For front to back sharpness, maybe also focus stacking? (Something I haven't tried yet.)

I agree Jonathan. We do tend to obsess about sharpness, but it all depends on the context.

At normal viewing size and given their proportion of the frame, the subjects in this shot looks sharp enough. Particularly compared to the OOF people in the background - in other words, you got good subject separation.

I guess many people who fave an image in Explore just do so from viewing on the Explore page - they don't even open it, let alone magnify it.

Doesn't have to be on a farm to be a farm animal.

Interesting photo Rod It seems to cry out for a caption, but I can't think of one. Hmm .. "Should be a better hookup on Tinder than this one."

Welcome to PF, Susan, from country Victoria.

Some of the best and most knowledgeable photographers on this forum are from SA, including Sandy and Digitalis who posted above.

There are very few retailers in Australia who stock Pentax gear. But you can buy new gear online from Pentax Australia (run by the authorised distributor C R Kennedy) or from the ebay store DCxpert (dcxpert | eBay Stores). Orders with DCxpert are fulfilled by C R Kennedy, and you get the full official warranty. Sale prices and ebay discounts mean that prices are often better on DCXpert.

Secondhand gear can be found on Gumtree or ebay, but it's a bit of a lottery. Retailers in Japan are often reliable suppliers. The other place to look is the PF marketplace.

I have a K-S2 as well. It's a very capable camera. You are welcome to post photos with it in this thread: Post your K-S2 Shots Here - PentaxForums.com

There is a helpful introductory video for the K-S2 here:

You Tube

I'd also recommend getting the ebook: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/donations/?ebooks=1&loginrequired=1#sub42

As you probably know, the K-S2 is susceptible to the failure of a solenoid in the mechanism which controls the aperture. The usual first symptom is that images sometimes come out too dark. Here's how to check whether you have the problem: How to detect aperture block failure on Pentax K-S1 (and K-S2) - PentaxForums.com
If it happens, there is a cheap DIY fix (Manual: Solenoid replacement: Pentax K-S2 (and K-70) - PentaxForums.com) or you can get it repaired by CRK (it cost me around $175). The best way to stave off this problem is to use the camera regularly. I never had a problem with mine until I lent it to a family member and it sat unused for 18 months. Since the repair it's as good as new.

Enjoy the camera.

Japan Amazon offering K70 kit? for a newbie

Welcome to PF.

I can't comment on the particular deal but I would make a few observations:
1. Let's assume the deal includes a Ricoh-Pentax warranty. It is unlikely to cover service outside Japan. You would still have to send it back to Ricoh Japan for service/repair/replacement if you have a problem. That could more than eat up any savings on the purchase price. I bought one camera that didn't have a local (Australian) warranty. Fortunately I didn't have a problem with it, but I would never do it again.
2. The two kit lenses are OK, but won't give you full value from using a DSLR. The K-70 is often sold packaged with a Pentax DA 18-135mm f3.5-5.6. That is a much better starter kit. It is also more convenient for travel as it involves fewer lens changes. The K-70 is also sometimes bundled with a Pentax DA 35mm f2.4 or DA 50mm f1.8, whose excellent image quality belies their low cost and plastic construction. If you want a telephoto lens as well, I would suggest a Pentax DA 55-300mm f4.5-6.3 PLM (not the DA 50-200). This is a really good lens. It is also sometimes bundled with the K-70. You can read user reviews and PF staff reviews of all these lenses by following the links here: Pentax Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database Buying a new lens in a bundle with the camera is usually a lot cheaper.
3. Although you are familiar with a film SLR, there is a bit of a learning curve with a DSLR. If your trip to Japan is a vacation, I'd suggest buying the camera and getting familiar with it before you go. Trying to learn to use the camera after you arrive in Japan is not a recipe for a happy holiday or satisfying photography.
4. Whether you buy before you go or not, start reading up now.
- There is a lot of helpful information in the PF review of the K-70: Pentax K-70 Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews
- The manual and starter guide can be downloaded from Ricoh: Operation Manuals Download : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING
- I'd strongly suggest getting the excellent ebook written by the late lamented PF member Yvon Bourque: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/donations/?ebooks=1&loginrequired=1#sub42
- There is a wealth of other useful information on the PF site.
5. For second-hand K-mount lenses, Japan is regarded as a treasure-trove. Dealers generally have a good reputation. Other members can suggest places to go if you are interested.

The Golden Ratio: Is it misunderstood by many photography writers?

Thanks very much Mark. Very interesting and informative.

There seems to be a push-back against retrospective analysis of art, architecture and nature based on the GR, or what this author calls "spurious correlations": https://plus.maths.org/content/myths-maths-golden-ratio

Yes. The other aesthetically pleasing element is the position and alignment of her hands, at a similar distance from the edge to her face and creating a roughly horizontal line balancing the roughly vertical line of her face (as well as a triangle and perhaps other geometric forms). I'm not sure that the GR spiral captures what is pleasing about that. The spiral in the image on the left starts at her right thumb which doesn't seem like a focal point at all. Which is presumably why the second and third images distort the painting to try to make the spiral fit.

Burnt out on photography?

Absolutely. I think the improvements in in-camera high-ISO and in PP software in the last few years have been a quiet revolution. I'd suggest trying out programs with AI noise reduction, like Topaz or DxO PhotoLab (Elite edition). You should be able to get consistently good results with the K-3ii at 1600 and you can use 3200 or even 6400 where necessary.

I've been going back over some old shots I took with the K-3. As an extreme example, here's one I took in very poor light (well after sunset) at 6400 ISO, and even then it was underexposed by at least a couple of stops. (The koala was on our property - something pretty special.) So effectively something like 25000. OOC jpg (I was shooting RAW+)

After re-processing the RAW file with DxO PL5 with DeepPrime and Nik Color Efex Pro

I wouldn't choose to use these settings, and it's far from ideal - but it shows what can be done when the need arises.

This should help you overcome your aversion to floating ISO! I am one of those who mostly uses TAv. With the KP I generally cap the ISO at 3200, unless I need to go higher. With the K-3 I capped it at 1600 by default. At 400 ISO or 800 ISO there isn't much compromise at all.

One thing I got from the lockdowns was improving my PP skills. I spent some time watching video tutorials, which was invaluable. I recommend Robin Whalley's tutorials, which cover a number of popular PP programs.

I also recommend trying the Nik Collection, especially Color Efex Pro and Silver Efex Pro. (You can still get the free Google version if you don't want to buy the DxO one - there's not much difference.) There are some excellent DxO tutorials on YouTube (Nik Collection - YouTube). It works as a plug-in with other programs. So process as you normally would, then export as TIFF and take it from there in the relevant Nik program.

When photo ops are limited (as they are for me at present), you can go back and re-process old photos. There are nuggets to be found in the mine. B&W conversions are worth trying too.

Do these seem reasonably sharp?

Given the proportion of the frame that the barn occupies, I'd say resolution is OK. The M 135mm f3.5 has a lot of fans, but it would be interesting to compare a modern zoom at 135mm. I suspect that there would be more resolution and less aberrations.

If the barn really is 500 yards away, the image must be cropped a fair bit. If so, resolution is quite good.

If it is not cropped, I can't see that the barn could be 500 yards away. In that case, resolution is OK, but nothing special. I would expect as good or better with the DA 18-135 at 135mm.

KP or K3 ii?

The KP is well built and feels solid. It uses a stepper motor for aperture control, so no risk of aperture block failure. It doesn't have the same rated shutter life as the K-3 series (100k v 200k), but I suspect that some users will have chalked up more than 100,000 actuations by now without a problem. One thing to note is that a number of PF members have reported the mode dial breaking. You have to press a release button in the middle of the dial before turning it (frankly I find it a nuisance and preferred the lock lever on the K-3); it can break if you don't press it enough. Just something to be aware of.

^ My experience too (using a K-3 and KP). I sold the K-3 after a while because the KP was so much better - AF, metering, high ISO, tilt screen, third wheel, electronic shutter, etc, etc. I liked the feel of the K-3 more, the faster burst rate and bigger battery, but that was about it.
