Bummer. Say, aren't these rebranded as Neewer and maybe even other brands? Maybe some other brand has firmware that works with all Pentax drive modes?

Heh MattB with a K1,

This issue has apparently been around for a while. I was researching purchasing the Xpro P and found this Youtube video that describes the same problem with other drive modes:

You Tube

Can you update the firmware of your triggers? Maybe they've already fixed it.
Best,

Oh sorry didn't mean to be beating a dead horse there if it was me. This has come up before elsewhere, and often people simply don't want to believe it's true. But it's quite easy to test and see for yourself.

Wish I had a k1 to test it out on myself! :-) Thanks for all your images here.

Matt

I was talking about the extra area included by FF at the edges of the image circle only. On some lenses, you're going to see softer corners on FF than APS/C, but not on all.

This is true.

---------- Post added 05-19-2016 at 02:26 PM ----------

"Great explanation.
It's like somebody took all my lenses away one night and added some mystical element to them."

Nope, sorry, that explanation was all wrong. The mystical element is that the rendering of your lenses is qualitatively very different at and near the outside of the image circles they project. More vignetting, different shape bokeh balls, less resolution, it all adds up to a very different character to the images because that area is largely cropped out on APSC. It has nothing to do with perspective distortion if you are talking about equivalent focal lengths/the same angle of view. Of course the fact that wides are wide again is a big difference, but that's not what was being discussed here.

You can trust house on this one, he is the only one in this thread who understands perspective distortion with respect to sensor size/focal length. It's exclusively a function of angle of view and has nothing to do with focal length. There is a simple way to test this. Put a zoom lens on your camera mounted to a tripod. Snap a photo at the widest setting. Now zoom in (to a different focal length!) and snap another photo. On your computer, crop the wide angle shot to match the framing of the optcially zoomed shot. You will then have two shots with identical perspective distortion, because focal length does not affect perspective distortion one bit. Alternatively, put a K1 with an FA 43 on a tripod and take a shot. Now mount the FA 31 and take a shot. Crop the FA 31 shot to the framing of the FA 43 shot. Exact same perspective. No difference. Or mount the FA 43 to a K1 and the FA 31 to a K3. Crop the FA 31 shot (the FA 43 on FF will be just slightly wider than the FA31 on APSC) to match the FA 43 on the K1 and you will have the exact same perspective. No difference. Feel free to test this at home.

Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.

There is a marketplace on this forum. If you're going to get what these items are worth, you'll need better photos of them before you post them for sale there.

From what I can see, you've got a Pentax MX Special Edition (SE) in brown leather. That's a rare and neat looking classic Pentax. It looks like a Pentax M 50mm f/2 lens attached to it. Together, if in perfect working order, they should bring less than 50 bucks.

The image of the other camera is blurry and small, but it looks like a Pentax MZ 5n with a 28-80 zoom. It's so blurry, I could be wrong. This is also not going to net you a lot of cash.

What may actually be worth more than either is the Vivitar Series 1 lens inside the lens case there. Often, the lenses are worth more than the old film cameras they accompany, because we can still use those old lenses on new digital cameras. Take the Vivitar lens out of its case and photograph the front of the lens like you did with the ME SE so we can read the writing around the front lens element. Then we can tell you about what that's worth.

I hope that helps.

Matt

Oh, I see now you did write that it's a ZX 50. That camera with a lens will also get you less than 50 bucks. Like I said, the other lenses that are in the camera bag may be worth far more than the camera, or also only 10-30 bucks each. Some high-quality old lenses can be worth several hundred dollars. The writing on the front of the lens is important to see which one it is and determine its worth.

Jonathan, that forum has actually improved dramatically in my opinion over the last few years. Probably as a result of being better moderated or having lost so many members since the big turmoil there and PentaxForums formed, people actually know each other better again now, kind of like they did there in the pre-k10d days, so it's also friendlier.
There were only a handful of us *istD/*istDS users in the world back then, and most of us who were inclined to even use a forum like it were on DPReview (and/or PDML before that.) So it feels a bit more like it used to now, but with only a few of the old familiar faces from back then.
Anyway I always liked their forum interface. You could scan vast amounts of threads/posts at a glance without so much scroling, and the forum wasn't divided up into a gazillion sub-forums like here, which I do not like so much. But yeah, people seem friendlier here, so maybe I should give this place another shot after my last attempt ended badly with people being jerks here but being freindly and positive on DPreview on the exact same topic/identical threads.

Anyway, I'd be interested to hear if it was just me and Zvonimir that got banned or everyone in that thread. If it's a large scale thing and they don't get rid of him as a moderator, I'll know what's up. I'm going to be so dismayed if they don't remove that guy's moderator privileges.

It's weird for me, Mike, I've never been banned from any forum before, ever. And I got banned for asking the mods (well, one in particular) to explain why he is deleting threads left and right. Of course instead of explaining, he just deleted all the threads about his bad behavior and banned the people calling him out. I've been banned for 7 days for "trolling" (fail to see how that is trolling) and will wait and see what happens. If that particular moderator is still there at the end of the 7 days, I don't think I'll feel very good about continuing to contribute there.

Hi,

I've been banned on DPR for daring to complain about all the disappearing threads on the Pentax DSLR forum there. Anyone else experience the same treatment over there? Zvonimir, are you here on Pentax Forums?

It would be ironic if I get banned here for the same. I'm going to take a wild guess and assume complaining about moderators on a completely different forum is not against the rules here as well.

A strange community at the moment, that one.

This kind of tone is exactly why I stopped contributing at DPR a few years ago and registered here. In the beginning, things were nice here, whereas the Pentax forum at DPR was a total mess with constant infighting among older members and a bunch of new people behaving on a level of jerkishness close to this particular thread.

But what I've experienced here in this thread is just totally rude and uncalled for, much like what was going on at DPR back then. I posted a similar thread on DPR with the same ideas as this thread. In stark contrast to the response here, my ideas have been taken seriously at DPR and a really cool and much more interesting discussion has involved with many insightful comments.

Is this place full of people like this, or is this an anomaly?

  1. Mirrorless cameras with newer mounts can already be made more compact (due to less back focus distance) than any DSLR mount.

But they don't accept all of my K-mount lenses!

  2. This design would be limited to an LCD-only design much like the K-01. With the sensor up in the prism area there's little room left for a viewfinder, whether EVF or OVF.

I know that's the drawback, but if they can market a clunker like the K-01 with even a slight amount of success, imagine how successful what a very svelt and improved K-mount body with good ergonomics would be.

    QuoteQuote:

  3. In a typical DSLR, a dirty mirror only affects the viewfinder image. With this new design mirror dirt would affect images. The mirror would have to be cleaned occasionally and cleaning scratches would accumulate over time, permanently decreasing image quality.

I don't see why the mirror would scratch when you clean it. And I've had my k10d for 6 years now and shot 10's of thousands of images with it, changing lenses all over the place, never cleaned the mirror once, it looks just like brand new. And in the worst case, replacing the mirror should be neither difficult nor expensive. It's not a moving part.

Gee, thanks for your contribution to the thread. Please read my original post, I merely asked "why Pentax don't do x."

It was an honest question, and if anyone has any technical insights as to why this is not possible (I am not stupid and would assume there are reasons it has not been done yet, no one having ever thought of it being the least likely of all) and is able to communicate with somewhat less sarcasm, I would enjoy a civilized conversation.

Hi,

Why don't pentax put the sensor up where the prism is on a dslr and fix the mirror at 45 degrees in place?

You could take up to 20 mm of thickness off the body with just this one move.

Good one!

I must say I too was very disappointed with the bokeh in these, but was entirely fooled. My thoughts were along the lines of "Way to go, Pentax. Once again you've taken a classic design and tweaked it for sharpness and contrast at the expense of bokeh! This is almost as bad as what they did to the FA 20 2.8" I thought the lack of critical sharpness likely had more to do with technique and processing than the lens, as is so often the case on these forums.

Knowing now what lens it really was, I'm very impressed with the color rendering. That alone really had me convinced this was a very modern lens. I'm sure you increased the contrast significantly in post processing, so that would explain that, correct?
