Pentax 645 600mm f/5.6 or Pentax 67 600mm f/4

The ED lenses do really well with converters. I have used the 300 EDIF (6x7) with the 1.4X and see no degradation. The 400 FA should do well. The converters are color corrected, so they do not add CA. In fact they can actually reduce it a bit in some cases. The lenses that do not use extra low dispersion glass can be used with converters but one must stop them down somewhat to avoid the longitudinal chromatic at the marginal zone of the optic ( spherochromatism).

I have owned the 600 f/4 Takumar for over 20 years. It is an outer bay lens so your adapter would have to accommodate that. Also, once you stop it down to f/13 or more the CA is near zero. It is very sharp once the CA disappears.

90% 6x7 film (Pentax)
5% 35mm film
5% digital

I have sold work from all three but much prefer to shoot the 6x7.

FYI-- The US is no longer fully Capitalist, with the corporate end of the business spectrum being highly concentrated with monopolies, duopolies and oligopolies. Capitalism still lives in our smaller businesses though. Once you go from oligopoly to duopoly to monopoly you lose competition and profit margins soar. Costs to the consumer go up due to price fixing. Japan is Capitalist and has competition among various corporations but the degree of oligopolies is fairly small compared with the US. Internal competition within the camera sector keeps prices lower than if produced in the US. So there is some good news in all this. It could be worse!

Nice tropical work Gary. I have done quite a bit of that over the past 30 years but not much in the jungles. Most of my tropical work was seascapes. This is one of the few jungle shots I've done. Hilo, Hawaii area, 67, 55-100 zoom and mosquitoes. Cropped.

Should I buy this 6 x 7?

Gary--- Most owners of this non-MLU camera did not modify the film spool pins and the film loading became a nightmare because the pins were too long. One just could not load film without a struggle. The newer models had shorter pins. I modified mine and still use the camera.

Buying a non MLU 6x7 at this point in time is not for the Pentax 6x7 novice. If you had already owned this system for years and knew the camera well, then that is another matter. The non MLU camera is harder to load than the newer models, had more problems with frame spacing and of course no MLU. I own one (along with 2 newer ones) but can't recommend them.

Or you could go retro and use a Pentax 645 or 6x7 with print film and have your lab make prints from the negatives.

Taiwan is worth seeing and shooting. Below is a 6x7 shot from the southern part of the island. The culture is different from China, as they struggle to remain independent.

People have loved these places to death. They have become photographic cliche's. There is a place in Colorado in the fall where there are so many photographers on a ridge shooting the fall colors that they are lined up, shoulder to shoulder. It is pathetic! I tend to shoot areas that have not been shot to any degree.

Thanks for sharing Gary. Interesting that you sell outside of your country. I don't sell much out of the US; a bit in Canada though. Probably 80% of my sales go to calendars and most of that is from my 6x7s.

Back in those olden days I used the DOF scale on the lens, realizing these scales were a bit too optimistic, I used the scales a bit more conservatively. Knowing the accuracy of your DOF scale on each lens was important. I still use lenses today with DOF scales. It works for me. With my 2 lenses without scales, I added hyperfocal dots for various apertures.

They do, however this is one of the seven major aberrations that designers correct. As such, field curvature is quite small and seen when the lens is wide open to a small degree. But this focal plane image curvature is masked by increased depth of focus when the lens is stopped down to any degree.

If I needed the detail that these large sensors offer, I would opt for a cheaper alternative-- A 4x5 with fine grain film and drum scanning.

That is an interesting and unique take on photography Bob. You have created your own niche.

I have been known to write magazine articles on travel and regional subjects to place my pictures.

I have owned the 90-180 since release and like it. I bought it for its f/45 in macro and landscape work. It's sharp enough for publication purposes but is slightly inferior to the 55-100. The gap you have to fill seems to be between 100 and 200mm. If it were me, I would choose the 165LS over the zoom for the following reasons-- 1. the 165 is sharper and has the same design as the 200mm. 2. it's smaller and lighter. 3. It has f/32 so the DOF is still pretty good. Be aware that I own both and am not selling either due to preference. I use them both. The zoom is so cheap now that one could actually do a trial run to test it out.... or do a trial run on the 165 instead. If you are thinking or replacing the 200 with the 90-180, I would not.

Same here; it's why I have not fully retired. It's who I am.

I still shoot 6x7 film mostly and feel it is a proven medium.

Ever since the Great Recession here in the States, many of my clients have paid less. It made an already difficult business even tougher.

The CA is not all that bad considering that this lens only has a triplet up front and a field flattener at the rear. This lens competes well with the 400 Takumar. Strangely, the 600 Takumar's CA problem is actually improved a bit with the use of a rear converter, probably because the converter is so well corrected for color.
