[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

This camera is made for me.

I got sucked into the Pentax family in the early 80's when I couldn't afford a brand name camera so the sales guy suggested I buy a Cosina because it had a K mount and could use Pentax lenses.

Then I upgraded to an MZ-7 which met my needs quite nicely until film became obsolete. A few P&S digital cameras later, I finally came back to a "proper" camera. Could only afford the body but once again the K mount meant my old lenses (mostly crappy ones) could still be used.

So then, K10D > K20D > K-7 > K-5. I upgraded regularly because my stock photography hobby was making it possible. I stopped at the K-5 because it was doing what I needed and there were enough rumours of a FF that I thought I'd wait. By the time the K1 came out, my hobby could no longer justify a new camera...

But I'm old enough now that the kids are out of the house ( sadly I had to look up who Candice Swanepoel was... ) so that finally leaves a little extra money to buy something for me. This camera will check a lot of boxes.

Would I buy a Pentax if I was starting from scratch? Hard to say but I've always been drawn to more niche brands so possibly. I do suspect there are a lot of people like me who quit upgrading for a period of time who might now be in a position to do so. If they are sitting on old Pentax glass and want to make sure they get good pictures of the grandkids playing soccer, they won't be happy with their cell phones so this might just be the camera for them. (and me.)

Good analogy regarding tests versus in the field. I will tell you that my (former) Ford F150 Ecoboost rated fuel economy and my (current) Ram EcoDiesel were almost the same in the controlled environment. However, my Ram is much much closer to the quoted numbers in real everyday driving, and my driving environment or habits haven't changed.

So while lab results are important, the true mark of a product is how they handle the everyday environment. Some do better than others. You can't assume that once outside the lab, two different cameras will be proportionally "less perfect".

One (hopefully the Pentax) may be better able to stay closer to the quoted specs. Is that the better camera? It is if you don't take all of your pictures in a lab. :)

I think in many ways, the MkII is aimed directly at users like me. I used to upgrade bodies regularly but for a variety of reasons, stalled at the K-5. When it started to sound like a FF was coming, I held-off on buying the K-3's. And then having been burned too many times by buying the first items (from any manufacturer) off the production line, decided to wait until the initial K-1 bugs were ironed out. So I was actually anticipating a MkII of some sort.

Sure I would have loved to have seen some of the "issues" current K-1 owners identify as shortfalls addressed. (buffer, AF, fps) I suspect they will be in the next new model but do I want to spend another 3 years waiting for this mythical perfect camera while my K-5, while still quite functional, feels older all the time? I expect jumping up to the MkII will make me kick myself for waiting so long. (and my FA31/FA77 will say they told me so....)

So it may just be a minor improvement for current K-1 owners but that wasn't their target. I think it was people like me who needed a new excuse to finally go FF. And for the current users, I think the opportunity to upgrade some of the internal IQ is pretty smart marketing.

The possible limit of both high CG and high FWC is theoretically derived from a signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) formula at a switching point from a low light signal (S1) to a bright one (S2). Based on this theory, a 1/4-in VGA-format 5.6-mum-pixel-pitch CMOS image sensor has been fabricated through a 0.18-mum 2P3M CMOS technology. A high-quality wide-dynamic-range image sensing has been demonstrated with no significant visible noise, achieving over 32 dB of SNR for an 18% gray card.

Found this on the interweb but have no idea what it means.

Also took a really nice picture of a squirrel yesterday.

So I've been paying attention to this with some interest. I'm a part-time stock photographer and also enjoy photography for... well for the pure joy of it. My Pentax journey started with a Cosina film camera in 1983 that the had the selling feature of utilizing a Pentax K-mount. Later upgraded to an MZ-7. When I finally made the jump to digital, it just made sense to buy the K10D since I already had some lenses. My stock hobby started to pay for new gear so I upgraded as new models came out. First the K20D, then the K-7 (because I had hoped for more on the video side of things, I'm still waiting...) and finally a K-5.

I've been relatively happy with the K-5 (yes better AF would be nice but it was a much better camera in my opinion than the K-7) but as the stock photography market became saturated and less profitable, I couldn't quite justify the K-3. When the K-1 was announced thought I'd wait until it matured a bit. I assumed Pentax would come out with a second version that would improve on the initial FF, to give Pentaxians a reason to upgrade rather than simply finally having a FF.

So my question: I know a K1-II will be an improvement. I'm curious from existing K-1 users who also have had a K-5, what are the core enhancements that I might expect that will make a hands-on difference?

Tethering mode - DNA softaware

So, for 39.99 USD, I decided to give it a shot. Wish I had a few years ago. With Lightroom 5 (Windows Version 64 Bit) and my Pentax K-5, it works just fine. I purchased a 15' USB extending cable to reach my laptop/monitor.

While the software isn't very advanced in terms of being able to change settings on my camera remotely (it can't) it does do the important thing it was supposed to. Namely, it allows me to take a picture, and see the results on a full-sized screen in LR, which makes it much easier to tweak my setup. I can bump my strobes up a little and confirm right away on a proper screen if I've got a nice pure white background. Shooting in RAW has not been an issue with the paid version.

If tethering is important to you and you didn't think there were any options for older Pentax cameras into Lightroom, this is good news. Why it took a random piece of hacked coded to make it possible rather than Pentax making it available is beyond me. They would have been smart to promote this (or buy it out and sell it as their own solution) to satisfy potential users who stayed away because they needed tethering. I didn't "need" it, but I sure am having fun with it!

Tethering mode - DNA softaware

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd check and see if anyone is using DNA software successfully. I have a K-5 and am using LR5. From time-to-time I've searched online to see if anyone has developed a good tethering option yet. (I was never all that impressed with PK-Tether) The most recent time I looked, I stumbled across the Tether Tools website DNA Software – Tether Tools and they had a link to DNA which looked like it would meet my needs.

I downloaded the demo and other than the very large and ugly watermark, it appeared to work fine until the 5th shot when it locked up transferring the image. I was shooting RAW so switched to jpg which seemed to address the issue. I'm sure it's not as good as native software would be but before I pay for the official working version, I thought I'd check here to see if anyone is using it and cares to share their experience.

Hoping this will tide me over until I can justify a K-1. ;-)

Pentax K-1 Officially Announced

Do I wish it had better video? Of course I do. That was the rationale I used years ago when I switched from my K10D to my K7. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed and have not done much with video since. (currently have a K5) But at $1,800 USD, would I pay an extra $500 for video? Not a chance. So I think they've done their research and realized that the sweet spot in the FF market is to be very price competitive and at this price you can't have it all. At a higher price, people new to DSLR's wouldn't likely choose Pentax because the name recognition simply isn't there anymore. At this price, they may just bring in some new users as well as all of us who don't "need" 4K video. If it had 4K at the price of D810, everyone would be complaining that it's too expensive. I think they've nailed it at this price point.

Under Other Features, they state "WiFi operation allowing camera control and image transfer to tablet or smartphone via the free ImageSync app". Does this also include Wifi to LightRoom? No reference made to tethering so I'm assuming their Wifi eliminates the need for tethering but given the image sizes, I'm curious as to how well (ie quickly) this would work in a studio setting.

Around. $1900.00 for the FF n the U.S.? What. do you think?

The cost is not in the slightly larger/faster/bigger parts, but in the engineering and re-tooling that goes into ANY new part. Whether it's for a FF or a Q, every time you have to re-design something, it costs a lot of $$. The price is dictated by the volume of units they want to amortize the cost over. So if Ricoh decides to amortize the new engineering and retooling of a new Penta Prism or shutter over this run of FF's, then it will be expensive. If the bean counters and marketing folks agree to do it over the next two or there series of FF's, then they can be very competitive on the price without sacrificing quality. We really won't know until it released. The marketing folks will want to spread the cost over many versions of their upcoming FF's, the accounting folks will be much more conservative. The final pricing will be an interesting window into who's actually running Ricoh/Pentax.

Just over 30 years ago, I purchased my first SLR with a small gift of money I had received. I bought a fully manual Cosina. One of the "features" pointed out by the sales guy was that it had a Pentax K mount. I'd never heard of Cosina, but I was familiar with Pentax. (although I always wanted one of the Canon's that looked so great in the Sears Wishbook) And while I said I wanted a fully manual camera, what I really wanted was to save some money and not pay for automatic features. My second SLR was actually a Pentax MZ7 because I'm also all about loyalty and very rarely buy what everyone else is buying. So all that to say I'm one of those "cheap" Pentax users.

When I purchased my K10D in 2007, (after doing all the research to see what I could get with my limited dollars) there were a couple of major deciding factors: I could use my existing lens, (sadly a kit lens) Pentax had in-body image stabilization so that just made sense, and native DNG. It didn't take long for the kit lens to go the way of the DoDo bird and be replaced by an FA31. Since then, I've added an FA77, DA*16-50, DA*50-135, and a Sigma fisheye. I've also migrated from my original K10D to K20D, K7, and K5. The K3 was not worth the upgrade for me but I know I will find a way to justify the new FF.

I've spent some money on glass and suspect that I may represent part of the market that Pentax/Ricoh is interested in. People who want value, a secondary brand with a certain niche "snob appeal" (admit it, you like to look down on Canikon users because they obviously just read marketing propaganda and don't really understand the concept of quality) I don't like to waste money, but I have enough disposable income to spend it when I decide something is worth spending on.

I have nothing to base this on other than what I'm willing to spend. For me, that price point will need to drop below $2K fairly shortly after release, or I will likely just keep carrying my K5 and knapsack full of prime and * lenses around until it does. This is not scientific, but it's my reality, and I suspect I represent a segment of the market they want to make sure they retain.

When I entered the digital era, I upgraded as Pentax did. (K10D to K20D to K7 to K5) I stopped at K5 because I shoot stock photography and couldn't justify a K3. So the K? will be a stretch for me if it is over $2K because in the stock photography world, the extra MP's aren't as important as they were a few years ago. There are other "wants" that the new FF may be able to satisfy, but from a purely ROI point of view, it will be more difficult to justify now than it would have been 3-4 years ago.

I don't disagree with you, but Pentax has been packing a "bag lunch" lately. I'm really hoping that Ricoh will make an investment in quality and features that will catch others by surprise.

I'm looking for something in the $2k (or sub $2K) range. They need to buy market share. The Pentax faithful will upgrade at that price and the people tire-kicking FF's will take a serious look at Pentax once they start considering things like usability, weather sealing, native DNG, in-body stabilization etc. The "pro's" have already gone elsewhere or upgraded to a 645Z. But give the enthusiast's 8+fps in a weather-sealed body with in-body stabilization, an articulating screen, wifi, and half decent auto-focus under $2K and you might just have something that you can sell in volume.

I contacted Sun a few weeks ago when the lens release button on my K-5 went missing. They were quick to respond by email, but then let me know they were waiting for parts. Haven't heard anything in about 4 weeks so out-of-inventory parts take some time.

I work in Kitchener so the old Mississauga location for Pentax was very convenient as I could get there in about 1/2 hour and avoid having to ship my camera or lenses by courier. Waiting in the lobby for someone to answer the phone always felt pretty "Mickey Mouse" but at least I could hand deliver and pick up my equipment.

BTW - I first went to Henry's in Waterloo to see if I could get the release button that I need. When I tried to describe the part, I asked to see a camera so I could show them. They told me they no longer carry Pentax in-store.

Mine fell off last week and I couldn't find it so had to order new parts. Still waiting for them to come in. These are the part numbers Pentax Canada told me to order: 007724 0-A107 Mount lock button 0076830 A99 Lock button packing 0027030 A358 Retainer ring A. Looks like a pretty small hole so I sure hope it all makes sense when I finally see the parts.

Pentax K-3 Specifications

I guess everyone's experience is different. My DA*16-50 is my standard walk-around lens having outlived both my K20D and K-7 before graduating to my K-5. No issues. My DA*50-135 OTOH has been into the shop twice for SDM issues, and my K-5 twice. I guess if we had each ordered from different batches, one of us would be raving about how robust our lenses are, and the other would have switched to another brand.

BTW - since the most recent repairs (knock on wood) all lenses and cameras are performing wonderfully.

Shoot. I've been outed as I think this is only my 6th post. Got suckered into a Cosina back in 1983 because it had a Pentax mount. Then an MZ-7. Finally sprung for a DLSR and refused to pay for a CaNikon because I had a perfectly good kit lens that my K-10D could still use. (that lasted about 3 months before I go some real glass ;) ) Then the natural progression to K-20D, K-7, K-5. always in search of better AF. Who knew I really loved CaNikon (aka "big brother") Anyone want some well loved Limited Primes and DA* lenses?
