that those who would think Ricoh was responsible for the Pentax move to UPP would also be accusing Ned of a falsehood.

Read this if you are not sure about the sizes of the AF sensors. 'Focusing on the eyes' is not very likely.

The AF seems plenty fast for subjects not changing distance too much. I am in AF-S with single point most of the time, as I want to control as much as possible exactly what the camera locks on.

Naa - 1 was enough! ;)

Curious though - could a corporate officer face perjury charges in the example I mentioned? If so - I wonder who (what?) would be named as the defendant at the arraignment.

Edit: Apparently so.

"The CEOs of the seven largest U.S. tobacco companies are called to testify before the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health & the Environment. The chairman of the subcommittee, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., is incredulous that the executives still refuse to acknowledge their products are harmful – even as they admit they wouldn’t want their own children to smoke. The hearing is a public relations debacle for the tobacco industry and leads the Justice Department to launch perjury investigations against the executives."

It's just an example...for this specific discussion about Ned...of an officer of a company making a statement and that statement and the actual facts making him a liar. Legality is not an issue, and was not even being considered as a part of the real events.

OK - US federal agents raid a factory of a guitar manufacturing company and confiscate pallets of rosewood blanks, and numerous documents.

After the raid the CEO of US Guitars states on his public forum "I want to be quite clear that US Guitars was not in any way involved with buying illegal Rosewood".

And then it is proven as fact that US Guitars did indeed buy illegal Rosewood, and the CEO knew about the purchases, and that they were illegal.

It is your opinion that the CEO did not lie...US Guitars did? And that the 2 - the CEO & the corporation, should not be viewed as separate...that the CEO personally should not be identified as lying?

Seems like a rather strange stance to take. One most people would likely not agree with. If presented with this situation, I would identify the CEO a liar in a heartbeat, and not feel bad (or wrong) about it in the least. You want to add in that US Guitars lied too? Fine. They lied exactly because the CEO lied.

Edit: I wonder how the CEO would be treated in a court of law...if he made such a statement under oath. Think he personally could be charged with perjury? Or the entire company?

The statement (1ea) in question had little to do with the actual affects of UPP implementation...UPPs affect on Pentax or their customers. It has just about nothing to do with people who paid more for lenses the last 2 months. There is little harm such a statement, even if a lie, could do...other then make the liar look bad.

Which is one reason the statement in question is interesting. It was obviously Ned's intent to make it clear that Ricoh ownership had nothing to do with the move to UPP. It seems his comment was made in a way to 'protect' Ricoh - to keep them from taking the blame for Pentax move to UPP. Yet there are those who think that Ricoh not being responsible is very unlikely, which would mean Ned (et. al.) lied.

Which to me is now what makes this dicussion enticing - WHY? Why would Ned (or anyone else - be it a person or corp.;)), feel any need to make a false statement (IF they did)? What would there be to gain by 'protecting' the new ownership? Does anyone who had to pay more for a lens really care if it was Pentax or Ricoh's fault? And yet he specifically addressed this - to remove rumours that Ricoh was in any way responsible.

Edit: hmm...maybe these last bits are more of what Aristrophanes is getting at(?)

Does anyone know if Pentax got to keep patents released under Hoya's name? There were a few related to new AF modules, including one with a 5x9 array (vs what seems to be the current 3x7 array).

Not at all. NEVER said they were. In fact - I never said anything definitive one way or the other about Ricoh's responsibility..because I DO NOT KNOW. (which is why I put a lot of "IF"s in my posts)

So what do YOU know? You seem quite sure...they weren't - and THAT is the point of most of this conversation (I think).

No thanks...wouldn't even pretend to know (or care).

Obviously I agree, but let's be yet more simple and more specific so hopefully we can ALL agree:

IF what Ned wrote is wrong and he knew it, then Ned lied AND Pentax lied.

Easy, & fine with me.

So, back to the real discussion - did Pentax lie, or not? More to the point - how responsible was the Ricoh ownership in Pentax going to UPP? For what ever reason, Ned made a statement to remove any notion that Ricoh ownership was responsible. Why? Why would he/Pentax lie, if it wasn't true? What would be the point?

I read something about facts up above (facts - not evidence or conjecture)...so what are they?
