Hm. A7R III?

I think a reason why the stabilizer in the K-1 works better is maybe because of the way you hold it (up to the eyes, whereas with the GX80 you may hold it away from you instead. Of course if you use the viewfinder, ignore what I just said). Also, it's heavier. I'm not one to notice IS very much in stills, so I had no problems there. It does well enough for me.

My K-5 is a low light beast compared to the GX80, absolutely, although I do like the noise pattern of the GX80 more. It looks more... organic. The K-5 has a much bigger dynamic range in low light situations though, and really above ISO 1600 I absolutely prefer my Pentax.

I always have the GX80 with me, the Pentax stays at home most of the time.

I was also quite interested in that camera... too bad Samsung didn't stick to it. Had they released a Mk II, and perhaps a Mk III, and also offered enough lenses for it (or better yet, make it compatible with an existing system), I think they could have established themselves in the market. But after years of me too products few cared about they released a great one that got many excited, and then they stopped making cameras as people were waiting to see if it is ok to invest into the new system.


I liked mine a lot, until someone stole it. I replaced it with the V20.

As usual with LG, the hardware is great, but the software is a bit of a let down. Hopefully their new software team can actually fix things, and will actually update older phones too.

I currently have a Sony Xperia XZ2... great hardware, it feels extremely comfortable in my hands (it's pretty fat, but curves extremely well into the hand rather than being a very flat thing with slightly curved sides, which makes the phone uncomfortable to hold). The camera hardware is pretty good too, but the image processing is terrible. There's a way to eek out pretty much unprocessed images, and at ISO 40 they are really good. Noise free, sharp (with actual detail). The lens is fantastic for a phone, IMHO. But if you don't do that, if you let the phone process the images, you're getting an oil painting with some extremely strong sharpening (so much that you can see the halos zoomed out) and with local contrast raised (an effect I like, but I like to have control over too). They pop nicely when zoomed out, and are pleasant to look at (plus with HDR on the dynamic range is pretty good, while still looking quite natural... they look a bit like DSLR photos instead of HDR photos). But I'd like to have control over the sharpening, over the denoising, etc. Ideally raw photos...

Also I bought a cheap variable ND filter, mostly for video. It does lose some sharpness, which is a bummer. Not sure if I should return it and get something better.

Plus I bought a Tenba Cooper 13 camera bag. It fits 5 lenses (12-32 pancake, 35-100 (smaller than a 50 1.8), and for Pentax a DA 50 1.8, 18-55 and Tokina 80-200), has space for my Panasonic GX80 and Pentax K-5, can fit my MBP 13", some additional gear, is comfortable to carry, looks really nice (and not like a camera bag), well made, ... The velcro can be pretty quiet if you pull it down first. And there's quite a few nice details. They have smaller and bigger versions too. Highly recommended (initially I wanted the Peak Design Everyday Messenger 13, but in the end I think the Tenba is a better choice for me).

Nah. I dropped my Pentax for most of my photography. The Panasonic is good enough in most situations, if not better than the Pentax (always depends on what you need). Plus it has the benefit of being so much easier to transport. There are situations where I'll put my Pentax in the bag, but they are few and far between. I just can't justify bringing it along, because the Panasonic does great video AND great stills, while Pentax does okay video and great stills, but is much heavier. And I want video too wherever I go.

And I think if I'd be doing professional work, I'd still just use the Panasonic. Maybe I'd go for a bigger Panasonic if clients want to see a professional looking camera, but I don't see much point in getting a Pentax at this point.

Limitations are usually due to technical constraints or for tax reasons (30 minutes). So I guess the 96 GB limit is because of the file system etc. The number already sounds like that...

I like to shoot concerts too, and am quite happy with my GX80. Ideally you use Panasonic lenses with IS, for the dual IS system which works really well. If you rely on in body stabilization only, it can hit its limit. Granted, with a 200mm lens (so at 400mm basically) the smallest movement would need massive movement of the sensor to balance it out. I don't think the IS is bad... it just isn't as organic and beautiful as on a Pentax... shame, because you can't use it for video on a Pentax (newer than the K-5).

I find the GX80 pocketable with the 12-32, though I'm thinking big pockets, like coats and jackets.

Manual focusing works with focus peaking, for 4K video I find it good enough. For stills I mostly use Panasonic lenses though.

@LensBeginner: Get the GX85 with the 12-32. It's quite wide, it is sharp (I'd say 50mm 1.8 levels of sharp when stopped down quite a bit), it has AF and it is tiny. And has IS, for that super smooth dual IS. Plus together with the GX85 it is really cheap. Only thing it doesn't have is a focusing ring, for obvious reasons (there's simply no space for one!).

Currently I have a Sony Xperia XZ2 for review, which has some strong points, and others which are, well, less than stellar (who thought putting a phone into a casing made of glass was a good idea? It's slippery, fragile (well, if it drops), scratches easily and overheats constantly (glass has the neat property to isolate heat... so the heat is trapped inside).

Anyway, they didn't integrate physical image stabilization, but that doesn't seem to be much of an issue since at least for video the electronic stabilization is really good. No wobbling, and little light streaks when the camera is moved. Seems that with enough processing power and gyros sensors you can actually do impressive stuff. Now, obviously such processing power won't find its way into a DSLR, let alone a Pentax, in the next decade or so. But it's nice to know that electronic image stabilization can work well.

The Manta had a bad rep in Germany... as in it was the butt of jokes. They even made 2 or 3 movies about it. The problem were the guys driving it... they were portrayed as young men with too much testosterone, not the brightest, ...

Cool car though, now it's a classic. Not many remain.

I was finally able to drive the Jaguar F-Type R. Being passenger is nice... but driving the thing... it's heaven. There was so much drama going on that I didn't even notice the traction control doing overtime trying to keep the car from staying stationary, while everything else was hard at work keeping a straight line. It's an absolute hooligan. But the brilliant thing is, apart from the engine that is too responsive (think electric car, but with way more noise) it works as a comfortable cruiser too. Push a button, and it's quiet, relatively refined, with comfort oriented suspension. Push it again and it stiffens up considerably, and roads you thought were smooth show they aren't. At all. The steering sharpens up too, apparently it even uses GPS data to know how direct it should be. And then there's the noise! Ease of the gas pedal, and you hear gun fire. Brilliant. Comfortable seats too, though you don't really see much out of the car. The hood? Nope (I could raise the seats, but then it feels like sitting on the car instead of in the car). The rear window looks like it's far away. It isn't. It's just tiny. The C pillars are the size of buildings. And yes, there are bits and pieces that feel cheap. The GPS is... meh. The Meridian sound system isn't as good as the price tag and brand name suggests. But it's oh so much fun, but you can still live with it as a daily driver (if you only need to carry one more passenger and like to travel light). I think if I could have any car in the world, this would be it. Good looks, versatile, fun, and an amazing noise.

UI. IMHO Sony is a nightmare to use (I'm exaggerating of course). I haven't tried their latest, and I haven't had the chance to use one for a longer period. I do like their DSLTs, but those aren't great for videos either.

But yes, to me a big issue with Pentax is that other brands are about as good for stills, perhaps a bit better, perhaps slightly behind, but they beat video by a mile. So why not go for the allrounder that does everything? Why settle for a thoroughbred racing car when there's one that is a comfortable cruiser, which, by the push of a button, is every bit as fast and as fun as the racing car?

And lets not forget about VW, which has everything from the 4053mm long Polo to the 5073mm long Atlas sitting on the same platform... and I once read that one factory is able to produce multiple different vehicles based on this platform on one production line.

Their system is a masterclass in efficiency.

Ford will continue producing the Focus etc., so they don't even have to lower the cars again. They just have to bring in these models.

I was amused when I heard they were going to bring in the EcoSport in order to replace the Fiesta. Really. The EcoSport is regarded as one of the worst cars these days, certainly amongst the ones made by Ford. It's a dreadful third world car (though they have tried to fix that, and maybe newer versions are okay?). Brilliant super mini, vs. terrible small crossover.

There's nothing in the "new" Ford updated lineup (amongst the cars replacing the sedans and hatchbacks) that could get me even mildly interested. But I'm not an American. The Raptor is cool, but it would be a nightmare to live with over here.

What has made me stop considering Ford in the past was their interior, the interior design. It's just ugly and outdated. It's a shame, because in terms of driving dynamics they are wonderful (apart from the EcoSport). Used to drive a 1996 Ford Fiesta for a while, and it was great fun. Similar era Ka? Go kart with doors. And the Focus from the late 2000s? Good fun, too. Thankfully the latest Focus fixes the interior...

14 year old tyres? Good lord! I once had, like, 10 year old tyres on my car (my father was sold some very old stock... and then the car wasn't used all that much). They were round, no issues there, and grip seemed ok. Until it got a bit colder. On some surfaces they were almost as bad as summer tyres on ice (and they were winter tyres).

Auto stick? As in manual gearboxes with a robot doing the shifting? Those are terrible. Double clutch ones are nice to drive, and really fast, but reliability is a concern. I think you ought to drive them like a manual, especially at low speeds. No crawling etc.

18 gears? wow. But haven't trucks and buses moved on to automatic gearboxes, too?

Hm. But the only successful European cars in the US that aren't built for the US market are luxury ones. And Japanese brands cover the mainstream with purpose built cars for the US market, too.

Also, it's not like US brands don't have European cars. Ford does, and is successful with them. GM had Opel, which does ok in Europe (especially with one of their smallest cars, the Adam). US customers didn't want them though.

As for servicing and fixing things, I am aware of that. But there are cases where it was obvious. Some rubber sealing was damaged (no idea what it's called in English), so dirt could get into some components of the steering system. Replacing the rubber thing would have been a few bucks, but by the time it was noticed it was game over. Likewise, I head gasket failures on two cars. Both were fixed, but one of them didn't survive. It was too late. Had the workshop bothered to check the oil cap (or had I known back then), the problem could have been fixed before the engine was beyond repair.

Mh. Have you tried VW? They tend to do a great job with their infotainment systems, though I'm a bit unhappy with the way they are going, removing physical controls around the screen just so they can make it look nicer and install a bigger screen. The one on my 2013 Golf is brilliant, though granted it was not cheap at around 2,5k Euro. And compared to a modern phone it could be faster. But it's rock solid, the interface is nice to look at AND nice to use, with smart ideas like buttons getting bigger when your finger gets closer to the screen.

I have my smartphone next to my steering wheel, but a) using it isn't legal, and b) it's way more frustrating.

The Ford thing shocked me. That can't make any sense. And if it's a fleet thing, why of all things keep the Mustang? If one car can't fulfill modern standards, that should be the Mustang, no? Besides, it's not like they have spent money on developing those cars anyway. A big cost factor is gone. They need these models for Europe etc. anyway.

I can't imagine giving up my German citizenship, way too many benefits. :)

I bought a dehumidifier. Very exciting. :D

And a couple of lens caps etc., because my old ones were worn out, and Panasonic was too cheap to supply 2 lens caps in a kit with 2 lenses and one camera.

Hm, but isn't it possible that the thing really needs fixing? I've had things that needed to be fixed, but I didn't notice them, and they weren't noticed during the service either. So what used to be a cheap repair turned into not worth it anymore.

So I'm glad when they find anything that could turn into something serious early enough.

Diesels shouldn't be dead. They are almost as fun as petrol cars, especially if you like torque and don't like to rev, they are way more frugal, and they can be as clean as a petrol. It can be done.

Plus there's a new diesel petrol engine tech that uses both in order to achieve insane efficiency levels while being very clean (without special treatment).

I've saved 50% on list price on a 3 year old Golf, though if I had ordered it new I wouldn't have paid list price either, so the savings aren't that big. My main reason though was that I could get the car right away, and I needed it urgently. Plus there weren't many cars with the specs I wanted, even with the best selling car in the country.

Got to use my K to m43 adapter for photography today... I'm starting to get the hang of it, though occasionally I was shooting with the aperture fully closed when I wanted to shoot wide open. Oh well. And it's odd not knowing what f-stop you are shooting at... unless it's f1.8 or f22. I guess I could calculate it...?

I think I forgot to mention that I bought some Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 half a year ago... will pick them up next week. Sweet. Some decent, sticky tires after having driven Pirelli P7 for 2 years (and they aren't the best).

Pointing fingers doesn't help though. There'll always be a worse offender, but we all need to do something.

As for mining... my hope is that these projects shift to a more scientific nature. Mining is based around proofing some work, some effort was put into it, in order to create something of value. At the moment most of these projects are doing nonsensical calculations that only eat up energy. But the scientific community is in dire need of processing power... especially the less commercial ones that can't afford to spend on supercomputers. Now if mining could be done (and would be profitable) with these projects... I know there are some projects that do it, but they need more polishing, and most of all they need to be more profitable. One way to do it would be by government interference. Put incentives into place for projects that create added benefit. With all the processing power that is currently going into mining useless coins cancer could be cured. Or Alzheimer.

We are in the early stages of mining digital currencies, I truly hope we are moving in the right direction.

Also, yes, digital currencies are brilliant, and they solve some problems. However there's so much more that could be done with them. Unfortunately the projects that didn't attempt to do so much got a head start, and now the better projects can't get critical mass to take off.

As for ponzi scheme... I don't think so. Not the actual currencies, though there certainly are ponzi schemes around it. These coins are mostly unregulated, and a target of many gold diggers looking for a quick buck. So there happens lots of manipulation tactics that are illegal with regular stocks and currencies. And so the value jumps up and down.

Yup, Germany, and yup, I'm aware that we're quite different from the rest of the world. I wish fuel was cheaper, because back in the day people would drive faster and thus be better drivers. Now with slowing speeds people have gotten quite terrible.

And yes, old trucks are a bad idea. I hope they are soon replaced by those electric trucks etc.

A friend had an S5 8.5 in the 5 door version. There are more advantages compared to an A5, apart from top speed. Acceleration of course, and the S5 has AWD vs FWD. Handling is improved, adaptive dampeners mean it could both do comfortable and sporty, depending on what was needed. etc. He recently moved up to a Jaguar F-Type R, which can be a comfortable long distance cruiser with suspension softer than, say, a Golf (not the sporty variants) and low noise levels... but also an absolute hooligan, with insane noise levels and explosions like gun shots, track focused suspension etc. The perfect car, basically.

As for limitations of old lenses, AFAIK there's another one that wasn't mentioned here... (at least I didn't see it). Old lenses were designed for film, which is less sensitive to the angle of incoming light. Especially older DSLR sensors needed the light to hit it at a 90 angle, which complicates lens design. With old lenses this wasn't a consideration, as the film would pick up the light as long as it hit the film at all. You may be getting more vignetting etc. when mounting the lens on a digital camera versus a film camera.

Packing... oh boy. I've had a tablet shipped in only the original box, which really wasn't designed to take a beating. There was no cushioning for the tablet. Fortunately it survived, which was surprising since I already owned the same model, but a very minor drop destroyed that devices screen. And Amazon has been particularly bad... one graphics card (which these days are as elusive and expensive as diamonds it seems...) was wrapped in a clear plastic foil. Not only was the device poorly protected, but it was also absolutely clear what the content was. The second one was in a box, but cut to size so there was no wiggle room. And from what I heard they also ship hard drives like that, which is absolutely deadly.

As for the it's too cold for electric cars reasoning: Norway is full of electric cars. I think they know a thing or two about cold weather. It's all an infrastructure thing, IMHO. If you can charge up your car anywhere, it's not a big issue. You park your car to go shopping, you plug it in. As it's plugged in, and probably has an internet connection, you could tell the car to warm up before you arrive there.

Setting up the infrastructure needed for electric cars should be much easier than for hydrogen or anything else, really. All you need is a strong enough power socket, and a place where you can place the charger (which doesn't take up much space, and in the grand scheme of things is much cheaper than a proper petrol station. A Tesla Supercharger Station is supposed to cost between 100.000 and 270.000 USD, while a hydrogen station would cost around 3 million USD. The only advantage hydrogen has there is that you need fewer of these stations. However, you could place single chargers everywhere around town, so you don't actually have to go out of your way to get your car filled up. And home owners with garage have no issue charging at home, which, if the range is big enough, is already enough to cover all their needs.

My big issue with electric is that it is a good solution for SOME use cases. However if you're not doing many miles, on a very predictable route (that is you stay within the range of the car, or can conveniently charge it up mid way), then it may not make sense. These batteries use valuable materials and are very expensive. Wasting them on a car that rarely gets driven could be worse for the environment than even the worst truck. Petrol cars (or hydrogen, perhaps) make much more sense here. Or long distance drivers. If you have to charge the car several times a day, which requires you to take a break, and you have to drive slower anyway because driving fast really isn't the specialty of electric cars, it just don't make much sense. With a modern diesel, I can easily do 1000 km before refilling it. Or drive significantly faster and refill it every 700-800 km... (a Golf 7 TDI 2.0 will do around 7-8 liter around 180-200 km/h, IIRC). Do that in a Tesla, and you'll be charging every 150-200 km probably, if you can even go that far, and if the electric drive train and battery pack won't overheat.

The Mini is odd anyway :) They've taken one very small car, and turned it into everything but a small car. As long as people buy them, I guess? The hardtop 4-door looks like a hatchback to me. And it's not even that short, IMHO.



The main thing I believe is parking space. In the US, parking is probably not much of an issue? In Europe, or especially places like Tokyo it is. Of course Europeans also want to drive around in comfort (though you don't need a big car for that), but it's not comfortable if you have to search forever to find a place to park your car, and then park far away from your destination. Besides, cars like my Golf are decent long distance cruisers. I can drive for hours at 180 (around 110 mph) without fatigue... though to be comfortable it needs to be driven at such higher speeds. Drive slower, and the suspension is a bit stiff. But once you go fast...

A 6 TB Toshiba N300 NAS drive, and two GeForce 1060. I only wanted one, but my first order (of the card that I actually wanted) was on hold for months, with no estimated shipping date and the looming fear of cancellation. So I ordered another (with only 1 instead of 3 fans) when there was an offer... which arrived after only 1 1/2 months. A couple of weeks later I got confirmation that the first order is going to get shipped soon. Oh well. Now I've got two... it'll let them mine for a while before selling the lesser of the cards. They are great for gaming though, and Lightroom/Premiere Pro has sped up too. :)

Oh, and more photography related, a K to m43 mount adapter with aperture ring (since I want to adapt lenses without aperture ring).

I have to disagree with you there. IMHO hatchbacks can have 3 or 5 doors, just like estates. Often there is an estate version of a hatchback. Hatchbacks are pretty much like estates, but with less of a boot. Say, a bit like a sedan with the boot cut off (not that much, but a bit). Estate happens when you take a sedan, make it a tad longer and add a box on top of the boot. A prime example is the Golf. Available as a 3 door (the boot is considered as door, whereas with a sedan it isn't) and as a 5 door. Additionally there's a estate variant (Golf Sportswagen in the US), which is simply longer, with all of the added space going towards the boot (and in the case of hatchbacks with reclining roof lines head room for rear passengers). The hatchback has 380 liters of boot volume, the estate 605. For a while the sedan version of the Golf (called Jetta, Bora, Vento at different points in time) was closely related to the Golf, basically taking a Golf and adding a bit of a boot at the back. Newer Jettas don't do this anymore though... I guess they are mostly popular on the US market etc., which has other priorities anyway, so they may as well optimize the car for that market.

@Chris: Worse yet, there are enough people who lower their car even further, or add crap that makes them look lower (without any of the benefits!). I can kind of understand not having too much ground clearance, as that improves handling while retaining a decent amount of comfort (of course you can make a SUV handle well... but it's not going to be comfortable!). But these people lower their car so much that it becomes absolutely impractical and more like a moving road block. Very annoying (thankfully where I live now most people are more reasonable).

Yup. I honestly can't see that car doing well in the US either. Ours had the 1.6 liter diesel, good for some 56 hp. It also had the quad headlights, and was bright red.

Some really cool cars mentioned here.

Cars that my dad drove I wish I had now...? He usually owned Mercedes diesels, the one he always mentioned was a W110 diesel. According to him he did nearly a million km with it, with one replacement engine at some point. Given how much he drove back then I'm not too surprised, and it's obvious why he went for Mercs. They were in a different league back then for such high mileage use. And I'd want that car. Maybe not exactly with the diesel engine though.

Those uprated suspension setups sound a bit like what you'd get as standard in Europe. To get something really floaty you'd probably have to get an old Citroen, but because of their advanced suspension system they also featured decent handling. The Xantia Activa is flatter (and faster IIRC) around corners than a contemporary Lotus.

For a while car manufacturers went absolutely nuts. The Touran in Cross Touran guise (with some SUV styling bits added and a raised suspension), together with 17" rims felt absolutely brutal to me. Any road imperfection would just beat up the passengers. After a while the car softened up a bit, but that wasn't a pleasant thing to be in as a passenger (and it's a 7 seater minivan!). My Golf is supposed to be quite comfortable... I think it's okay, but I don't think I want it much harder. Fortunately cars are getting softer again these days, and once you've got adaptive dampeners (usually as an option, though VW will even sell you a Polo with adaptive dampeners if you want) it's fine. A friends Jaguar F-Type R, an absolute beast of a car rides beautifully with its adaptive dampeners. I'd say perhaps even more comfortable than my Golf.

Sadly enough there are still enough people who want it as uncomfortable as possible in Europe, so if you want to get a well speced Mazda 3, you'll have to go for the higher equipment levels. Which will also include big rims coated in rubber, and sports suspension. Since the stock suspension is already a bit stiff... And you can see many people order their cars with sports suspension and huge rims.

I do want my camera to have a flash, just in case, but I rarely use it. It's a last resort backup for me. Like I like my car to have airbags, even though I rarely use them. It's a shame Pentax dropped the flash on the K-3 II.

You can try the Cinelike D hack to get videos with more dynamic range. It gives you more freedom to edit the files, and it is pretty easy (and safe) to do.

How long the batteries last depend on if they are original ones or not. The original ones are really expensive, but they last quite a bit. The compatible batteries last maybe... 60-70% the time, however for the price of one original battery you can probably buy 10 alternative ones.

Sony mirrorless cameras tend to have huge lenses IMHO, and the colors...

Interesting thought. When I was born, my parents drove a small Suzuki Jimny and Alto (the Alto was an unreliable nightmare) before switching to a Renault 9 sedan. Then a Renault 19 sedan (which I gave input into... I always was quite the car nut). I miss the Renaults, and would like to own them again. But since they were utilitarian cars, they have almost disappeared. Especially the 9. And I'm not rich enough to restore an oldtimer... After that a Citroen Xsara II hatchback, again I played a role in the purchase. I ended up driving the Renault 19 for a while, and later the Xsara. When we moved to South East Asia we bought a Renault Kangoo mini van (as in, car front, cargo back... less than 4 meters long, but a decent 7 seater). I did love it, although almost no one would ever call it attractive. After my move back to Germany, I got the Xsara working again. Unfortunately the head gasket eventually failed, and I ended up buying the Golf. But I like all the cars we had, except for the Suzukis (I was 1 when we replaced them with the Renault). I can't imagine myself driving an SUV. Then again, I also could never imagine myself owning a Golf... always wanted French cars instead. So for me... I prefer the cars that my parents would have bought anyway, but then again I was influencing their decisions early on.

Also, I have a soft spot for station wagons. Though we never owned one. Unfortunately the want for something that is relatively short (and financial reasons) prevailed, otherwise, yeah, a Golf wagon probably?

Is too much pressure really an issue? For me it sharpens the handling. As long as it doesn't bulge at the center it's fine. Officially I should be running 2.2 bar, but I tend to run at 2.6. It does hurt comfort a little...

I'm also not too concerned about accelerating fast. After that I try to drive as smooth as possible, and to avoid braking. Braking is the worst thing you can do, in terms of fuel economy (except for driving very fast... especially with a turbocharged engine, which gets too hot, so it injects more fuel to cool the engine down again. IIRC.).
