I tend to agree with you. To me it's looking as if they're planning to launch another holy trinity: the D-FA* 85mm/50mm/35mm F1.4 series. Highly durable and optically in the same region as Zeiss and Leica. Why not?

Better put your glasses on then, as the lens CLEARLY is imprinted with 1.4/50. Even on the official Pentax website: Reference Exhibit at CP? 2017?RICOH IMAGING

So, the 85mm f/1.4 will probably be even larger. :D

DFA*50 1.4 coming

Why a 50mm? Let me guess, way back then (sorry Kenspo :P) there was some sort of race between SLR manufacturers: who made the best 50mm lens? And if I'm not mistaken Pentax was right there at the top of the list. They made top notch stuff, in fact the 50mm Takumars were SO good optically and mechanically that Asahi made them at a loss. The mechanical quality was SO high, not even this new 50mm Star lens will come close. Of course, times have changed. They can compute a superb lens scheme in a matter of seconds. However, this will not mean a pleasing overall picture, or a great bokeh. This is why pixie dust is still needed, and Pentax is king in this regard. ;)

Highly interesting lens!

Zeiss says the following in their marketing material regarding the Otus 55/1.4:

"absolutely no compromises", "highest-possible image quality", "accept no substitute", "exceptional performance", "spectacularly detailed", "optical and technical excellence", "perfect optical correction", "highest contrast performance", "outstanding sharpness", "exception to the rule" and ... "The best standard lens in the world"

Will this also be true for this new Pentax Star lens? :D

Typical Ogl-topic, really. Before any announcement of a new Pentax model: enthusiastic, positive... After the official announcement: always disappointed and down. It's what makes this forum so fantastic! :D

Pentax KP - Specifications

Yes, but it's still possible. Pentax had a service to replace the rubber part of the grip on the K-5/K-7 with a larger one, though these had to be glued on at a service center. (Can't find the link right now).

Beautiful piece of engineering, the removable grips. I fully suspect these will also make their way to the K-3 III. Though I'd probably like a XXXL version. :P

Maybe, but a joke it isn't. They got the idea from the Pentax LX, which had the same kind of removable grip.

I'd love to see how it looks WITHOUT any of the attached grips. Is it still functional like a ME-Super, just smaller?

Now it's getting interesting.

BTW: I recall Pentax offering different rubber grip sizes on the K-7 (or was it the K-5?) on the domestic Japan market. Maybe they found a way to easily change the grip, just like you could on the LX.

Isn't the KP name just as unlikely as K-9? I mean, K-Pee. Or is it pronounced K-Pie?

What would be the idea behind this? Better optics (less distortion), but it would also require more processing power (which is needed anyway if it can record in 4K).

What are your "Hidden Gems" in your lens inventory?
Posted By Asahiflex

Did you know that the front element of the 35mm f/3.5 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar has a much simper coating that the other elements? This has to do with the extreme curvature of the front element; the S-M-C coating would have an adverse effect on light rays entering at extreme angles.

But I agree that it's a "hidden" gem. There are a few offbrand lenses I have in high regard too:

- The Meyer 100mm f/2.8 Orestor. Optically it's a much nicer lens than the 105mm Asahi variants.
- The 17mm f/3.5 RMC Tokina. I liked it more than any Pentax lens around the same focal length.
