Fried K-M?

Will this setup result in a fried K-m?

I need better lighting but I don't want to fork up for a hotlight, radio trigger, or new flash just yet. This is how I did off-camera flash on my Ricoh KR5-SuperII(plastic K2000 knockoff) for dark concerts.

I'm not very electrically inclined, although I understand basics. Someone mentioned on here about using a safe PC cable or safe hotshoe adapter. Was hoping I already had a safe setup without knowing it.

Appreciate all feedback!!!!

Focusing screen for K-m

I was just turned onto focusingscreen.com and was relieved to see models that were significantly cheaper than the Katzeye screen I've been looking at. Does anyone have any experience with this site or the cheaper screens (FSB, FSX)? I need a focusing screen ASAP and I didn't know if there's really that much tech that goes into a screen or the Katzeye ones are just over priced.

Input is appreciated!

Flashes on my K-m
Posted By Sasquatch

Now that I have a dslr and can experiment to my heart's content without breaking the bank on film processing, I'm going to start playing more with DIY studio/lighting. The only flash gear I currently own is 2 old school cheapo flashes, a male-male pc cord, and both adapters for both ends. I had great results using this setup as a handheld light source for concerts and quick portraits. The two flashes are:

-Alfon 540 Thyristor/Bounce
-Sunpak auto 821 dedicated

I know that the K-m does not do TTL metering, but I'm a little confused on what that actually means for me. Are these flashes worth anything to me at all? Are they safe to trigger via my PC cord? If I were to pick up a cheap set of radio triggers, would they do anything for me then?

Thanks!

Old lenses on K-x

I believe this is the first lens modding post I've ever seen on PF. Props!

I'm sure you already did this, but I would double check that any rough edges that may exist on the lens are properly filed and polished down. Wouldn't want to scratch up that K-x!!

Enter the true focal length of the lens. If the lens is 50mm, enter that.

I just started fooling around with my K-m and my old lenses today as well. Use this very helpful blog if you get stuck anywhere:

K2000 w/ 2 lens kit or KX

The K2000 doesn't get a lot of love on this forum. I'd be really surprised if anyone told you to purchase a K2000/K-m over a K-x.

I just unboxed my first DSLR, a K2000 last night. I haven't had an opportunity to put it through its paces yet, but I plan to post my thoughts in the near future.

I would probably have gotten a K-x if I had the money, but only because it has the reputation of a cooler, better camera (and because of the color choices). I highly doubt that I personally would have used any of the features of the K-x that aren't available on the K-m (except for the HD video).

Good luck with your decision. I don't envy you!

No I don't believe I posted in the thread at all. The thread was quite old when I found it, so I just PMed the OP instead.

Thanks for the help and advice, although I still cannot find the thread. If you could do a quick search when you get a chance, just to make sure I'm not crazy, that would be great. No rush.

Thanks for the quick response and helpful tips. I tried both methods you described and still did not find anything.

Is it possible that thread could have been deleted by the OP and is gone without a trace?

This is making me feel a bit suspicious :(

Where do Marketplace threads go if the items are not sold? In the marketplace, there are only 7 pages of threads. Also, if someone lists something in the marketplace and it is not sold, and can no longer be found in the marketplace, does the thread still show up on the users profile as a thread that they started?

The reason I ask is because I just purchased some equipment from a very old thread in the marketplace, but I have not received the goods yet (only been a couple days so no worries yet). I wanted to go back and look at the original thread but I cannot find it in the marketplace, in the marketplace archives, or listed under the the threads started by that user.

What's up?

$350 budget, use old lenses, what should I get?

My flashes are:

-Alfon 540 Thyristor/Bounce
-Sunpak auto 821 dedicated

I use the Alfon regularly and hardly ever use the sunpak because it lacks the swivel/directional feature.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate all of the advice!!!!

I decided to go with the KM. I can still use my cheap old flashes and lenses on my 35mm bodies if I need to. I really want the SR and the newer gear.

So excited to receive it!!!

$172?!?! AAAAHHH!!!!!

I'm totally torn between a *ist and a K2000 now! I was moments away from buying a K2000 and I keep going back and forth!

I want the newness and the technology of the K2000, but I'm so used to old school flash and lens techniques!!

The *istDS uses SD? I thought they used CF...

Thanks for the information, Lowell.

Some clarification:

How would a K2000 perform with old-school lenses that are still "A"? For instance, how well would an SMC A 50mm F1.7 or my 135 A f2.8 perform on a K2000 with flash?

Also, I used to shoot a lot of really dark concerts, assuming I wanted to do so again (in digital this time) what would be the most economical way to achieve this with a K2000 and the kit lens or a modern lens? Is there such thing as a "cheap" modern flash that would be good for this?

I realize they will all mount up and shoot fine, I was just wondering more about their compatibility with flashes and metering and whatnot.

The lenses I have are nothing special. I have a Hanimex A 135mm f2.8 and a third party (can't remember the brand right now) 28mm A in awesome shape. The two flashes I use suit me well but both cost ~$5 from the local used camera shop. I also have a cheapa$$ ebay x.42 adapter that I use to get crazy fisheye shots. Although I love my gear, it's all cheap and I'm sure most people would probably think that it's garbage.

I had an SMC 50mm A F1.7 on loan from an uncle, and I'm definitely going to pick up another one to use on my new DSLR purchase. Will I run into any problems using any of the "classic" SMC-Pentax or Super Takumar lenses on a K2000?

I'm about to scoop up an awesome deal on a K2000 with kit lens, batteries, and SDHC card all brand new.

Thoughts?

I'm finally going to make the jump to a DSLR!!!

Right now I have $350 to put towards a body/kit. I already have a couple of old manual lenses, and I'm shopping for a few more but they aren't going to count against the $350. I also have a couple old super cheap flashes that have treated me well on my film bodies.

What camera should I get?

Right now I'm leaning heavily towards an *ist since they have the better support for my old lenses and flashes. The smaller mega-pixel capability worries me a bit. 90% of what I shoot would never be printed or if it was not larger than say 11"x14". However, I have had a family friend ask if I would be interested in shooting their wedding, so I would like to give them larger printing options if I decided to do it.

However, I've also seen a couple good deals on a K2000. Shake reduction and higher MP count has me considering it.

The KX also obviously really has me interested. I could definitely wait and save a little more for one, but I've been waiting for a long time and I'm super antsy to get something! The ability to shoot HD video sounds pretty cool as well...

I mainly shoot portraits of friends/family, cars, some architectural/structural stuff, and of course anything interesting I see.

Any and all input is appreciated!
