Most used lens for Landscapes?
Posted By hcc
Replies: 32

On my K-3iii, the D-FA21mm f2.4 is my main lens for landscape now. On a FF K-1, the F31mm f1.8 would be the corresponding lens. I have both and the FA31mm can be strongly recommended IMHO.
Hope that the comment may help.

+1 for the factory reset.

Take off the battery for 24 h. Recharge the battery fully. (If you could, check the battery hold its voltage, because this could be another source of issues.) After 24 h, re-insert the battery and restart the camera.

K-7 iso setting

Glad that you found the issue.
The K-7 is a great camera IMO and still give great shots at low ISO, especially when paired with a good fast prime lens. I continue to use my K-7 as a 2nd backup, and I nearly always use it with a prime, like FA31mm f1.8, FA77mm f1.8 or Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4.
While many people complained about the less-than-adequate performances at high ISO (i..e above ISO 800), the camera has a superb body (re-sued with the K-5, K-5ii, K-3, K-3ii and even K-3iii) and a nice optical viewfinder. The ergonomy was outstanding IMHO.
Enjoy your K-7....

Voigtländer lenses with Pentax K1 Mark II

Voigtlander lenses with K-mount can be obtained 2nd hand from the Forum market place and the Bay, as well as a number of Japanese (and Korean) sellers. Some lenses (e.g. Nokton 58mm) have two versions. The version II is preferable IMHO.

I have three Voigtlander lenses: 58mm, 90 mm and 125mm. The Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4 is my favorite lens in many poor-light situations, while the Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 is the best macro lenses that I ever used. Honestly, both lenses are fabulous and well worth their prices. BTW both VL 58mm and 125mm are FF and would work great on the K-1.

I cannot comment on the other Voigtlander (eg 40 mm), but most Voigtlander lenses have a great reputation.

Hope that the comment may help.

+1 +1 +1
The D-FA21mm f2.4 is absolutely astonishing IMO:
The D-FA21mm controls my mind - PentaxForums.com

I use mine on APS-C camera body (K-3iii), and it would work as well on FF camera bodies (K-1, K-1iii).

Sorry to hear your problem.
Another suggestion: try to reset all parameters of the camera settings. If this does not work out, then do a hard camera reset: remove the battery for 24 h minimum, charge 100% the battery, and after more than 24 h (preferably 48 h), re-insert the battery and restart the camera.
Hope that this might help....

I continue to use Pentax battery of my K-7 after more than 12 years and it continue to retain "juice" longer than 3rd party batteries. My rant: I found that 3rd battery batteries (I have two) tends to stop very suddenly, without warning, compared to the Pentax original batteries.
My 5 cents...

Could any settings inadvertently been input (in the camera body) caused this? Is it worth to consider a camera body reset?

Pentax Lens Recommendations For Close-Up Portraiture.

For portrait, the FA77mm f1.8 Ltd is a fantastic lens. I own a K-7, K-3 and K-3ii, and I continue to use the K-7 with high-grade lens like the FA77mm.
The FA7mm is much loved in this Forum and was once called the "best (autofocus) lens that money can buy" across all brands : sm-02-05-02 - Luminous Landscape.
There is no doubt that newer dSLR outperforms the K-7, and that the K-7 is not great at high ISO (ISO 800 and above) IMHO. But, at low ISO, I continue to love the K-7 rendering, especially with the FA77mm.
I hope that the comment may help

Pentax k-50 - issue with Pentax 18-250 lens

Could this be the dreaded "Pentax Lens 18-250 Lock jammed" with the lens stucked at 18mm?
In the affirmative, there is a simple fix that anyone can do with a small screwdriver IMHO. (Even me, I am a handy person and I repaired my DA18-250mm.) See the thread: Pentax Lens 18-250 Smc. Lock button jamed - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com. This thread should be a "Sticky" one in relation to the DA18-250mm IMHO.
Hope that this could help others....

What lens - zoom around 300mm

I noted that one need for the OP is being "portable", in addition to FF.
I will suggest a solution consisting of the Pentax FA*300mm f4.5 and a TC (e.g 1.4). The FA*300mm f4.5 is a great FF 300 mm lens, relatively light and easily handled by hand. When I use it, I often bring my HD DA TC1.4x. This gives me two focal lengths (300 mm and 420mm) with great IQ and light weight. I am very happy with the combo.
I appreciate that the Pentax HD DA TC1.4x is not FF, and other PF members might suggest alternative FF TC.
I hope that the suggestion may help.

On the D-FA21mm f2.4 Ltd...

There have been many threads on the DA15mm f4 Ltd lens, including title like "The DA15mm controls my mind". Having the DA15mm Ltd myself, as well as the DA10-17mm (fisheye), and now the D-FA21mm f2.4 Ltd, I would now argue that "the D-FA21mm controls my mind". Why and how?

I recently purchased both a K-3iii and a D-FA21mm f2.4 Ltd. The first purchase was a no-brainer because my K-3 was now 8 years old. Still a good camera body IMHO but .... The second purchase was a LBA, in part linked to the in-depth review here at PF :) {https://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax-d-fa-fa-21mm-f24-ed-limited-dc-wr/introduction.html}.

For the past 4-5 weeks, I have been travelling in Europe with my new K-3iii, my new D-FA21mm Ltd, my older FA77mm f1.8 Ltd and my 'old reliable' DA18-250mm as an all-round lens. And I shot over 2,000 shots. Let me first summarise a few key points from this experience when I have shot a lot of actions (incl. surfers) and landscape (sunny, rany, windy).

+The DA18-250mm is under-performing with the K-3iii. Or I should say the K-3iii over-perform the DA18-250mm. Not completely surprising IMO, but I did not expect by so much.

+ The FA77mm Ltd was my reference lens from the start. It is fabulous for portrait, as well as landscape. It was once called "The Best (Autofocus) Lenses Money Can Buy" {http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-02-05-02.shtml}. Here, no disappointment. The FA77mm Ltd performs very nicely on the K-3iii. I used it mostly for landscape incl. at sunset and sunrise: outstanding! The FA77mm Ltd is not the sharpest lens but its rendering is truly outstanding incl. with the K-3iii.

+ The D-FA21mm was a stunner with the K-3iii. Beyond my expectations. I cannot believe that nearly 50% of my shots were taken with D-FA21mm. And for the past 2 weeks, the D-FA21mm has been nearly always on the K-3iii.

When I prepared my lenses for this trip, I planned that I would use the DA18-250mm for 50% of time, the FA77mm Ltd for 35% and the D-FA21mm for the rest. I was wrong! So wrong! My usage was been the D-FA21mm for 50% of shots, the FA77mm Ltd for 40% of time and the DA18-250mm for the rest.

More I found that the combo D-FA21mm and FA77mm Lts is a superb combo on the K-3iii. Some would argue that a 17-70mm zoom lens would be more convenient. No! I would not compromise and I think that the D-FA21mm/FA77mm Ltd is the perfect combo on the K-3iii, for what I am shooting right now.

Off course, nothing is perfect. The weather in Europe is generally nice and I had very little fogg/smoke/smogg. Under such tricky conditions, I would still prefer to use my trusted Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4: "extra-ordinary (IMHO) in poor lighting conditions" {https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/209251-fa3...mm-f1-4-a.html}.

In summary: "the D-FA21mm controls my mind". No doubt right now. It becomes my favorite prime lens for now!

For a hard reset, remove the battery for 24 h, charge the battery to full. and restart the camera 24 h later.
There is also a way to reset the setting using the LCD screen, but this would be of no use in this situation.
How old is your K-70? Still under warranty?

Hope that the above suggestion may help

The K-7 is still a nice camera at low ISO, paired with a good fast prime lens IMO. It is now my 3rd body and I will still love the colour and rendering of the K-7 at low ISO (up to 400 ISO, but better at 100 ISO), especially with my FA31 mm Ltd f1.8, FA77 Ltd f1.8 and Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4.
I love the body of the K-7. And the OF.

My K-3iii and K-3 are better overall, but at low ISO the K-7 holds its ground IMHO.
Hope that the comment may help.
