Looking for photo editor that can edit .pef files without duplication

raw files are to digital photography, what the film negative are to analogue photography. A raw file by itself is the start of the process. The end of the process is an image file (which any raw format is not).

So if you start with a raw file and want to post it on the web, you need to make it into a jpeg.... or less favourably another web friendly image format.

if you start with a raw file and want to print it, most consumer printing companies require jpeg. Some high -end printers for commercial work require TIFF. No one wants raw files because they are not image files.

What do you want to do with your end-product image ?

Where have all the f/3.5-4.5 zooms gone?

I think also in the age of cleaner higher ISO and shake reduction, the need for a faster aperture at long zoom is negated. Sure you may be losing 3/4 of a stop in terms of DOF, but the difference between 4.5 and 5.6 is pretty small.

The Nikon D850 is a much more expensive camera, about 1/3 more than the K1-II.

As I said earlier, software processing has overtaken the need for more MP in-camera. 36MP is plenty unless you are printing extremely large images. For online posting/viewing even 36MP is overkill. A modern 4K screen can only display 8MP !

No idea. But I always ask this follow up question.... What does a 36MP FF camera like the K-1 II not have, that anyone would need ?

The MP race ended a number of years ago in my view. The game is now all about processing software....Super resolution et al.

Question about an old SMC M 35-70mm F2.8-3.5 lens

I also own this lens and agree it is possible to establish where the lens changes its widest aperture by putting it on a camera and taking a meter reading.

Note that this affects the entire aperture range, not just wide open. So at 35mm the lens is a f2.8-f22 lens. At 70mm the lens is a f3.5-f28 lens. that is why there are two aperture markers...one in red and one in green.

Pentax-A 15mm 1:3.5 focus helicoid adjustment?

I own the "K" version of this lens (optically identical) and it is certainly a lovely bit of kit to work with. However if you are expecting the whole frame to be equally sharp, you are going to be disappointed, The edges will be noticeably softer than the centre. Having said that, there is something going wrong with your image. The edges should not be "that" soft !

Can you link to an image on a site like Flickr, so we can see a full size image (unfortunately posting directly is no good as the forum resizes).

I suggest checking the infinity focus using Live View, magnified 100%. Same for closer objects. This will help to rule out a simple mis-focus. It is quite possible the lens has been dropped or taken apart and not reassembled correctly.

I took this image with the K 15mm 3.5 at f8 The edges are perfectly acceptable. Like sblake above, I just use hyperfocal distance with f8 and rarely try to actually focus the lens itself.

But can you tell that objects in the far distance (infinity) are not in focus? The lens has such a wide DOF, and such a wide angle (small subject size) that I would find it hard to trust CIF.

Using LV zoomed 100% may help confirm your findings.

I have often thought about getting a Ricoh GR III for trips where I don't want to carry the K1 with me, but smart-phones have become so advanced now I think I will stick with that as my alternate.

Anyway I have created a folder on Dropbox containing the .bin file and the readme. I will send you a PM with the link.

Format the SD card in camera.

You need to paste the .bin file to your SD card. If double clicking the .exe file is not allowing you to extract the .bin file try right clicking the .exe file and choose "run as administrator" or open.

The best way to get the .bin file onto the SD card is to use a card reader.

ps Welcome to the forum.

Former Electric Control Centre for British Rail. A group of ex engineers/volunteers keep it going and it is open to the public once a year. It operated from 1936 until 1997.
