Pentax glass is great!

One of my favorite parts about Pentax has been this forum, both with the ability to asks questions and also the marketplace. Is there any similar forum and/or marketplace for Sony users? I just bought a used a6500 and before I even bought any native glass I bought a pentax adapter for it. It was kind of challenging to figure out which one has an aperture ring on it, because I am hoping to adapt a few newer lenses without an aperture ring. Which adapter do you use?

Has anyone had any trouble with the front element of certain sigma's separating and creating little pockets of air? Is there any fix for this?

Thank you

I'm interested in either iteration of this Sigma lens. Haven't exactly seen the advantages to having OS in lens on a pentax body though, maybe you can convince me.

Wide Angle Lenses

I am interested in beginning landscape and architecture photography, and also the occasional indoor (badly lit) group photo where all signs of distortion are completely eliminated. The lenses I have been looking into are the Pentax 10-17 fisheye and the Sigma 10-20 - I can get a used Sigma f3.5 HSM version for about $270, and a new Pentax lens for $300.

The main reason I am opposed to the Sigma is the lack of return policy. My main objections to the Pentax is the silent af and the variable aperture. I like the creative options the fisheye effect can have when desired, but also need reliable rectilinear performance for the rare group shots I take.

Is the distortion of each lens correctable in PS or LR, and which lens allows for highest sharpness at the largest aperture? Which will better suit my needs and are there any other lenses, preferably af but not necessarily, that might be a better option?

K3 ii Auto Focus with Sports

[/LIST] I recently got the da* 60-250 f4, and I have been losing my mind over the same back focusing issues. After trying nearly every combination of auto focus setting and AF fine tune adjustments, I think I finally have the correct formula for shooting figure skating with my K-3 II.

First of all, I stop the lens down to f5.6 to give the focal plane a bit more wiggle room. I can't wait for the Pentax 70-200 2.8 to come out so I can gain that extra stop of aperture, but until then, I use around ISO 1600 which seems to produce a negligible amount of noise that is easily removable in ACR.

Next, af.c is fairly decent on this lens/body combination. Using 9 point focus will very often find the contrast in the background before the actual subject I am trying to shoot, so I have learned to use only the center point which has produced many more usable in-focus shots. I have my AF button on the back of the camera set to disable AF when pressed, thus I am able to center the subject to gain focus, then press the AF button and move the subject anywhere in the frame and still retain focus. I strongly recommend this method, in conjunction with the half-pressed shutter button for AF to quickly take shots as soon as the subject is moved to proper position.

I also have high priority af turned on, though I am really not sure how much this actually helps when using the single spot focusing.

This may or may not be relevant to you, but I have +4 AF fine tuning on just this lens. It seems to help with fast motion, but I think it may just be my copy of this lens.

I hope any of this helps you, I know how frustrating it is to find faults in either the expensive gear or the technique, but keep practicing and experimenting and most importantly - learning! Here are some pictures - the exif data should help better clarify some things I mentioned

K-3 II Sensor Cleaning

I bought the camera used, as an upgrade to my K-S2. I was digging in the menu and found the dust alert setting which does not exist on the k-s2. It showed a fair amount of sensor dust, and being the novice I am, I tried to use a cue tip with some lens solution on it (which I saw being used on a lynda.com tutorial). I definitely don't have top quality lens solution, so I believe it left streaks on the sensor because now the dust alert function shows even more marks on the sensor.

I am going to try using my rocket blaster, but just wanted to see what my options were because I really don't want to put the sensor at any more risk. The o-ick stick, in my opinion, doesn't look like it would really work for the streaks I mentioned before, plus it looks rather scary to use.

Thank you everyone!

K-3 II Sensor Cleaning

I am looking to buy some supplies to clean my sensor, cannot find information about the k-3 ii sensor anywhere and am wondering if it has the exact same sensor as the K-3. I particularly want to know if it has the tin oxide coating so I know which type of cleaning solution to buy. Also, wondering if anyone has any experience using the digital survival kit with type 3 sensor swabs. I read somewhere that they work with either aps-c or ff sensors and for some reason they are a lot cheaper on amazon than type 2 which is what the brand recommends for aps-c sensors. Any help is appreciated!

Pentax 60-250 vs Sigma 50-500

Only under perfect, bright sun would a lens as slow as this yield any positive results, and it would be useless for indoor sports. Shooting at speeds between 1/320th and 1/800th, you really need all the aperture you can get. Even in a bright, reflective ice rink I have trouble at f4, without the ISO completely taking away clean edges and blurring eyes and brow together.

Join the club, haha!

I do think the WR helps considerably with condensation, but the only lens I have without WR is my grandfather's old minolta lens from the 70s which did experience a lot of moisture build up when I left the rink.

The long lens hood should help some with rain and drops on the front element, but I really wouldn't have any lens out in a total downpour or even a heavy mist for too long.

I, too, have problems getting close, wide shots when the action is happening directly in front. I have considered getting another body with a wide angle prime lens for close ups and afterward to take portraits.

Pentax 60-250 vs Sigma 50-500

I shoot indoor figure skating with the 60-250, which is an upgrade from the 50-200 f/4-5.6 - almost zero difference in range. When using the 60-250, the range difference is barely noticeable from the 200mm mark to the 250mm one. The autofocus isn't the fastest but it does an alright job. I would definitely trade the last 50mm for the extra aperture speed your Tamron offers, but I am not sure how well it would do in the cold ice rink. I'm holding out for the FA* Pentax 70-200 2.8 this February. My advice would probably be to get or rent a teleconverter and see if that gets you what you're after.

While I wouldn't say I'm am expert, I do know shooting in manual or aperture mode doesn't matter when determining the type of focusing you use. AF stands for auto focus which is separate from drive modes such as auto, Scene, or manual modes. Read your lens and camera manual for more about auto focusing

Here are some of my shots using the K-S2 with either the 18-50 1:4-5.6 or the 50-200 1:4-5.6. I haven't looked at any from a K-50, I sort of just jumped right into the S2 because of all the additional features like wifi and interval. I find that I hardly, if ever, use most of them - the best being the tilting screen. If I could make the choice again, I wouldn't concentrate as much on these, and perhaps would look more into a camera with more lens choices. It seems like there are very few good lenses available under $600. Just thought I'd share my experience, not downing Pentax, because the lenses I do have work fantastically. I need a faster zoom lens and they are all about 1000 bucks. Oh well, at least I don't have to buy lenses with stabilization every time.

Those feelings of anticipation and inspiration are fierce! I recently ordered the K-S2 w/ 18-50 and 50-200 from Amazon in April before becoming a member here, and I just now passed my 10,000th shutter cycle. It is my first dslr, and I had no idea what to expect while I waited for it arrive. Have fun!

Thank you all!

yes, that is how her program ended. I guess the picture left that sort of open to interpretation, haha

I just discovered the noise reduction tool in the camera raw filter in photoshop. I was desperately trying to keep the iso under 400 because everything looked so grainy before I knew about that method. I ordered an adapter for a few old minolta lenses my late grandfather passed on to me, it should be here soon. The 50mm 1:1.4, a 28mm 1:2.8 plus a teleconverter; it should be rather interesting to see the difference a wider aperture will make.

Are there any other good ways to reduce high ISO noise besides in camera raw?

Hello everyone, I am just beginning to embark on the journey of photography with the new K-S2 and the kit 18-50mm and 50-200mm lenses. I am interested in shooting landscapes, portraits, wildlife near my house, and my wife and her figure skating students at the ice arena. It's been challenging determining the right settings for shooting on the ice, and I think I definitely need a faster lens to get the look I am going for, but here are a few of the shots I have managed to make look decent. Please let me know about any helpful advice you may have as I find my way to pro-quality photos.
