Petavoxel has a new entry in his great blog about Pentax and full frame. As always, he's thoughtful and opinionated.

Here's a small quote on costs. But read the whole thing.

I forgot he also addressed the debate back in March:

And in May:

It would be great to watch Falk and Petavoxel debate live!

Dealing with file dates/times

I like using Windows Live Photo Gallery to view my photos and pictures after I processed them from RAW and MJPEG format. The former with Bibble, the latter with Handbrake.

Bibble, as other processors must do, maintains the original file creation date of the photographs I take. Therefore, in the date view in Windows, things are located timewise when I took them, not when I processed them.

But the same isn't true for Handbrake. It creates video files that have file creation and modification dates set for when the video file was compressed. This means that date views are screwed up entirely.

Does anyone know of any ways to copy or set file creation dates according to the video source files?

Eye-Fi Home Video 4Gb works great on the K-x!

I think you mean this press release instead. But that specifically is about Optio point-n-shoot cameras, not DSLRs. I'd love an update to my firmware for better support, though!

I read all those, too. But it worked with zero hassle.

Eye-Fi Home Video 4Gb works great on the K-x!

I recently took advantage of Picasa's promotion that gives you a 4Gb Eye-Fi Home Video card, with geotagging and online video sharing, if you pay $50 for a year's worth of 200Gb online storage. Even $50 for this card alone is a great price.

The card worked in my Panasonic ZS3 point and shoot with no problem (well, it can only upload MJPEG and not AVCHD files). But how would it work on my new Pentax K-x? The Eye-fi official Pentax compatibility chart doesn't even list the K-x, and the K-7, K10D, and K20D are listed as incompatible. And another thread here talked only of the Pro card, and just for the K7. So I didn't have high hopes.

But, lo and behold, the card works absolutely perfectly, for both photos and videos. I have JPEG+RAW enabled, and the JPEG files are transfered. The video file transfered fine to my computer, and was uploaded to Youtube by itself. Plus both videos and photos are properly geotagged, to an incredible precision -- without a GPS chip!

Here's a sample video, in full 720p (not that the subject needs it). I edited out the location. This is the 360p version that Youtube embeds, you need to click on the video to see 720p on the YT site itself.

[YT]v=mD0P9-32Wxo[/YT]

I'll try to do some nicer videos later.

The card itself is no slouch. I thought it would be pretty slow inside my card reader. But I'm getting 18 Mb/s transfer rates with the internal card reader of my new HP desktop running Windows 7.

My only reservation is that I've had a RAW workflow for photos before this, so perhaps I'll keep the card in my Panasonic at this point, and eventually get the PRO version. I really like the geotagging stuff.

For videos, my workflow is to dump the MJPEG files into a "RAW" directory, then compress them with Handbrake to get them into a reasonable filesize for sharing and playing on my PS3. But what's nice here, is that I can share videos with my family immediately on Youtube or Facebook, without going through those stages.

Displaying DNG thumbnails in Windows XP

I'm using this codec pack to display thumbnails in Windows 7 x64, and it works fine for my Pentax K-x files. But if I want to view them after a double-click, the colors which look so nice in the thumbnail turn purple -- horrible!

I'm using 1.64, which enabled support for the K-x.

Handbrake Compression Settings?

FYI, here's an answer I got from a post on Handbrake's forums:

I can't think of any reason why the standard RF guidance wouldn't apply. To get reasonable bitrates MJPEG (which is really just an animated series of stills) is heavily compressed compared to a normal SLR photo. 12Mbps at 720p24 is 0.6 bits/pixel while typical DSLR JPEGs are closer to 2.5. Maybe even back off to RF 22; if you can't see the difference, enjoy the file size savings.

Ok, so I'll stay with files at 25% of their original size! :)

Handbrake Compression Settings?

I have the same version. I was somewhat askance at 'repairing' a file coming straight from the camera, so I didn't agree. Windows Media Player has no such problem. That's probably the first time WMP easily plays a file VLC doesn't!

Handbrake Compression Settings?

I'm going to be compressing video clips I'm taking with my K-x using the famous and now new Handbrake 0.9.4. I'll keep the original format for editing purposes, but quick sharing and viewing are nicer with compact H.264 files.

The compression works very well. A 52 second clip in MJPEG format takes 82Mb, while the same at the default quality level (constant quality, 60.78%) takes 19Mb. The picture quality looks really very nice.

I wonder if anybody else has played with the constant quality settings for K-x videos (or K-7 videos with 24fps) in Handbrake? I've tried increasing the setting to 65%, which results in a file size of 31Mb. But not sure about the increase in quality.

I'm finding it really difficult to A-B compare two video clips, by the way. For example, VLC doesn't play MJPEG, claiming the file is corrupt(?!). MP4 and M4V videos, produced by Handbrake, have no problems.

And how would I compare two clips side by side?

Quality levels on K-x?

I'm loving my new K-x and it's video mode. Tough to say goodbye to my K100D, but the new camera looks to be special...

I was wondering about the quality levels on the K-x. Check out this video that someone posted to Vimeo comparing the three quality levels both in stills and in motion:

Pentax K-x HD Quality Setting Comparison on Vimeo

There doesn't appear to be much difference in quality between them! The difference in size is tremendous, though.

What do you all think? Stick with 1 star primarily, or not?

Amazing cheap flash for K7

A beautiful shot! What was the unit mounted on if it wasn't on the camera?

What about my K100D? Will it work?

I'm just trying to understand the tradeoffs of using this one versus using a flash like the Sigma 530 Super ($220 on Amazon) or Pentax 360.

K-x video frame rate

Hmmm. But I can take an SD card from the K-x and play it on my PS3, which has 24P output, and if my Sony TV takes 24p in, then it should all work, right?

Video on less expensive bodies?

Wow! I just read about the new K-x. It's almost as if Pentax was reading my mind! :)

But, for some reason, HD video on the new cameria is encoded in MJPEG. The 720p video filesizes are going to be mindboggling.

Well, my HD camcorder doesn't have: shake reduction, interchangeable lenses, or a large sensor. What it does have is compactness. Which is nice, but I'm interested in an SLR body that gives me those other advantages, too!

Hello,

I'm very happy with my K100D, my very first SLR. I'm still learning photography and feel that there's much more to know and grow. 6Mpixel is plenty for me.

But I have to say I'm very entranced by the video mode on the K7. Is there any informed speculation about whether Pentax plans to bring a video mode to their less expensive body line? Perhaps the successor the K-m?

I ask because, while I have a great time with my Sanyo HD camcorder, the light sensitivity and lens on it are nothing compared to my SLR.

Thanks!

I used to use Photoshop Elements for editing, but since I got my Pentax K100D and started shooting raw, I turned to Bibble which has some very nice RAW processing capabilities for a relatively low price.
