I just came across this from Adorama. It's in the top three cameras for image quality and the author rated it excellent at all ISO's.

Pentax news - nobody cares but us?

That makes sense. Canon does it opposite as well as Nikon, Fuji and Sony. That's why I was thinking the other way. It really doesn't matter to me as long as the camera is an upgrade. After I read more on the threads, I answered my own qusetion. lol I do have a question about the k-5. Does it have a video button or is it accessed from a menu? I like the idea of a button for turning it on and off. I didn't think I so on the pics I came across.

Has anyone heard if the K-5 will have it's own video mode button or will you have to access the video through a menu? I haven't had time to read the whole thread so I thought I would ask. I'll read the thread when I have more time. I would appreciate it, if anyone knows, if they could let me know. Thanks

That's why I said I will probably keep my Sony. I like both systems. The main fault I have with Sony is their direction they want to go. For the past year, it seemed like they were leaving the advanced level and only going to make entry level cameras. Like I've read about Pentax, I think the way they advertise and market to the pro level is lacking. For a while I didn't think they were going to replace the 700 but recently there are rumours that it will happen at Photokina. They have come out with new models lately but still not a 700 replacement. The problem with Sony is they don't seem to listen to the users of their products. I am thinking lately that the reason the 7xx hasn't come out is because they are redesigning it to be an awesome replacement. The new model's preorders have sold out in some areas so I think they are getting back on track. They do make good cameras and if they look like they will be in it for the long haul, more people will stay with them. You can't invest a lot of money in the system if they won't be there to support you in the future. That's why I am waiting to see what both Pentax and Sony offer during the next year before I actually buy my next camera.
Pentax seemed to be on shaky ground for a while but I think they are turning things around. They listen to their users a little more than Sony does I think. They are heading in the right direction IMO. Eventually I think they will also have FF but their APS-C cameras are built well enough to keep them going in the near future. They will move to FF when the time is right financially. These are just my opinions from what I have been reading.
As far as technical reasons I would buy a Pentax:
1) Weather resistant body
2) The best Auto WB in a camera (this includes all companies)
3) Prime lenses
4) Price
5) In body stabilization (I would not go to Canikon)
6)ability to adjust front/back focus (Sony only has this in their $2000 and up models)
7)Ability to use older glass (Sony took this away on most models but brought it back on the latest one)
8) Camera is built solid (Sony is a little plasticky in this department)if that's a word. lol
9) 7 to 8 FPS (without having to put it in a certain mode to use it)
10) Video for when you need it (Sony has just started to put it in their cameras)
All of these things could be easily put in the new 7xx model from Sony so we will have to wait and see. I really think it will be a good camera but two of the most important things to me are the prime glass and the Auto WB. Those are two things Sony is behind in making.
I think the biggest thing that would help both companies take part of the Canikon market is proper marketing and availability. You can't find a Pentax in ANY store where I live and Sony is limited to two models in Best Buy and Wolf Camera. You have to put the cameras out there for people to try if you want to sell them, otherwise they will pick up a Canon or Nikon which are available everywhere(even Walmart). Pentax was in Walmart at one time. A lot of entry level shoppers buy at Walmart. If you start out with a Pentax, you might move up to a higher model when you out grow it. My point is they should be available in more places than they are currently or the general public will never hear about how good they are. Walmart would be a good place to start along with some camera stores. Walmart is in almost every town. Best buy would also be another good place. Wolf Camera would be another. Just my opinion. They also need some marketing on TV and magazines. People have to know they exist!

I started out as a Canon user in the 80's. I switched to Nikon in the 90's but always had my eye on a Pentax 6x7. I wanted one really bad but never was in the position financially to buy it. My career changed and I ended up putting photography on the back burner for a while. When digital came along, my interest came back and I wanted to put my photography degree to use again. I went with Fuji because I already had the Nikon glass. I had the S2 camera and it was great for the time and what I was doing. Now I am at the position of switching systems and have bought a Sony a700 and a few lenses. Since I switched to Sony, I have been watching Pentax closely. I haven't invested a lot into Sony yet but I do like my camera. If Pentax releases something soon that really suits my needs, I would switch in a minute. I almost did it with the K-7 but the rumours started flying about a replacement. The K-7 has almost all the features I need but I've heard about the ISO issue and I am hoping that will be fixed in the new models. My question is- Is the K-5 the replacement for the K-7 or will there be a K-8?
I like the look of the Pentax line and the prices aren't really that bad compared to others. The fact that there are several prime lenses is one thing that attracts me to Pentax. The weatherproofing and in body stabilization is also a plus. One thing that is VERY important is the ability to adjust for back/front focus. Other lines don't offer this except for their higher priced models. To have this in a camera like the K-7 is awesome! Pentax users should be proud of their cameras and spread the word to the rest of the world. They have a lot to offer.
Although I really like my Sony, I will probably buy a Pentax within the next year. I'm just trying to decide which model I want. I may end up keeping my current camera system too. Variety is a plus! BTW I'm not a fanboy of any brand. I think they all have something good to offer. It just depends on what you need in a system and who has it when you need it.
Do you think there is another camera coming after the K-5? Like a K-8? The only reason I'm asking is because the Number of the model is less K-5 instead of K-8 but the specs look like it is an upgrade to the K-7. I just wanted to verify that the 5 is an upgrade for the 7.

"Contrasting". Complementary colors are Opposites on the color wheel. I think some people may not know this. When somoene says complementary, some assume that it means colors that go together or something. It actually means colors that are opposites but they compliment each other. Here is a link that describes it in detail and includes a color wheel. I'm not trying to be a smart a@# here, just trying to help those that may not know. :) There are some very good entries. Good luck to everyone!

If not, I think the "Song Titles" would be a fun challenge. You would have to use your mind first.

Question about image quality of the k-7

I use a WB target that has Black, white and gray on one side to set your exposure. The other side is solid white to set the White balance. Since I started using this, my colors look great (including reds). With flowers this type of target works well because they are not moving into different light. It helps if the color is correct when the exposure is made and you do minimal adjustments in the computer. There are several WB targets on the market including the kind you use like a lens cap.
Find what works best for you but I recommend getting it right in the camera first. I use my target with portraits every time and the color comes out great now. You have to remember when working outside to take another reading if you move. Light color changes just a few feet away. If you go from sun to shade or near an object that is reflecting color. I use custom white balance most of the time when I sell my work. The only time I use auto is for snapshots.
I have heard the K-7 and K-x has the most accurate auto WB around. I don't own one yet but maybe when I do, I can leave my target home.
Hope this helps.

I agree about the FF market. The reason most people don't own one is the price. The reason I bought a Sony and the reason I am buying FF lenses to use on my a700 is the hopes I will be able to afford a FF body some day. I almost bought a 850 when it came out but it was still a little too much right now. Price is the only reason I don't have one. If the price was lower, I think many APS-C owners would already have one. If Pentax comes out with a FF, I will be switching from Sony. I am already considering it when the K-7 upgrade comes out. Right now Pentax offers some things that Sony doesn't. I haven't invested a lot in the Sony system yet. I'm holding off until I see what comes out later this year. I just think price is the main reason more people don't have a FF with any manufacturer.

My ideal system would be a FF camera as my main camera and a APS-C camera as my back-up when I need more reach. Lenses to fit both so I can interchange them between the two.

If the 645D was cheaper, I would like to have one of those too.

I remember when I graduated from Ohio Institute of Photography in 1987, I wanted a Pentax 6X7 or a Mamiya RZ. They taught us a professional used those over a 35mm. If you used a 35mm, you were an amateur. I couldn't afford one of the "pro" cameras then and still can't. The 645 digital is still out of reach for me and now so is the 35mm (FF). Things sure have changed. FF is now considered professional. I don't agree with all that anyway. You can be a professional with a APS-C camera. The quality is up there now. You don't have to spend $8,000 for a camera to be a pro. It is all in how you use the camera that is in front of you. Sure the high priced cameras have some features that the cheaper ones don't have but how many times do you need ISO 100,000+ ? Sometimes I think everyone worries about what their camera doesn't have instead of what it does have and taking it out and making some great images. I am one of those people I guess. There has to be some point when all of the cameras will be equal. They will run out of new things to add to them. Once the ISO and megapixels go as far as they can, what will happen then? Hopefully they will start lowering the prices to sell more cameras. That's when I will own a FF. :D

Aliquis,
Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't know FA meant that. So Pentax is not as far behind in that area as I thought. A FF camera could be on the horizon. That would make me really consider switching. The only other thing was how stable is the company financially? Sounds like they are heading in the right direction.

I think most of Tokina's current line-up is for digital. I just bought a couple of Tokina's for my Sony. I bought the older 28-80 and 80-200. They are full frame PRO ATX and built really well but I think their newer lenses will probably control flare a little better than mine do. I hope they do come out with a few more. They are very nice lenses but very heavy. The only problem I am having is the flare but these were made for film, not digital. You have to expect some. I am having a slight back focus issue. That is another plus for the K-7. If I had it, I could correct the problem.

That is the one I am waiting on. I switched to Sony and although I am happy with the camera I bought, I am sort of puzzled by their new releases. I switched from Fuji/Nikon. Fuji stopped making pro cameras at least for now. It seems like Sony keeps removing features on every new camera that comes out so I have my eye on Pentax. I haven't really invested a lot in Sony yet so I can change rather easily. I was going to buy a k-7 but this talk of a sucessor has made me wait. It will be interesting to see what Pentax and Sony both have later this year. The only reason I am looking at those two is the in camera stabilization. My guess will be the Pentax will be the better of the two. Weather resistant camera and the prime lens line up are just two of the things that I like. I am hoping the high ISO noise gets corrected and the video ends up being more like Canon's video with the different speeds available. I would also like a bigger camera than the K-7. It is a little small for my hands. Other than that, the K-7 is already a great camera. I have a feeling they will gain several Sony users soon if Sony stays on the same path they are on now. If Pentax comes out with a FF camera, I know some of them will switch. I will be one of them for sure.:)

Just a thought though...If they make a FF camera, won't they have to make a new line of lenses? Are the lenses that they have now made for FF also? If they have to make a new line of glass, we probably won't see a FF camera for a while.

I wish I could order one of those. I will be watching your site. I'm confused about the price here in the US. I thought it was going to be around $10,000.00 but I have also read $20,000.00. I think there may have been some confusion in converting the money to US Dollars. I am hoping it will be the first price. Does anyone know for sure?

K7 vs. Kx vs. just wait...

I am more of a professional though so I am either going to buy the K-7 or wait until the new one comes out. Probably the latter because I still have my Sony for now. I would always recommend buying the most advanced camera you can afford. You can always learn how to use it but if you buy one that doesn't have the features you may want in the future, you will then have to upgrade. That comes sooner than you think. Get the best camera you can afford at the time. Like someone said earlier, you can always use it in GREEN mode while you are learning. The k-7 would be my choice unless you can wait until the fall to see if a new one comes out. If you have something to occupy your time until like trying out your Dad's camera :), wait for the new one.
Pentax has a lot of great glass and that is one reason I am looking at Pentax. The K-7 has a lot of great features. I agree with what one of the replies stated. How much does the average person shoot with high ISO's? 90 % of the time my camera stays on ISO 100. The k-7 is great for what I do. RAW shooting does make a difference with noise. You can make your own adjustments instead of letting the camera do it. It all comes down to the type of photography you do. If you use it in a studio like I do, you won't have to worry about the ISO noise. You just have to think about how use your camera and buy the best you can afford. Learning how to use an advanced camera is the fun part now that you don't have to worry about film. Isn't digital great!

If the new camera comes out in September, that will be within your six month timeframe.

I am going to start looking for a good deal. I was going to sell my Sony but I think I will keep it too. If I end up liking the Pentax better, I will sell the Sony then. I love my Sony but I am questioning their future. The Sony has great skin tones but I really like the Pentax lens line-up. I like the weather sealing on the camera and lenses.

I took these with a different camera (Fuji S-2). These were straight from the camera. The boy was a TIF File and the girl was a JPG file. If the K-7 does as good as this, I would be happy. I'm not as picky now since I am photographing mostly pets but sometimes I have the owner in the photo too. Do you think the skin colors are as good as these? I am not saying these are my best ones, I just picked two really quick that were handy. I just don't like the sunburned look. Sometimes my S-2 would do that on outdoor photos. They would have a pink tint until I bought a calibration target and that solved most of the problem.

I think I resized them too small. I see pixels....oops!

Hello. I'm new to this forum and Pentax. I'm Paul by the way. I photograph pets and portraits of people. I am thinking of buying a K-7 and was wondering if anyone has some photos of people so I can how the skin tones look. I would like to see both outdoor and studio shots. I am impressed by this camera from what I have read and just wasn't sure about the skin tones. I have been on the Pentax Image Gallery to look at photos. If anyone could do this, I would really appreciate it. I thought this would be the best way to see what I am looking for. Ask the people that use the camera every day. Also let me know if the photo was taken under daylight or strobe. I would really like to see a straight out of the camera sample too. Thanks for your help....Paul:)
