No Rumor...Lens Prices Jump

I was pretty excited about the K-7 and was hoping to get one as soon as I could save up the money...now I'm pretty hesitant. I bought into Pentax mainly because similar quality Nikon gear was too expensive. I'll wait and see where this is all going, but if Hoya is deciding to send pentax into mini-Leica-land than I'll quickly turn my eye back to Nikon.

Be cautious with Abe's of Maine. I've heard many a bait-and-switch story with them.

ephotozine k-7 review

As to the composition adjustment feature, in my defense, the review was posted on 6/03 and Pentax had already posted information on this feature online. Maybe you wrote the review well in advance of publishing it, but I would think you would edit it once the information was available.

As to my other critiques, I certainly won't deny that I'm cynical and was probably a little too likely to pick up on any hint of negativity. I apologize for that.

And as for the E-620, I never thought you were comparing the two cameras, just thought your statement about the 620 being best camera ever was odd. Maybe it just needs a little more context.

I think Pentax's philosophy has been to keep some of the color in the photo to make it look more like it does in real life, but they've added the "strong correction" option for those who prefer to keep everything neutral.

The WB shots were taken with the FA 77, and the lens correction feature only works with DA and DFA lenses. And it's not PF, it's longitudinal CA, which the K-7 can't correct (only corrects distortion and lateral CA)

Wheatfield, where did you hear that? Doesn't make sense to me.

Besides, isn't the new 4-channel readout (necessary for the 5.2fps and video) built into the sensor? At least it's always listed as a sensor spec.

Last I heard (I believe from JCPentax, so it's about as official as you'll get) is that Pentax is pushing for late June/early July in the US. So there's no firm shipping date it seems.

K-7 First impressions... wow!

Yes, it's a custom function, as reported by JCPentax.

From what I understand, even with the smaller magnification, the overall size of the viewfinder is still slightly bigger than the K10/K20, and the new viewfinder screens are supposedly brighter as well, so Pentax is saying that manual focusing is better on the K-7 than before.

ephotozine k-7 review

(Mods - the search function doesn't seem to be working so if this has been posted before, please delete the thread)

In my eagerness for the K-7 I've been looking for every preview/review out there, and just came across this one from ephotozine: Pentax K-7 Digital SLR Review

The only good things to note are the ISO comparison shots and another HDR example, otherwise the review sounds oddly cynical but ends by saying that it's the most exciting camera of the year (but then he states right after that that he thinks the Oly E-620 is the best DSLR ever made...........yeah)

A couple other odd things to note:

"The shutter is newly developed for the K-7 boasting a top speed of 1/8000sec which is pretty good for a camera aimed at this market..."
- Huh? Pretty good for its market? What camera goes faster than 1/8000s?

In discussing the composition adjustment feature: "The frame can be moved around to use the excess pixels (usually denoted in a specification list as total pixels) on the sensor."
- Is it just me, or does it sound like they're not aware that the sensor is actually moving?

And I'm guessing this must have just been a typo about the HDR function: "if you prefer the distorted HDR effect over the natural effect found in Adobe Photoshop CS4 then this will be right up your alley."

Pretty sloppy all around, but I thought I'd share.

Quality of K-7 video

Seems odd then that Ned would specify that the streaming file from Vimeo is the same size as his native AVI from the camera, or am I still confused?

Quality of K-7 video

Maybe this is a dumb question then, but are we sure that the downloadable version is the same as the streaming version from Vimeo? Mr. Bunnell says he's confirmed that Vimeo is streaming the same size file as his native AVI, but I wouldn't see any reason why he would choose the lowest quality setting as the first "official" video sample from Pentax. Not to mention, according to that chart even the lowest quality setting for 720p should yield ~500mb file for a 2:17 long video.

EDIT: also note the title screens added in post. The actual video footage isn't 2:17.

It's their own naming scheme so I guess they can use it however they see fit, but from what I understand aren't all of the current MF digitals less than the true film MF size?

But isn't it known that Hoya was mainly interested in the medical optics side of Pentax, and as such wouldn't be inclined to shell out exorbitant amounts of R&D funds for the camera side?

I really think you're all setting yourselves up for one hell of a disappointment here.

Did we learn nothing from the ridiculous claims that were spread about the K-7 just 5 DAYS AGO!?

I'll be happy to be proven wrong here, but doesn't it seem at least a little skeptical that these rumors seem to be playing to every fanboy dream of Pentax? Be realistic guys, Pentax is a small company and you can't expect them to blow everyone out of the waters all of a sudden.

Hm...real or not I couldn't afford a single one of those lenses.

New DFA lenses would seem to suggest they're prepping a lens lineup for a future FF model, but a 20/2.8 and 50/1.0 seem like an odd place to start, especially since they already have the 50mm covered with the f/1.4. If they're really prepping the lineup wouldn't they start by covering standard ranges they don't already have?

And FWIW, wouldn't a 25/2.8 645 lens (if even possible) be in the neighborhood of $8000?

If Pentax managed to have, at any one point in time, at least 5 different 50mm lenses in production during the 80's and 90's, I would think they could have at least 3 ~30-35mm lenses today and still be able to sell each. The lineup should be DA 35/2.8 Macro Limited, DA* 30/1.4, and DA 30/1.8.

(From '84-'89 there were 5 different 50mm A series lenses alone, with the 1.2, 1.4, 1.7, 2.0, and 2.8 macro!)

^I agree, Yohan, but at $900 the 31 isn't a realistic option for many people and I think an affordable "fast-fifty" for the APS format would sell hugely, much more than a 35mm equivalent (though I'd want them to come out with that too, of course)

Oh how I'd love to see a DA 30/1.8 SDM WR for $200-250, but I imagine we'll get a DA* 30/1.4 for $500-600 instead

In browsing through B&H listings I've noticed something that I never really realized before:

Pentax has only 1 fast lens under $500, the FA 50/1.4 at $250, and with that being the only non-Limited FA lens left, I wouldn't be surprised to see it disappear soon. If that does happen, the only fast lenses in the Pentax lineup will be the FA Limiteds and DA* 55, the cheapest of which would be the 43/1.9 at $530 (you could argue that the DA 70/2.4 Limited is a fast prime though)

For comparison, Nikon has 6 fast primes under $500:
- AF 50/1.8 - $135
- AF-S 35/1.8 - $200
- AF 50/1.4 - $340
- AF 35/2.0 - $360
- AF 85/1.8 - $450
- AF-S 50/1.4 - $485

As does Canon:
- EF 50/1.8 - $115
- EF 35/2.0 - $300
- EF 85/1.8 - $380
- EF 50/1.4 - $400
- EF 100/2.0 - $420
- EF 28/1.8 - $460

Note: I'm not trying to bash Pentax here, I don't expect Pentax to offer the same breadth of options as the Big Two, and I know most of those Canikon lenses are FF (but then, so are all but 1 fast Pentax lens, the DA*55).

I bring this up mainly in hopes of stressing to Pentax reps (who obviously read these fora) of the need for consumer-level fast primes. After all, Pentax is supposed to be known for its prime lenses, but if the average consumer can't afford them anyway, one of the biggest advantages to the brand is moot. Only 1 prime lens is of the regular DA level, the 14/2.8 ($680), everything else is DA* or DA Limited.

I remember a while back a Pentax rep saying that their intention was to recreate the focal lengths of 35mm, which is why we get lenses like the 35 (~50) macro Limited, the DA 14/2.8 and 15/4 Limited (~20-24) and the DA*55 (~85)

So what about a DA 55/1.8, DA 30-35/1.8, DA 23/2.0, DA 18/2.0??

At the very least it should take very little effort to optimize the FA 35/2.0 for digital bodies and re-release it as a D-FA lens...

God do I agree. I don't mind luminance noise at all, but chroma noise just looks nasty and, for lack of a better term, digital. Luma noise looks more film like. This is one of my favorite (and oft pined for) aspects of Nikon. They do a tremendous job of cutting out the chroma noise, so even "grainy" high ISO images have a pleasing look to them.

At any rate, while these shots look rough, it's only firmware v0.2 so I'll ignore them.

Tokina doesn't make Pentax mounts, at least they haven't for quite some time now. All of their current lenses are Canikon only.
